  • People give away their time for money, and yet they will never get that time back. If we are to survive and create a better life, our time might be put to a better purpose.

My dad could've retired at 55 but he waited until 65. He and my mum were going to travel the World. My mum died 2 months after my dad retired. I learned from this and followed my dream. For the last 20+ years we've lived a self-sufficient life in a beautiful rural location. We don't have much cash and we hardly ever go anywhere. We could do with a sit-down more often but we live a life dictated by the seasons and punctuated by the weather. Bliss! My advice? DON'T WAIT!

I once worked part-time for a small, busy museum. Often, the ‘front of house’ staff would be there well after closing time because of late visitors being let in by management; we did not get paid for this extra time. One morning I arrived a few minutes late to be greeted by the director. He said, “your late, this is the second time this month” I replied “I spend hourly increments of my life working here for not a lot of money, you should be waiting on bended knee with a cup of tea and a biscuit saying thank you for coming in today.” He was stunned and never mentioned lateness again.

I used to commute to London. Minimum 2 hours each way. And always running. Running for the train. Running for the tube. Running for the bus. Exhausting. I gave it all up for a lower paid job in my own village. 10 mins walk, door to door. I could even go home for lunch. I had time for evening socialising or swimming or just sitting in my garden. It was so much better. By the time I’d deducted the annual train ticket, the annual car parking etc, it wasn’t too much of a drop in salary.

That is why I stayed on the farm here in the states, Looked for a job and did the math and I would be farming my kids out to a stranger, and they wanted me to start work an hour before I could even drop them off at the sitters mind you, so I would have done all that for about 30 $$ more a week than I already had without leaving home. LOL. I raised veggies and went to market, with the kids in tow, and mowed lawns when they were in Kindergarten, and had more money and spent more time at home w/ the kids too.

Philip Pullman did a piece on the BBC Jeremy Vine show about 6 years ago, that I think may have been deleted from archives, where he nailed the human condition. Greed, selfishness and a desire to outdo every other by whatever means. Humans are not a very nice species because we are egotistical, warlike and quite emotionally and mentally feeble. Those weren't his exact words as I can't get to hear the broadcast, maybe I'm just not technologically advanced enough to find it. However, i remember Jeremy Vine talking about it and being quite disparaging and dismissive of the essay. Sadly I have agree with Mr Pullman.

I want to share an experience with you all, it happened to ME yesterday.
I was driving out of a local car park, and a family with a 3 year old or so child, on small toddler bike, were walking slowly in the sunshine.
The toddler was milling back and forth, and didnt realise the car park exit.
    I stopped and waited.
The family were trying to tell the tiny boy, he was obstructing the car park in their own way ...eastern european accent.
I told the family not to stress, i will wait until its safe to drive, dont stress.
They managed to sort the situation and we all smiled.
One of the younge men approached my car and gave me a beautiful pink rose from a bunch he was carrying.
    He said
" this is for you, thank you"
It made my day, week, month and year.
Just a simple act by both parties ...brought joy.
THIS is what life and humanity is about everyone.

I’ve been applying for full time jobs with commuting involved, and my mate made me think do I really need the stress and lack of life at my age. His theory is that the last 5 or 10 years of your working life probably take 10 or 15 years off your lifespan. I reckon I can survive on part time work. Have applied for a supermarket delivery driver job, afternoon/evenings. I think I will be far more content doing that. Will have most of the day to myself, for exercise, photography etc. Result.

I also lived on an island, serviced at the time by one single bridge (I am in the UK). In my opinion a better life for me, would be one where there are as few people in it as possible, and to generally be left alone. I've never been a "People person", and never will be. Apart from that, a "Job" that does not involve the public, or people per say, but one that is joyful and satisfying to do, and one where I can take a break when I feel I need one, instead of having my breaks dictated to me. I have tried all my adult days to have a life like that, but it's never worked out that way, despite my best efforts. Being retired now, I'm pleased to say I have an extremely peaceful, quiet life, which I enjoy immensley.

Great job but eventually the hours ruined my health in a serious way. I did it for five years too long. I wouldn't advise anyone to do it. It's not worth it. I retired last year and I am 50. There is nothing wrong earning currency in order to buy material things that lead towards enjoyment. The key is to find a hobby that you enjoy and get paid to do it. Then you wont have to work ever again. The problem is, some people havnt got the basics right because they've never been taught it - basics such as looking after yourself through fitness, sports, learning how to eat a balanced diet and perhaps even grow a small amount of vegetables free from poisons and stay away from all the processed crap and sugar, learn how to manage your finances, get those right and the world is your oyster, or at least, you can live in a small community without feeling the stress and pressure of big business.

Up until March I commuted for 45 minutes one way a day. This varied due to a number of things and could at times be an hour and the best time was just over half an hour. The thing that stopped me was over six months of rain and dark mornings and late afternoons. I liked the job but driving up onto Dartmoor each day, where when its dark and raining and you can’t tell where the road is as moor and sky blend into darkness it became too stressful.

In 1967 I left school, started an apprenticeship as an apprentice chef, two shifts a day, morning and evening. I had to cycle to and from work on an old bike I paid £1-10s for. I had to do four 12 mile journeys (Maidenhead to Wokingham) that took about half an hour each way. Through All weathers, and over a pretty terrible snow period 67/68 - The chain would come off every couple of miles and the pedal shaft was knackered - It'd be Clunk-CLONK! all the way - The good old days EH?? - All for £4- pw for 78 hours - It was the price I paid in Time & Energy - and would do again (If I was fit enough) 🤠

This is so true, trading one's time for money is never a good deal, and it would be bad enough if that's all it entailed, but there's more, as Jiminy Cricket would say. The work people do very often doesn't just rob them of their time it makes them ill into the bargain, for a myriad of different reasons, and that's what it's designed to do, in my opinion!
It's all engineered so the working person sees as little of his/her state pension as possible, if any, at all, and I knew so many people who tragically expired before reaching pension age or just a little after, fook work has always been my maxim, I make no apologies for saying this.

The sad thing is most of the working poor dont have any other option to pay for the roof over their heads and put food on the table. The alternative would be more trouble than its worth being unemployed. There are some who can beat the system and have no problem living off the rest of us but the decent majority are basically wage slaves. By the way growing up in post war 1950s was no picnic for those who lived in the bombed out slums of the big cities. Hot and cold running cockroaches with an outside bog in the winter. You do raise some very good points Richard. I think people have become far too materialistic. I do, however, find that the idea of stepping back to past times and being able to find happiness is a little on the optimistic side. When first coming abroad, moving to "the sticks" was an real eye opener. Meeting folk that don't have a lounge even to this day. They keep animals, they tend the land, they are up with the sparrows, they work all day, come in, have dinner and go to bed early. It's a really hard life. Not so many of them now admittedly. It's a question I think of trying to find somewhere inbetween. I admit, I do like certain nice things, although I've become much less materialistic as I have become older and good health becomes more difficult to attain. I do find living a little way out from the towns and cities in the country is a Godsend. I think if I were crammed in southern uk where I was last living , I'm sure I would have gone mad to see what has become of that once lovely country. Always love listening, keep up the great vids ❤️
