I had this same situation on my 1991 E300 and used a drimel tool with the little disk cutter. I went through about 15 disk to cut the black security ring off. It took maybe 45 minutes to a hour. Used a cut off piece from a metal coat hanger to push in the release and out it came. New tumbler popped right back in. I don't have the black theft ring anymore but don't feel many thieves want to steal a 26 year old faded paint Mercedes.
How did you remove the ignition cover(black part around the ignition)? Do I need a grinder to get it off cause I've been hitting it but it doesn't seem to be breaking.
how did u take off the security assembly? the black casing around the ignition? u didn't explain it. that's the biggest problem to get by. please tell me
I used channel locks to twist it off.. Took a bit but it came off and i reused it. Theres a socket type tool mercedes sales..push in qnd turn to the right.
so i have a 1987 w126,the key won't even turn to the first level. As I read the comment i'm asking myself,is it really possible to cut the black part with a dremel (security assembly).

I just found out I cannot remove the key from ignition even on a P position...OMG ! are the problems related one to another? anyway I can send you a pic from the shifter? Pls help..Best

How did you position the ignition position to the "ACCESORY" that allows this process to be completed?
How did the replacement go? I hear these lock up if not done in a specific way with the key.
