I don't think there is a more universally liked footballer than Peter Crouch.
I once bumped into him at the Belfry Hotel in Sutton Coldfield in 2001/2. He was still a teenager and had just signed for Aston Villa and I was attending a conference through my work. Villa were obviously housing him to at the hotel.
We shared the stairs to our rooms and he seemed surprised that I recognised him when I asked him how he was settling in at the Villa. Looking back, and now having kids older than Crouch was then, it must have been difficult being that age and on your own in a "posh hotel". Perhaps I should have checked all was well
He is a credit to his profession and to his family.

Crouch is the only target man I've rated in the last 20+ years. The rest were good for lower league sides, but not much good for trophy chasers. Guess Ibra's come in so I have to rate him a bit.
Shearer(in his Newcatle days), Kane, Drogba, Kanu, Llorente, Adebayor, Lukaku, Kevin Davies, are/were all better target men than Crouch and that's just the Premier League..
You can add Batistuta, Lewandowski, Mandzukic, Mario Gomez, Klose for a more global answer... They're just the few I can think off the top of my head
