    Your attitude is the attitude the rest of the fandom needs to have, but apparently there's people taking legitimate offense to this episode. They can't take even the lightest jab at them. If you ever needed an example of snowflakes...

    I had such a great time with this episode. If Slice of Life was meant to be a celebration of the fandom, then this is a comical takedown of some of its more critical viewers, and even had a jab at fake fans, with the ponies that didn't read the book but wanted autographs anyway for collector's value.
    9:51 I never wanted to hug Rarity so bad until this moment. It was awesome that Starlight (probably) slapped the dissenters around.
    15:23 as an Applejack fan, this struck a chord with me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't have the mindset of those fans, but I felt so awful for her, even if I did laugh at the "AND KICK OUT MAH OWN FAMILY?!" line.
    19:49 This song was incredible. It made me tear up a little. Of course it ended up getting sandbagged by the ponies LOL.
    All in all, a great episode. It took such a big risk, and I can't help but love it.

      AJ is my favourite, but as for fixing her problem, the solution is simple: If they're _really_ family, then they have to work on the farm ...... Some might stay anyway, but i'm sure all freeloaders would vanish within a minute from them realizing it's serious. ^_^

      I'm kinda disappointed that they didn't include my group in the annoying brony mob, the ones who are noting the blatant misuse of Royal Titles in Equestria.
      Given that Equestria seems to be a loosely bonded Commonwealth, Celestia is either Queen if it's British style or an Empress if it's a magical HRE.
      Luna would still be a Princess
      Twilight seems to be a citizen of the "core" nation state and does not have sovereign territory, therefore she's a pretender duchess at most.
      Cadence is definitely neither an Empress or a Princess, likely a Grand Duchess, same goes for "King" Sombra
      Ember is a Doge, the Dragons do not have a monarchy, but a monastic order.
      And finally, you wouldn't address any of them by their title. There pronouns would be HRH (Her Royal Highness) or HSH (Her Serene Highness).

      If I shipped anyone, it would probably be Starlight and Rarity.
      Headcanon - It's not coincidence that Starlight's mane looks similar to Raritys :) :)
      This episode is really showing how close she has gotten to the Mane 6. No matter what the haters may say, Starlight is a really enjoyable character. She had brought so much to the show. And for those who complain about the mistakes she made in her episodes, it is not like the Mane 6 are innocent of pulling a lot of questionable actions in the first three seasons. Multiple times. Starlight at least has the excuse of being fairly new to true friendship.

    • @booklover4330
      @booklover4330 7 років тому +11

      Only thing I wish is that we got to see the choice words to the Rarity Bashers, that would have been amazing to see. (Someone animate that).

    • @titanhades4331
      @titanhades4331 7 років тому +10

      And it is obvious Starlight is learning. She is trying not to rely on magic to solve problems. This episode shows that when she brings in the two fillies.
      Even in a Royal Problem, she clearly used her magic as a last resort. She tried talking them down and putting herself between them. At the end it was understandable the route she took. History shows what could very well happen if she didn't do something. And seeing as there are no longer any elements of Harmony to use, and the rainbow power was a one time deal, they would be screwed if either went evil. But there was not much else she could do considering it's Celestia and Luna, who refused to listen to her.
      Compare this to season 6, where she usually jumped right in with magic.

    • @titanhades4331
      @titanhades4331 7 років тому +13

      That is another reason I love Starlight. Unlike the Mane 6, I actually could see her using some 'choice words' when talking to someone who deserves it. I think they needed someone who could fill this role. This is probably very good for Twilight, in retrospective. Clearly, even if Starlight is no longer her student, she nows fulfills a confidant role for Twilight. She could do things for Twilight that she can't do because she is a princess. Stuff Spike can't do.
      Or maybe I am thinking too much into it.
      Or maybe it's could be more true than I think. Celestia, Luna, and, Cadence very obviously have castle staff and guards. Maybe Starlight is kind of an advisor/confidant to Twilight now. In this episode she is constantly by Twilight's side, giving advice and being an ear for her problems. The other Mane 6 are too busy with their own lives to do this. And to put the icing on the cake, she helped put Twilight's mind at ease at the end of this episode. Clearly Starlight is what Twilight needed.

    • @titanhades4331
      @titanhades4331 7 років тому +11

      God, it makes even more sense. Starswirl was advisor to Celestia long ago, right? If Twilight is viewed as Celestia's successor, it would make so much sense for Starlight to be her advisor. Think of it. Starswirl. Starlight.
      Most powerful magic user as advisor to alicorn princess. It might be a coincidence, but I hope not.

    • @proclarushtaonasat
      @proclarushtaonasat 7 років тому +2

      my guess is 2 too. The first 3 seasons took place over the course of 1 year, judging by celestias comments in s4e1, so the show doesnt take place in real time. but we can meassure time by the number of hearts warming eves they had, hearts warming tail from season 6 takes place 2 years after the hearts warming eve play from season 2.

    • @SciRei7H3dEG3NeR4T3
      @SciRei7H3dEG3NeR4T3 7 років тому +3

      proclarushtaonasat well... S5 episode "Tanks for the Memories" and "Hearthbreakers" are both winter episodes, but they're separated by 15 episodes apart.
      I'd say the episodes are actually randomized in the timeline. So with that evidence it's hard to say that each season of the show is a year in the MLP world.

    • @proclarushtaonasat
      @proclarushtaonasat 7 років тому +2

      SciRei Fireshock yup, in season 1, we had winter wrap up and fall weather friends two episodes apart, which doesnt make sense, unless they skipped a whole year in only two episode, which also doesnt make sense, since they were invited to the grand galloping gala, and i doubt, celestia would send them tickets, not for the gala this year, but the one after that.
      So i think, twilight moved to ponyville in summer, joined the running of the leaves, helped luna during nightmare night, put on HWE-play in canterlot, became WWU-organizer in spring, then turned into an alicorn right before her one-year ponyville-annversary.

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 7 років тому +2

      My personal headcannon is that the Friendship is Magic show is actually following the 3 different timelines shown in "Its About Time" [S2E20] at once.
      Then those episodes that do not fit the ammount of expected winters happen in one but not in all of them.
      . Each of the 3 different Twilights belong to a different parallel universe, as Starswirl´s spell can not actually re-write the past of the time-traveler but rather the past of another pony (to avoid from creating a paradox like killing themselves in the past before traveling to kill themselves).
      -> Neither Starlight´s modification could bypass this limitation: each one of those "bad futures" were the real consequences from medling on a point in the past of an alternate timeline [her intention was to force Twilight and Spike to live in one of them without a way to escape back to their original reality].

      @Angela.Perkins 7 років тому +20

  • @Necrikus
    @Necrikus 7 років тому +12

    So here's what I like about this episode; the point wasn't to make fun of the fandom, even if it superficially seemed like it was. The point was two-fold: that even if something you do has unintended, negative, consequences, you should not overlook those positively impacted by it; and that you should not forget that the people behind the works or anything you enjoy (or don't enjoy) are still people who are imperfect, have feelings, and have lives outside of whatever thing you associate with them.
    Obviously, there are jokes about the fandom, but the fandom isn't the joke because there are people within it that do enjoy the show and have been positively impacted by it, instead it is those who take things in the wrong way and end up treating other people poorly because of that who are being made fun of. And they deserve that.
    It's a great episode, partially because it is a microcosm of the relationship between the fans of the show, and the show's creators; and partly because it is actually funny and well written. It shows that even if there are those who take their work and messages the wrong way and act like jerks because of it; they still show that everything done is still worth it so long as there are those who do legitimately enjoy their work and have helped them in some way.
    I also like it because they managed to make Starlight part of an episode that wasn't about her at all, without relegating her to just one or two minor scenes. The conflict only involved her by her association with the Mane 6, but otherwise, she was not directly affected. Twilight was the one who carried the episode further, being the one who started the conflict with her own agency, directly investigated and tried to help her friends when she saw they were in trouble, and planted the seeds for the resolution. While one might say that Starlight solved the problem (at least for the Mane 6), it was Twilight who even made it possible, by helping those two fillies twice, the second time personally giving them a copy of the journal. Starlight may have presented the solution, but without Twilight's own past decisions, Starlight couldn't have done that. Plus, on numerous times, Starlight chose to stay behind to help someone else so that Twilight could continue to move the episode further. So Starlight got to stick around and be helpful while the episode wasn't even about her, which really helps in making her feel more like a part of the clique.
    It is a bit of a shame this had to be done at the expense of poor Spike, who basically got his side-kick position stolen to keep Starlight around, but hey, I like Starlight more than Spike so I can't complain too much.

    The meta ness of this episode was off of the charts and it was absolutely amazing! From Applejack being popular, to Rarity being disliked (I knew you'd have some choice words for that, and I was right). To the meta ness of Fluttershy learning a similar lesson over and over. He was really pushing it with the fandom, and it was just pure awesomeness. I loved it so much, and really this episode really does show how much they've all changed, while not a lot they've still changed, and it's great to see in this episode being let out and explored. I learned this when it came to Saddle Row Review. They often times pitch ideas for the show and intend to make them, but they never get around to animating it. It's very common. It's usually why Starlight wasn't mentioned in some episodes free she was reformed. And neither was Discord when he was too. It's just a habit that the MLP staff have.

    I find it really neat that this episode aired during bronycon, The biggest brony convention.
    So far I've seen tons of hate on this episode because people think it was them hating on the fandom, it was more of a joke, and them telling us we shouldn't over react to every little thing. I for one loved this episode, and really like how they did this episode, referencing almost every type of this fandom The only thing we needed was some reference to shippers.
    So far season 7 has been amazing, looking forward for what yet to come.

I also like that they made her a filly. I don't know, it's just overall, really good. Starlight defended Rarity a lot in this episode. Though she also defended Fluttershy so I'm not looking into it (Starity?) buuuut... did anyone else really wanna see at least a BIT of Starlight laying the smackdown on those 2 ponies? Or the one who was going after Fluttershy? Or anyone? Just me? LOL...I have issues.
    I just like Starlight and I like how she threw her magical prowess and confidence around in this episode as a way of defending her friends. She's a lot more aggressive than the mane 6, sans maybe Rainbow but Rainbow's more competitive than outright aggressive. Hehe. Oh well, awesome episode. lol i must have issues too because i want to see Starlight do it too...it'll been amazing! That would've made her become my #1 favorite pony (right now she's ranked #3 with the two above her being Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie) And given how Twilight gave her a nod right before she went to gave that "chat", it almost felt like she'd been ok with it if Starlight wanted to release any remaining evil she still had, but just kept suppressed, on those 2 ponies that made Rarity cry. The ONE time i wanted to see Starlight tap into any evil left in her with her magic...she either decided to be miss nice pony and not use it, or it'll been too bad for the kids to see so they couldn't show it to us lol

    Blank Check said it best - "Where Slice of Life was a loving embrace; a wink and nod to the fandom, this one is a friendly jab to the side."
    Yes, they're making fun of us a bit, but not in a hurtful way. It's like a family member poking fun at your shortcomings knowing that you won't get angry and instead will get a laugh out of it. I enjoyed it very much. As an Applejack fan, I loved the "I'm popular" line from her.
    People who can't see that and actually took offense to this episode should really take a step back and re-evaluate themselves and how they see the world.

    Quick confession: For a little time, i was with those Rarity critics TO AN EXTENT. Don't get mad at me for this, because i saw my failure long ago already. I never wanted her off the show or anything, but i basically almost entirely didn't care for her until Rarity Takes Manehattan. Then i began liking her more. Then, i seriously took a liking and respect for her after Canterlot Boutique and Rarity Investigates!
    RarityDash, if you're reading this, i'm sorry i ever was like that. As i said, this was only until 2014. Before Season 4, i had seen the whole show in about 4 or so days. I like her a lot these days. Only on the bottom of my favourite Mane six list because someone has to be last, not because i don't like her, like BronyBurningAxe always says about that.
    It took a lot of courage to say this, but i felt like it now because this is the perfect episode to say it. I, myself, didn't at all expect that reaction to her in this either

      Same thing with me. I can't say that I hated Rarity, but I didn't really like her either until Rarity Takes Manehattan as well. And tbh, it became my favorite Rarity episode. I've started to like her after that episode.
      Overall, I really enjoy this episode because of what the ponies are saying and how it parallels to what most, if not some, of what the fandom argue and say about the show as a whole, and the people who don't like it are either one of the townsponies or they just don't get the humor. The song for this episode is by far my favorite of the season, if not my top 5 of the show. I also like the realistic response after that, showing that they didn't change their mind right away.
      Also, Rarity's crazy face killed me. XD

    • @booklover4330
      @booklover4330 7 років тому +9

      I was the same way, at least until the end of season one where I started to respect her more and season 2 was where I made her my third favorite character. My harsh way of thinking was more towards Fluttershy, I thought she was cute but not much else, but I've realized that she really has changed, a lot more. Especially a few months ago when a new reactor started watching the series and I re watched it with him and I realized how far Fluttershy has come as a character (haven't watched the older episodes in a while before then), plus some reviewers who loved Fluttershy brought up some really good points about her character, and now I love her a lot more now then I did in the past. Everyone has their own opinion on a character, whatever character that may be. Something great about this series is that the characters do change, and you can end up liking ones you didn't in the past; which is great.

    I may not be as a strong or as serious of a brony as the many out there but I'm willing to say that I enjoy the characters as they are and I will continue to time and time again. I enjoy watching and seeing the characters go through their adventures exploring their faults, their strengths, meeting new faces to help enhance them and etc. I like Twilight with wings and it doesn't matter to me how others think that her wings are a pointless addition. The characters are memorable and priceless and I have nothing to judge them of but the episodes are a different story at least for some not all of them.

    I agree with you that those ponies who were mean to Rarity are worst ponies. Nobody hurts Rarity's feelings and gets away with it. Anyways on a serious note I'm with you that this is easily in the top 5 of the season. Not only does it poke fun at fandoms in general but it also provide a challenge for the main 6. Everyone of the main 6 were being challenged with their biggest strengths and weaknesses. Dash's ego was being used against her, Pinkie's love for making people laugh was being used against her, Applejack's love for family was used against her, and Fluttershy's assertiveness progress was being used against her, and Twilight's need to spread friendship completely backfired her. Honestly though I was more invested with Rarity's struggle. Mainly because the ponies saying she wasn't needed were portraying it as if Rarity was just a self conceited, materialistic, dramatic bitch that doesn't care about anything that isn't herself and fashion. It's interesting because it's the generic character that everyone seems to think Rarity would follow. This whole episode was just calling out those kinds of people in the fandom that believe the ponies only have one character trait

    Personally, I never thought anything was wrong with Rarity. The only "wrong" thing about her is that she's a snob, but that's her main character flaw. Each of the Mane six has a main flaw, and being stuck up is just hers.
    Rainbow Dash: Egotistical (her parents raised her to love herself)
    Rarity: Stuck up
    Applejack: Prideful (Her family and her job deserve the highest respect!)
    Fluttershy: Doormat (Being shy isn't a flaw)
    Pinkie Pie: Not very serious (But she can be serious)
    Twilight: Neorotic
    Each of these flaws are REAL so I don't understand why the fandom bashes the characters for having them...
    Each pony is best pony, because they all have learned about friendship and that's what the show's all about.

    4:00 Maybe Twilight used the cheapest paper she could find for the book?
    7:45 On their hooves.
    12:22 Yea, if they actually released that book unedited, ponies now know all about Daring Do / AK Yearling, questionable behaviour of the Wonderbolts and Surly Pogostick, misadventures of the princesses, Discord and Tirek; and so on.
    Next episode will be about the Mane Six getting into legal trouble for disclosing all this stuff.
    13:00 Meta, isn't it?
    16:00 Who would have thought that sharing your personal diary with all the world would be a bad a idea?
    I found the episode a bit too meta in places though. Not that I disagree much with Larson here, but I'd have preferred if it was a bit more subtle. Still, can't wait for the tons of salt the fandom will produce over this.

    I've always been on flutters side telling Fluttershy to not be shy is like telling Rainbow to not be so cocky or Pinkie to be more serious. I understand why folks think it's not interesting. However, as a shy person who has anxiety attacks over making important phone calls or returning something to the store, it's not something that can be changed by one or two steps. And regressions happen often. I'm glad the show pointed this out.

    2. It has been multiple years since at least season 4. Multiple references to this being likely are in the show itself somewhere.

    19:49 yeah. About frikin time Twilight used the Royal Canterlot Voice. She's been an Alicorn for 4 bloody seasons already and it's only NOW we see that, yes as an Alicorn she does have the RCV (I don't count what happened in the Hoofeilds and the McColts because she used magic on her throat that time).

    I love this episode personally, really love Larson's jab and I love your reaction to those two awful ponies saying those things about Rarity. You really love her don't you? 😄😄😄

    Fluttershy is literally me 80% of the time...I agree that repetition is bad though in writing.

      I feel like I'm sort of a combination of Fluttershy and Twilight. For some reason I didn't find the Fluttershy episodes necessarily repetitive. It felt like they were tackling different aspects of social anxiety. I could relate to her pretty well, and it's actually sort of inspiring for me to see a similar personality to mine overcome some of those subtly different fears in different ways without completely abandoning who she is.

    I never really liked the cricticism that Fluttershy episodes were repetitive, because while the basic is always "fluttershy learns assertiveness", they apply to different parts of her character. In one episode she learns to say no to something that affects her negatively, in another episode she learns to say no to help somebody (even if her action might hurt them in the short term), one episode is about her enjoying something outside of her comfort zone, another is about her learning that sometimes it is ok to stay in the comfort zone if you just can't bring yourself to enjoy being outside of it.
    It was an incredibly slow process, but it took a character that was defined by a cripling shyness and fear, and attacking all the angles that caused her to retreat into her shell until she could come out on her own. Through all the seasons if you analize the character you can see that the lessons do take each time, but are not enough for her to overcome her issues.
    And yes, not all of the epidoes have the best writing. It's actually a recurring problem for the character that the writers just don't know how to use her, and it's gotten to the point where she at times feels like a background character, and she gets the least amount of focus episodes by a cosiderable margin. Which is something that really bums me out, because seven seasons in she is still my favourite Mane 6.
    And to show that she just can't catch a break, a lot of people have expressed that Season 7 Fluttershy has changed way too much and is no longer the same character sweet character she was introduced as.

      Dude you literally just took a step backwards on your words. At first you say how Fluttershy has been executed pretty well given her steady but realistic process in development and how over the seasons she been noticeably improving, then you say that the writers don't know what to do with her character? Beside the fact that I disagree with that notion, your statement here feels kind of messy...

    The best thing about the episode is that the fillies are the only ones to learn the friendship lessons in the book while the adult ponies focus on the characters flaws. It's so meta it hurts.

    19:36 after the last episode, it could be possible that it said "Pear" and not "Pie" since it WAS smudged. OH SNAP!!! THATS WHY!!! HAHAHA! IT MAKES SENSE!!! Someone tried to remove the fact that they had a relationship with a Pear since they hated eachother!!! HAHAHAA!!! You have to admit, it makes sense!
