I liked the episode, it really put Rarity in a spot she usually isn't, and a place the show usually doesn't go; that traditional beauty isn't everything, that not everything can be solved by magic rainbows, and that you can make the best of a bad situation by having confidence in yourself. That *sounds* like something the show would include more, but it's never really happened to Rarity...she's always been picture-perfect, and the only times she ever wasn't "beautiful" was either a gag or it wasn't a big part of the story.

It's kind of a ovious concept like Discord learning that you should not change yourself to be just like your friends and Applejack learing the dangers of honestly. You would think those lessons would have been done before but they all worked great now when they were done.
Personally, i'm in an odd position here: I'm usually the one to go around explaining how an episode is NOT contrived at all, how reactions and actions and situations can be explained rationally, but here ..... i find faults. (I used to only dislike "Spike at your service", for Spike being out-of-character, but that was until someone suggested that Spike may simply be far more connected to Twilight than one assumed.) So the problem i find here has been pointed out by at least both Dr Wolf and RarityDash thus far: The Boastbuter Moustaches. Sure, RarityDash did not mention them specifically, but there was the "surely Twi and Starlight would have known some way", and in Boastbusters, Twilight DID create hair(moustaches) from nothing! And she repeated it once in Magic Duel. This is inconsistency for the sake of plot, but then again, several things from earlier seasons has become ..... slowly defined in ways that in extension do not work with how it was first done, and one of the more aggravating things are "you can't make something from nothing, even with magic" that is mentioned here. There is the idea that Zecora's potions are semi-magical, and that using more magic on it would risk interfere far worse .... BUT THAT WAS NEVER GIVEN AS AN EXPLANATION, or even hinted at! Hm.... I think i'm getting a headcanon on the matter. Some of the magic has disappeared from Equestria, affecting some of the rules of magic. .....Yup, i think that would work. Now, that is not due to a huge magic-eating monster .... but due to events that has happened in Equestria Girls. Yup. I think that headcanon fits.

I quite like this episode. Messing with the spooky eyes in the darkness, Granny Smith and Grand Pear working together, and Big Mac and Sugar Belle, just to name a few things.
At least "stabilized" the timeline fluctuations/discrepancies caused by the Twin Cakes never aging [by "moving back" and compressing a lot of other episodes like the BigMac/SugarBelle, Perfect Pear and THIS ONE into a non-linear sequence happening mostly on S5/S6]. A newborn is expected to sneeze and do other neurological spontaneous things on their first month of life [this episode happens 1 year after the end of that episode in season 2 were they were exactly 1 month old]. Also puts a hard "timeframe limitation" between a certain normal day on the life of UNICORN Twilight Sparkle and another day (about one year later) were the ALICORN Twilight had her student Starlight Glimmer helping her friend Rarity... -> This episode starts months after Twilight´s first Hearts Warming Eve with Spike in her castle ("Hearthbreakers" [S5E20]) and the S5 finale (because Starlight is her student); but ends still before the next one in "A Hearth's Warming Tail" [S6E08]; because Rarity had her mane normal again (and that was the first Hearts Warming Eve of Starlight with them).
My only real issue with the episode is that Spike should have shown more concerned with Rarity's well being. He really should have played a bigger part in helping console her.
James W The *entire* episode I was saying "talk to Spike and make a mohawk." _Well... one of those things happened..._ But seriously, if she did, she probably would have gotten the inspiration for the Mohawk sooner since it's basically Spike's spines design. Instead he's the silent janitor cleaning up around the plot.
Fluttershy certainly could've called up her little brother(Idk how to spell his name), he's pretty good at the whole wig making thing. Oh well, I loved this episode anyway.
I don't suppose Photo Finish would have let her do the shoot in a wig. Not unless she wanted to change the article to 'the most beautiful wigs in Equestria'. That said, I do like the simple conflict and upbeat 'it's all about confidence' resolution. Gives the episode the sort of tone of an episode from around about season 2.
Out of the entirety of the Mane 6, Rarity is the one that can't seem to ever have a bad episode. Also 6 weeks till the finale. I'm pretty sure we'll have a villain for the finale, so what are you banking on raritydash, an established villain, a reimagining of a g4 villain, or a new villain entirely? Lastly, Rarity isn't trying to make Lyra jealous. Starlight challenged Rarity to a waifu collecting competition and Rarity is trying to catch up. Starlight is in the lead by 2 with Trixie, Maud, Twilight, Ember, and Sunset while Rarity only has Rainbow Dash, Coco, and Sassy.
I chalk that up to Flurry Heart being a Alicorn, I imagine she acts more mature then other fillies her age. Same with being able to control her magic better, because she's an Alicorn. And Sunburst helping with her magic probably helps. But yeah the Cake twins need to age.
Yeah it's really weird. Normally the series is good with this stuff, I mean imagine the story potential if they aged the Cakes up? The Cake twins should technically be like a year or two older (maybe three years, at the most) then Flurry Heart and yet they still look around the same age.
From this episode we learn something interesting, magic is subject to the conservation of matter, you cannot create something from nothing and presumably cannot turn something into nothing, it all has to come and go from somewhere, a most interesting bit of information there.
Albeit this doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. That is Twilight said the reason to not make a mane purely out of magic is that it could have a disastrous result, not because it was impossible. We then see her and Starlight use the very magic Twilight warned Rarity about when Rarity said she was desperate enough, and we get that explosion of hair in the castle (I highly doubt they went and made a a few hundred ponies bald, plus the hair in the castle didn't look much like it was from manes, just random wild hair growth). Though perhaps with such a spell they are turning magic directly into matter, and its just unstable.
Hm, its possible that getting the exact amount of material is difficult, if their magic works on equivalent exchange they may have converted air into hair but controlling how much is transmuted may be extremely difficult hense why they ended up with so much , its also possible that hair is particularly hard to make because it is comprised of hundreds of strands rather than being a solid object like an orange or a teacup.
While the info on magic was interesting, one of course still wonders why they didn't explain why a wig wasn't an option, especially when we know wigs exist (Crankey wears one). An easy out would be to say its pretty much unknown for mares to go bald so all wigs are for male ponies and donkeys, but the "mare pattern baldness" joke makes that seem unlikely. Another option would be to have Rarity not be willing to go with hair that wasn't a part of her, but her being willing to use clouds makes that seem unlikely too. Still a good episode, the logical problems weren't enough to detract from it for me (unlike the Daring Do episode).
Hm....the only thing i can come up with is that rarity felt that using a store bought wig is like entering a store bought cake in a best cake design competition, all of the ones her friends made for her were hand crafted with the exception of applejack's but rarity dismissed that one on the basis that a hat didn't fit the purpose of the photo shoot.
That didn't occur to me actually, That sounds like a reasonable idea, though thorax might not have been available on such short notice seeing as he runs a small country, pity ponyvile doesn't have any resident changelings, they don't seem to leave their hive very often it would be nice to slowly start seeing them appear in the background mingling with society and helping improve relations with the ponies, particularly those in canterlot, i suspect that public opinion of changelings there isn't stellar as a result of their attempted coup.
I liked this one quite a bit. When I caught that they used a remixed, punk version of Rarity's leitmotif towards the end I started bobbing my head along with a big old smile on my face. I didn't really find the episode too contrived either; the bottle's getting mixed was an understandable mistake, Rarity not wanted to use a wig for a mag celebrating mane care and styling was logical, and magic being unable to grow hair... silly, yes, but think of how much power the stuff holds in black magic. Voodoo charms, locating spells, even demon contracting; you can do a lot of twisted things with the stuff in other media. Magic has to have SOME limits. We've seen that it can't repair unicorn horns or regrow wings either which are also part of a pony's body.
I really like how Starlight was more of a supporting character here, it helps to incorporate her more as part of the group than thus were she was the main focus or secondary.
4:45 - They boths sneezed for the first time on the same day? 7:12 - So where did Pinkie leave the twins while she went on this errand? 7:47 - All it needs is for a flash to go off as if one of the spooky creatures HAD taken a picture! 8:37 - I love Zecora! I'm with you RarityDash; we needed more of her all through the seasons! 12:34 - You're right; after all, Cranky Doodle Donkey has a hair piece! 17:15 - Rarity is carrying on about her mane but doesn't even seem to have noticed that her tail is mostly gone too! 20:32 - Um... Belladonna? Foxglove? Mayby some yew-berries for accent?
In an effort to show that she really has changed she invites the others at her house for a slumber party. (With her mother out of the house perhaps) The CMC and Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon go truth or dare and end up at the castle of the two sisters. The CMC have trouble finding out what the new pony's talent is who is rather stuck up, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon offer to help.
Josh Blackwell a new pony arrives at the school and becomes the new diamond tiara. When diamond tiara sees him and what he does she's disgusted by his behaviour and wants to apologise to everyone for what she did by helping them anyway she can. The end of the episode would be about her learning that she has changed and has become a better pony. Being upset by who you used to be is enough proof that you care for ponies and their well being.
Maybe she starts hanging out with the CMC and hang out at each of their houses exept Diamond Tiara's, when the CMC convince her to let them hang out there, Spoiled Rich comes along and messes everything up and starts arguing with her daughter
Perhaps go with another "adult" issue like teaching kids to deal with the death of a pet...perhaps Diamond has to deal with her parents getting divorced?
I'm just going to state how some the inconsistencies are explained in a way. 1. Why didn't Rarity use a wig? Rarity mentions early in the episode that she needed some fans for the photos and the wigs don't stick to your head.(Also, getting a wig would seem like cheating, Photo Finish wants all natural manes,wigs don't count as natural) 2.Why did she have a problem with losing her mane when she gave up part of her tail?(I'm seeing this being stated as a plot device) She gave up part of her tail because she really didn't need it for anything, but in this instince, Rarity actually needs the mane for the photos and losing something that you needed very soon makes people stressed out and act very differently. 3(The one I see everyone stating as a plot device)Why couldn't magic grow manes when it has been done with things like mustaches already? Mustaches and hair are very different in the amount of mass, in the episode where Spike gets a mustache for a few seconds, it takes Twilight a few seconds to actually make him grow the mustache.The mane also had to be shaped in a certain way and be an exact color, Twilight only pulled off a brown mustache(a black mustache has been shown later on but it hasn't been a different color other than black or brown).As for Discord, he really doesn't take things too serious(unless they involve Fulttershy of course) and I'm pretty sure Rarity wouldn't want someone to laugh at her even more, especially since he can make something like that spread very quickly, it would get to her already weak confidence before Fluttershy would get Discord to stop.
That makes sense... but if that's the case why did she even ever go along with Applejack, Rainbow and Fluttershy's attempts to help her? She seemed pretty happy with the cloud mane as a solution at first too. The problem being it wouldn't stay on, not that it wasn't natural.
RarityDash She was somewhat comfortable with Applejack, Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash because its her friends, Discord doesn't falls under that catergory for Rarity
That was in response to your first point. Why would she be going along for these attempts at kind of outlandish, unnatural manes and even seem for a moment satified with one made of clouds but never consider a normal wig?
How is it that Rarity can talk about her looks and I don't find it annoying? Normally when a character talks about how good looking they are or anything like that I get annoyed, but I didn't. How does a show aimed at little girls do that? When other shows that do the same thing have difficulty making me like that character? This is one of the smaller reasons why I love this show, lol. I love Rarity's punk rock look, I hope we see it again. The lesson was nice, accepting yourself no matter what. And seeing Zecora again was awesome, she's been missed Although yeah I'm shocked that they didn't think to give Rarity a wig. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.
Nguyen Tai Huy: I didn't find it as good as other Rarity episodes (In my humble opinion of course). I feel like this was an episode that could have been done in season 1, 2 or 3 because as RarityDash said the plot did seem a bit forced. Like Zephyr breeze is making wigs! He couldn't have made one for Rarity? There were no wigs in Ponyville? I found that hard to believe, but maybe that's just me. Just seems like a better plot for a season 1, 2 or 3 episode.
Well, this was a fun Rarity episode, one of my top favorites. It was great to see some familiar faces, especially Zecora who has been in the background for a good long while. I totally dig that hair style and wardrobe that Rarity used, it is an amazing look for her!
He's obviously going to have a dirty joke about the baked goods. He just has to... To be fair. It's possible that the moustache Twilight made for Spike is just a construct and would have disappeared after awhile. In this show whenever magic is used to change someone's body it's never really permanent like when Twilight tried to give Applebloom a cutie mark. Also, growing manes sound like a very intricate process and Twilight and Starlight have never done that before. They probably don't know how to only use the right amount to grow a mane instead of overpowering it.
But that would have given them a perfect excuse to make Rapunzel Dash... No serious a hair growing Rarity doll sounds like a thing Hasbro might want to have a promotion for eventually ;)
Yeah, somehow I knew that was going to be your argument. I noticed it only after I posted the original comment and couldn't edit or reply because the video was taken down. Anyway, are you sure those were real? No dragon in the show has had facial hair, and very few have had hair at all. I've counted three throughout the entire series, and it's still not clear whether or not that's actually hair. In fact, with one of the dragons that has "hair" (the one who wanted to make burps an official greeting in S6E5), I'm almost convinced those are scales because of the way they stick up in the back. Other than that, Would you really believe that to be Spike's natural hair color? What about Snips and Snails? Heck, it was used on Trixie in Magic Duel... What about her? Is gray her natural color for facial hair? As Twilight stated in this episode, and Starlight in a previous episode, when magic makes something appear/disappear, it has to come from somewhere (unless it's dark magic, but that's a topic for another day). So that must be a solution: That it came from somewhere else, not Trixie's face. Or Spike's. Or Snips' and Snails' for that matter. Artificial hair isn't that far-fetched, especially since it was such a huge part of this episode. My logic in thinking it's similar to an age spell is the way growth works. It's a slow growth over time. The age spell attempts to speed up or even reverse it. That's got to take a lot of power to do. Hair growth is the same way. To alter the process of time is something the show has only addressed once, and let's be honest, Twilight was a little loopy when she said that ("I'll just have to stop time!"). I'm not counting time travel in this because that's not altering the process of time. It only changes the outcome, not the process.
I was so looking forward to your reaction to this. I am not a huge fan of Josh Haber, but this was one of his better stand alone episodes because there were not pacing issues. He's not the best Pinkie writer though. I enjoyed this episode though because I didn't know what the solution though. Yeah you're right though, we've seen plenty of wigs. I think because Rarity was so stressed out over her mane, she wasn't thinking properly.

Actually, one would be surprised by the randomness of some of them. He's also made quite a few appearances elsewhere. If I recall, he was also a judge at one of the socials.
One thing I liked that was missed by you. When we go to Sweet Apple Acres, we see Big Mac and Sugar Belle together. Good to see that they didn't forget about them as a couple.
It does make sense that Mane magic stuff is hard to do. I mean you are interfering with another persons body genetics. And that you can't create a natural Mane out of thin air makes sense too, manes don't just pop out of your body they have roots and they need natural fabrics that come from your body, so if they wanted to grow natural hair they must've made a "hair farm" or something, and that farm must've been a living pony and I don't think that experiments on living Ponys are legal in Equestria. That of course doesn't change the fact that they could have simply bought a wig and style it like raritys Mane, but that wouldn't have helped her either because Photofinish would have noticed the difference. So yeah there's that...
Were they grown or did they just appear on their faces? It wouldn't surprise me if they were just magical constructs that would've disappeared with time.

Something like this actually happened to me, though I did it voluntarily. I was in a production of "The Adams Family" musical, playing Uncle Fester. I perspired too much for the bald cap to reliably stay on, and even after trimming my hair down a bit, it wouldn't work. So I shaved my head for the show. It took 8 months for the hair to grow back, but everyone was very supportive and the show was great. So yeah, just a little anecdote to go with the episode.

I swear, out of all the main voice actors, Tabitha must have the most fun with the meltdown and crazy moments. She is absolutely brilliant at it! Glad to see Pinkie getting a little screen time but I hope she has another episode before the season end.
I think magical hair growth probably runs into age magic territory, as it would basically have to create a localized area of time dilation without affecting the rest of Rarity's body (considering hair is made from dead skin cells). They could accidentally accelerate Rarity's aging process and cause her hair follicles to age to the point of permanent hair loss.
Not only now has discord made hair, but SO HAS TWILIGHT! She made the mustaches in Boast Busters.And Rarity is confirmed to be able to make wigs in A Friend in Deed! Cntinuityyyy
I believe she planned on using a fan during the shoot. She already planned on the flowers and the couch she wanted to use. The fan would've blown off the wig. Which was why she didn't even consider a real wig. The things AJ, Dashie and Butterball came up with were wigs in a sense.

It took me a while to really relate to this episode but after I had experienced two separate consecutive but equally terrible haircuts from two different barbers a few months ago, I had to change up my style and adopted a more 80s rocker haircut. Now I see myself in Rarity whenever I see this episode and I truly picked up a good moral from it.
I thought maybe Pinkie would be on the "Most Beautiful Manes" thing at the end after using that shampoo by accident, proving Rarity wrong about how the judges wouldn't like her mane. XD I don't know why that's the twist I was expecting.
I was always under the impression that magic in this show world's on the principal that nothing can be created out of thin air that all magic and is based on the alteration of existing objects and this episode reinforced my theory

I just checked the tv tropes page for Mlp and someone asked a similar question about why can't Twilight and Starlight grow back Rarity's mane. Here are the exact answers, 'It's possible that this is more of a focus issue; Rarity's mane is so painstakingly cared for and arranged to her exact specifications that Twilight and Starlight can't focus their magic enough to get exactly what she wants.' and this, 'To fix the mane, they would have to use a form of time acceleration to make it grow back faster and given that to make it precise enough to make the hair itself grow and not just make Rarity age super fast is something that's very tricky and can lead to problems. ' I hope that answers a few things for you.
you know... it's somewhat sad how often I'm starting to see people go ''just fix it with magic!'' :/ like seriously? ''All bottled up'' is the perfect example of why the show tries to avoid using magic to fix small things like Rarity's Mane... it doesn't FIX the problem... it just sidesteps it and basically teaches the viewers that avoiding the root of the problem and just covering it up is the way to go.... -.- The ''issue'' in this episode wasn't ever Rarity's Mane.... it was her loss of self-confidence when she lost it... fixing it with magic would've just enforced the ''You're nothing without your mane!!!'' paranoia Best part of the episode in my opinion was when they brought up time travel

I quite like this episode. Messing with the spooky eyes in the darkness, Granny Smith and Grand Pear working together, and Big Mac and Sugar Belle, just to name a few things.
At least "stabilized" the timeline fluctuations/discrepancies caused by the Twin Cakes never aging [by "moving back" and compressing a lot of other episodes like the BigMac/SugarBelle, Perfect Pear and THIS ONE into a non-linear sequence happening mostly on S5/S6].
A newborn is expected to sneeze and do other neurological spontaneous things on their first month of life [this episode happens 1 year after the end of that episode in season 2 were they were exactly 1 month old].
Also puts a hard "timeframe limitation" between a certain normal day on the life of UNICORN Twilight Sparkle and another day (about one year later) were the ALICORN Twilight had her student Starlight Glimmer helping her friend Rarity...
-> This episode starts months after Twilight´s first Hearts Warming Eve with Spike in her castle ("Hearthbreakers" [S5E20]) and the S5 finale (because Starlight is her student); but ends still before the next one in "A Hearth's Warming Tail" [S6E08]; because Rarity had her mane normal again (and that was the first Hearts Warming Eve of Starlight with them).
My only real issue with the episode is that Spike should have shown more concerned with Rarity's well being. He really should have played a bigger part in helping console her.

That said, I do like the simple conflict and upbeat 'it's all about confidence' resolution. Gives the episode the sort of tone of an episode from around about season 2.

Out of the entirety of the Mane 6, Rarity is the one that can't seem to ever have a bad episode. Also 6 weeks till the finale. I'm pretty sure we'll have a villain for the finale, so what are you banking on raritydash, an established villain, a reimagining of a g4 villain, or a new villain entirely? Lastly, Rarity isn't trying to make Lyra jealous. Starlight challenged Rarity to a waifu collecting competition and Rarity is trying to catch up. Starlight is in the lead by 2 with Trixie, Maud, Twilight, Ember, and Sunset while Rarity only has Rainbow Dash, Coco, and Sassy.
I think Chrysalis might be the villain for the finale, but I could be wrong, she also might appear in the season 8 premiere.
I think it was said somewhere that the Pony of Shadows was going to be in this season and the finale is called Shadow Play.

I chalk that up to Flurry Heart being a Alicorn, I imagine she acts more mature then other fillies her age. Same with being able to control her magic better, because she's an Alicorn. And Sunburst helping with her magic probably helps. But yeah the Cake twins need to age.

Yeah it's really weird. Normally the series is good with this stuff, I mean imagine the story potential if they aged the Cakes up? The Cake twins should technically be like a year or two older (maybe three years, at the most) then Flurry Heart and yet they still look around the same age.
Well it was stated that Cranky searched all his life for Matilda and a Baldness cure. At least he found one of the two.
From this episode we learn something interesting, magic is subject to the conservation of matter, you cannot create something from nothing and presumably cannot turn something into nothing, it all has to come and go from somewhere, a most interesting bit of information there.
Albeit this doesn't seem to be a hard and fast rule. That is Twilight said the reason to not make a mane purely out of magic is that it could have a disastrous result, not because it was impossible. We then see her and Starlight use the very magic Twilight warned Rarity about when Rarity said she was desperate enough, and we get that explosion of hair in the castle (I highly doubt they went and made a a few hundred ponies bald, plus the hair in the castle didn't look much like it was from manes, just random wild hair growth). Though perhaps with such a spell they are turning magic directly into matter, and its just unstable.
Hm, its possible that getting the exact amount of material is difficult, if their magic works on equivalent exchange they may have converted air into hair but controlling how much is transmuted may be extremely difficult hense why they ended up with so much , its also possible that hair is particularly hard to make because it is comprised of hundreds of strands rather than being a solid object like an orange or a teacup.
While the info on magic was interesting, one of course still wonders why they didn't explain why a wig wasn't an option, especially when we know wigs exist (Crankey wears one). An easy out would be to say its pretty much unknown for mares to go bald so all wigs are for male ponies and donkeys, but the "mare pattern baldness" joke makes that seem unlikely. Another option would be to have Rarity not be willing to go with hair that wasn't a part of her, but her being willing to use clouds makes that seem unlikely too. Still a good episode, the logical problems weren't enough to detract from it for me (unlike the Daring Do episode).
Hm....the only thing i can come up with is that rarity felt that using a store bought wig is like entering a store bought cake in a best cake design competition, all of the ones her friends made for her were hand crafted with the exception of applejack's but rarity dismissed that one on the basis that a hat didn't fit the purpose of the photo shoot.
That didn't occur to me actually, That sounds like a reasonable idea, though thorax might not have been available on such short notice seeing as he runs a small country, pity ponyvile doesn't have any resident changelings, they don't seem to leave their hive very often it would be nice to slowly start seeing them appear in the background mingling with society and helping improve relations with the ponies, particularly those in canterlot, i suspect that public opinion of changelings there isn't stellar as a result of their attempted coup.
I liked this one quite a bit. When I caught that they used a remixed, punk version of Rarity's leitmotif towards the end I started bobbing my head along with a big old smile on my face. I didn't really find the episode too contrived either; the bottle's getting mixed was an understandable mistake, Rarity not wanted to use a wig for a mag celebrating mane care and styling was logical, and magic being unable to grow hair... silly, yes, but think of how much power the stuff holds in black magic. Voodoo charms, locating spells, even demon contracting; you can do a lot of twisted things with the stuff in other media. Magic has to have SOME limits. We've seen that it can't repair unicorn horns or regrow wings either which are also part of a pony's body.
Good point... and also, Twilight is right about how the hair must come from somewhere since hair is not like tree come from seed.

The CMC and Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon go truth or dare and end up at the castle of the two sisters.
The CMC have trouble finding out what the new pony's talent is who is rather stuck up, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon offer to help.
Josh Blackwell a new pony arrives at the school and becomes the new diamond tiara. When diamond tiara sees him and what he does she's disgusted by his behaviour and wants to apologise to everyone for what she did by helping them anyway she can. The end of the episode would be about her learning that she has changed and has become a better pony. Being upset by who you used to be is enough proof that you care for ponies and their well being.
I think a slumber party is a great Idea! I would love to see the CMC, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon actually hanging out as friends!
Maybe she starts hanging out with the CMC and hang out at each of their houses exept Diamond Tiara's, when the CMC convince her to let them hang out there, Spoiled Rich comes along and messes everything up and starts arguing with her daughter
Perhaps go with another "adult" issue like teaching kids to deal with the death of a pet...perhaps Diamond has to deal with her parents getting divorced?

I'm just going to state how some the inconsistencies are explained in a way.
1. Why didn't Rarity use a wig?
Rarity mentions early in the episode that she needed some fans for the photos and the wigs don't stick to your head.(Also, getting a wig would seem like cheating, Photo Finish wants all natural manes,wigs don't count as natural)
2.Why did she have a problem with losing her mane when she gave up part of her tail?(I'm seeing this being stated as a plot device)
She gave up part of her tail because she really didn't need it for anything, but in this instince, Rarity actually needs the mane for the photos and losing something that you needed very soon makes people stressed out and act very differently.
3(The one I see everyone stating as a plot device)Why couldn't magic grow manes when it has been done with things like mustaches already?
Mustaches and hair are very different in the amount of mass, in the episode where Spike gets a mustache for a few seconds, it takes Twilight a few seconds to actually make him grow the mustache.The mane also had to be shaped in a certain way and be an exact color, Twilight only pulled off a brown mustache(a black mustache has been shown later on but it hasn't been a different color other than black or brown).As for Discord, he really doesn't take things too serious(unless they involve Fulttershy of course) and I'm pretty sure Rarity wouldn't want someone to laugh at her even more, especially since he can make something like that spread very quickly, it would get to her already weak confidence before Fluttershy would get Discord to stop.
That makes sense... but if that's the case why did she even ever go along with Applejack, Rainbow and Fluttershy's attempts to help her? She seemed pretty happy with the cloud mane as a solution at first too. The problem being it wouldn't stay on, not that it wasn't natural.

How is it that Rarity can talk about her looks and I don't find it annoying? Normally when a character talks about how good looking they are or anything like that I get annoyed, but I didn't. How does a show aimed at little girls do that? When other shows that do the same thing have difficulty making me like that character? This is one of the smaller reasons why I love this show, lol. I love Rarity's punk rock look, I hope we see it again. The lesson was nice, accepting yourself no matter what. And seeing Zecora again was awesome, she's been missed Although yeah I'm shocked that they didn't think to give Rarity a wig. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.

Nguyen Tai Huy: I didn't find it as good as other Rarity episodes (In my humble opinion of course). I feel like this was an episode that could have been done in season 1, 2 or 3 because as RarityDash said the plot did seem a bit forced. Like Zephyr breeze is making wigs! He couldn't have made one for Rarity? There were no wigs in Ponyville? I found that hard to believe, but maybe that's just me. Just seems like a better plot for a season 1, 2 or 3 episode.
But still, for what it was, it was enjoyable.
Well, this was a fun Rarity episode, one of my top favorites. It was great to see some familiar faces, especially Zecora who has been in the background for a good long while. I totally dig that hair style and wardrobe that Rarity used, it is an amazing look for her!

To be fair. It's possible that the moustache Twilight made for Spike is just a construct and would have disappeared after awhile. In this show whenever magic is used to change someone's body it's never really permanent like when Twilight tried to give Applebloom a cutie mark. Also, growing manes sound like a very intricate process and Twilight and Starlight have never done that before. They probably don't know how to only use the right amount to grow a mane instead of overpowering it.
But that would have given them a perfect excuse to make Rapunzel Dash...

Yeah, somehow I knew that was going to be your argument. I noticed it only after I posted the original comment and couldn't edit or reply because the video was taken down. Anyway, are you sure those were real? No dragon in the show has had facial hair, and very few have had hair at all. I've counted three throughout the entire series, and it's still not clear whether or not that's actually hair. In fact, with one of the dragons that has "hair" (the one who wanted to make burps an official greeting in S6E5), I'm almost convinced those are scales because of the way they stick up in the back. Other than that, Would you really believe that to be Spike's natural hair color? What about Snips and Snails? Heck, it was used on Trixie in Magic Duel... What about her? Is gray her natural color for facial hair? As Twilight stated in this episode, and Starlight in a previous episode, when magic makes something appear/disappear, it has to come from somewhere (unless it's dark magic, but that's a topic for another day). So that must be a solution: That it came from somewhere else, not Trixie's face. Or Spike's. Or Snips' and Snails' for that matter. Artificial hair isn't that far-fetched, especially since it was such a huge part of this episode.
My logic in thinking it's similar to an age spell is the way growth works. It's a slow growth over time. The age spell attempts to speed up or even reverse it. That's got to take a lot of power to do. Hair growth is the same way. To alter the process of time is something the show has only addressed once, and let's be honest, Twilight was a little loopy when she said that ("I'll just have to stop time!"). I'm not counting time travel in this because that's not altering the process of time. It only changes the outcome, not the process.
I was so looking forward to your reaction to this. I am not a huge fan of Josh Haber, but this was one of his better stand alone episodes because there were not pacing issues. He's not the best Pinkie writer though. I enjoyed this episode though because I didn't know what the solution though. Yeah you're right though, we've seen plenty of wigs. I think because Rarity was so stressed out over her mane, she wasn't thinking properly.

It does make sense that Mane magic stuff is hard to do. I mean you are interfering with another persons body genetics. And that you can't create a natural Mane out of thin air makes sense too, manes don't just pop out of your body they have roots and they need natural fabrics that come from your body, so if they wanted to grow natural hair they must've made a "hair farm" or something, and that farm must've been a living pony and I don't think that experiments on living Ponys are legal in Equestria. That of course doesn't change the fact that they could have simply bought a wig and style it like raritys Mane, but that wouldn't have helped her either because Photofinish would have noticed the difference.
So yeah there's that...

Something like this actually happened to me, though I did it voluntarily. I was in a production of "The Adams Family" musical, playing Uncle Fester. I perspired too much for the bald cap to reliably stay on, and even after trimming my hair down a bit, it wouldn't work. So I shaved my head for the show. It took 8 months for the hair to grow back, but everyone was very supportive and the show was great. So yeah, just a little anecdote to go with the episode.

I think magical hair growth probably runs into age magic territory, as it would basically have to create a localized area of time dilation without affecting the rest of Rarity's body (considering hair is made from dead skin cells). They could accidentally accelerate Rarity's aging process and cause her hair follicles to age to the point of permanent hair loss.

In the first Trixie episode, Twilight was doing great with her moustache/beard spell so she for sure should have been able to grow hair.
The episode we never knew we needed.
I believe she planned on using a fan during the shoot. She already planned on the flowers and the couch she wanted to use. The fan would've blown off the wig. Which was why she didn't even consider a real wig. The things AJ, Dashie and Butterball came up with were wigs in a sense.
The same season than Rarity plays a guitar is the same than she got a Punk style

Hey RarityDash! I think you might enjoy the video called Rarity's Manic Monday by Anthony Wu. It's sort of not your typical PMV, but it's still pretty good!
Even in a land of magical talking ponies, there is still no cure for hair loss. Also, we need some Photo Finish stalker fics and fan-art stat.
It took me a while to really relate to this episode but after I had experienced two separate consecutive but equally terrible haircuts from two different barbers a few months ago, I had to change up my style and adopted a more 80s rocker haircut. Now I see myself in Rarity whenever I see this episode and I truly picked up a good moral from it.
I thought maybe Pinkie would be on the "Most Beautiful Manes" thing at the end after using that shampoo by accident, proving Rarity wrong about how the judges wouldn't like her mane. XD I don't know why that's the twist I was expecting.
I was always under the impression that magic in this show world's on the principal that nothing can be created out of thin air that all magic and is based on the alteration of existing objects and this episode reinforced my theory

I just checked the tv tropes page for Mlp and someone asked a similar question about why can't Twilight and Starlight grow back Rarity's mane. Here are the exact answers, 'It's possible that this is more of a focus issue; Rarity's mane is so painstakingly cared for and arranged to her exact specifications that Twilight and Starlight can't focus their magic enough to get exactly what she wants.' and this, 'To fix the mane, they would have to use a form of time acceleration to make it grow back faster and given that to make it precise enough to make the hair itself grow and not just make Rarity age super fast is something that's very tricky and can lead to problems. ' I hope that answers a few things for you.
you know... it's somewhat sad how often I'm starting to see people go ''just fix it with magic!'' :/ like seriously?
''All bottled up'' is the perfect example of why the show tries to avoid using magic to fix small things like Rarity's Mane... it doesn't FIX the problem... it just sidesteps it and basically teaches the viewers that avoiding the root of the problem and just covering it up is the way to go.... -.-
The ''issue'' in this episode wasn't ever Rarity's Mane.... it was her loss of self-confidence when she lost it... fixing it with magic would've just enforced the ''You're nothing without your mane!!!'' paranoia
Best part of the episode in my opinion was when they brought up time travel
