Kudos for making this point in such a clear way, with excellent examples. Two additional thoughts come to mind, building on this important lesson: 1) resolving to "home" is a convenient way to transition from one pentatonic position/shape to another, in order to move around on the fretboard -- instead of resolving to one of the 2 (or sometimes 3) "1" notes in the current position, use it as an opportunity to go to a "1" somewhere else on the fretboard, and then use that new position for the next part of the solo; 2) if you're aware of the chord progression being played (rather than just the key), it can also be nice to resolve to the root of the CHORD temporarily (e.g., the 4 or the 5 in the key) -- which you can think of as the "home away from home" -- to create dynamic phrasing that meshes well with the chords. (And to use another metaphor: resolving to the "1" is like a period at the end of a sentence; resolving to a "4" or a "5" to match a chord is like a comma.)

Hi... I have to tell you, I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, and no one... I mean NO ONE has been able to tell me the secrets of playing lead or improvising solo's until I started watching your videos about 3 weeks ago. Now I load up a back track, let it go and I play like I never thought I could. I had a fair amount of of music theory, but I was never put together in a way that made sense. You sir, are a great instructor. I smile ear to ear now when I think about playing rather than being frustrated because I knew I was so close but yet so far. Thank you!! I will keep watching. :)

You know..it’s rare that you meet people in life that truly know their craft. And you can always pick them out by how good they can explain it. They are like your parents first explaining to you how to turn on a light switch. I’m am so grateful to be around in a period that we can have access to those individuals. It’s literally making my head exploded. Between, Steve Stine, Ben Eller (adds great slapstick humor to his lessons)and now you! Thank you! I will pay it back to you all through taking your courses and subscribing. Bravo to you all!

I'm looking at improvised soloing in a whole new way since discovering your videos. A lot of what you teach I'm doing already but didn't really understand why it worked or sounded good. Your lessons have taken me from a pretty mediocre player to a slightly less mediocre player. I'm heading in the right direction. Many thanks.

Well done. Looking back, I'm so grateful for my teacher who introduced me to the pentatonic scale. He started by writing a list of 7 "rules" for blues soloing. He said if I follow those rules, it would always sound good, then once the scales and rules are learned, I would learn when/how to break them. Starting/ending on the root was rule #1.
I'm not one for "rules", but it's great to have some guiding ideas to fall back on that always sound good.

I see you everyday, therefore I feel like I know you... you are a great instructor with an awesome demeanor! Please keep this channel going, keep up the great work.... A long story short,I didn’t play for two years or so and have just picked it up again recently I wish I’d had you around earlier I have a lot more of an idea about what I’m doing now.

Hey Ian! Greetings from Arizona! About a year ago, I purchased your Blues Master Class and also your Jam with Confidence Master Class. In any case, I watched this video last year, back when I was first learning the pentatonic shapes. I understood the video but was still fumbling my way through the shapes and interval names, so the video was only partially relevant (based on my skill level at the time). Well, I finally have time to start the Blues Master Class and realized that step one is to watch your blues primer playlist, so I watched this video again today.
Now that I'm getting better at soloing and improvising, I've realized that sometimes I sound good and sometimes I just sound okay. Well, after watching this video, I immediately threw on a backing track and all I can say is WOW, WOW, WOW! Immediate improvement and I sounded like a frickin pro!
Thanks for sharing your gift of teaching guitar with the world. I'm looking forward to the rest of the Blues Master Class! Take care!

For as long as I can remember, I have heard a resolution in my muse but had difficulty knowing or even finding that point of climax. You made me aware of what should be obvious, home. Home is #1. Home is where the "root" is. Looking out for #1. I cannot tell you how many song pieces I have rejected because they were all songs about "home." Trying to find my way home. Trying to get back home. Going home. I was aching for home. What a an expression of a subconscious desire to find the piece missing in my piece, I was having. It's nice to know you always have home to go to. Such a simple thing. Thanks for pointing it out. It will become the linchpin of my fretwork moving forward. With sincere gratitude.

I have a man crush on Stitch. He has created a monster. Following the Stitchmethod videos and can solo the blues anywhere on the neck. Now I just put on backing tracks and can play for hours. Learned more and have applied more in 5 days than I have in over 25 years. I now work on phrasing and landing on the right notes as opposed to trying to figure out where I'm at. Plus I can visualize measures ahead so I can simply ascend, descend or just jump to phrasing on opposite ends of the neck. Love this mans lessons. There's a place for him in heaven.

I only knew the first scale. This video and your never lose place video are fantastic. I just sat here and played a blues solo in E using the first 3 forms starting on the 3rd form as you did, moving my way down into the 2nd, down the the first. Ha, I love it. I play in a weekly jam as the house drummer and I'm gonna start bringing out my guitar to do some guitar soloing. It the best place to hone your chops. I'll be watching more videos.
