Jared please HRC test them, we can understand what you're working with. Not to smear Microtech, only to understand the parameters you will be testing at. Great overview, first video I've seen of these 2 models. Answered alot of things I wondered.
No they are aweful and many have been rc tested and also cut tested. .. Not good for microtech. They even admit this is how they do it. They are art knives.
According to Larrin Thomas, the tweak Bohler added to this version of M390 offers improved edge retention, corrosion resistance and polishability. He concedes it could have increased edge retention if the carbon content was raised, but greater corrosion resistance and polishability are unlikely. Furthermore, all of this could be accomplished by a heat treatment to get a higher optimum hrc. Additionally the MK probably stands for Microtech Knives. Finally, it is very likely that this could be a marketing scheme to create a buzz for some new sexy steel.
They look like very solid knives and the ram Lock has the makings of a robust system. I was excited to see these, but I will probably never own one until they start getting thier heat treats rights. On a cheap knife you can expect suboptimal but for premium prices you should get materials that have the performance to justify that price, I feel the same way about Hinderer knives in that regard. If you just collect and never use that's your choice, but for the ones that do use them it's kind of a ripoff. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable
The new manual stitch is way nicer and more practical then the old automatic. In G10 looks awesome, it would be better also with an acute blade grind. Overall great evolution. 👍
It would be nice to see it come with different springs to adjust the lock like Kizer did with its locking system. Still an awesome lock and knife though
I work a very physical job. Carrying a folding blade, thats razor sharp, TIP UP, with an almost non-existent detent sounds like an accident waiting to happen. Ask me how i know 😂. At that price, there's no excuse to not include a solid detent.
Lucky the blade shouldn't open if it's all the way against the seem, but yes I know what you mean, I had one walk it's way the the middle of my pocket doing a roof, and on my way up the ladder it deployed and started doing what it does best lol
I definitely like the action on the stitch better for sure , but do likes both knives , they are both very easy to deploy and close with one hand … thanks for the review, looking forward to your more in-depth one about the steel…
I really like the stitch, but don't know that I would carry it. Was checking knife laws in Iowa where I live and it comments on "dagger shape" being illegal. Not that it's a dagger, but explaining that in a legal debate sounds not very promising. I've never had to use a knife in self defense but who knows? I got paranoid weeks back and stopped carrying my elementum button lock for the same reason with gravity knives being illegal here too. Which is really frustrating I absolutely love that knife!
These are super cool designs. Everyone's been waiting. And now I'm going to say the same thing that everyone else says about the HRC. I'm not saying they won't perform. But that little number means a lot to a lot of people. Myself included. So let's see how they do. Looking forward to your future videos. Great presentation.
Love the channel. I am 12 years and counting active duty infantry Marine lol This is my favorite knife of all time. From me to you though.. I've had this knife since it dropped. The steal linner rusts with light water exposure. One rainy night caused light rust for me. The ram lock physically can not handle battoning. Over all very strong on all other aspects. I'll keep this knife but fixing these 2 problems and making people aware is important. I plan on finding a 3rd party company to make titanium Linners for this knife.
Man, Microtech really dropped the ball, the way that lock works now that I can see it better, why not put a hump on the spine of the RAM lock so that it could also be used like a Demko Shark Lock?
@@williams.1130 He has a patent on the Shark lock. Putting a thumb ramp on the Ram lock would not infringe on the patent. The fidget bois would go wild for the multiple means to engage the lock.
I agree the action was really bad out of the box. Has broken in a bit, but I thought something was wrong with the knife at first with the action being as bad as it was. They need to polish the surface of the blade that makes contact with the ram lok. Mine was really rough and had a lot of texture on the blade making it not smooth when opening.

I’ve broken in plenty of knives so I’m familiar with break in periods etc. this feels more function. I love Microtechs I currently own 25 of them. Not trying to be overly critical.
Really like that more usa made companies are coming out with new knives and with this being the new hot knife makes me want one. But realistically thinking am I going to want to carry this or my 15 maxix 2 knifes. Thicker geometry and iffy ht from MT makes these knives as a cool new knife but not a knife I'd carry over others.
I think they said it's a little more corrosion resistant polish's easier not sure if they said it would have better edge retention or not though. Hopefully it does. Thanks for a great first look! 👊🏼
On the MSI, it looks like the blade touches the rear of the Ram Lok when closing. Is that so? Also, my Stitch Ram Lok makes a fairly loud “metal on metal” sound when closing. Having taken one apart, can you explain what that is? As long as the sharpened edge is contacting metal, I’m fine with the noise it makes. I love both knives (got both of mine in OD also;-}). Thanks! I love my automatic Stitch. The best ergos ever. But the blade is heavy and relatively thick. It makes me think flipping it would be an issue. The MSI looks interesting.
I know, I feel like it is the best looking and strongest auto folder. If people really take a look at the auto stitch, you realize how much engineering and how much of a tank this thing is built like, and don't even get me started with the harpoon blade, I love that shape. One more thing I noticed when someone brought it up online, the weird amazing rubbery aluminum handle has stippling all over it for grip, but some engineer was so smart he didn't put it under the pocket clip so it doesn't rip your jeans or pants up.
