I've been researching packs on the internet for some time now. I thought I had explored all options. Then I came across you guys. Your shoulder harnesses look awfully interesting. Got to do some more digging. It never ends! Nice pack!
I have been looking at this because I want something slightly larger than the Tara. Will this still ride well up on the shoulders (probably without the frame sheet) as a light daypack? Or is it only a low lumbar pack?
For what it is worth, I own both the Tarahumara and the Umlindi (not the V2) and find the latter to be a significant improvement in both volumetric and weight capacity, especially when paired with the HPG recon belt. The Tara suits my day use needs and I have had no trouble employing it as an overnight pack in the rainy PNW, but the Umlindi has done an excellent job of accommodating the bulkier loads I sometimes carry (usually without the belt). To more directly answer your question, the Umlindi can easily function as a day pack (or better) because of it's compression and auxiliary straps, and I find in most cases that it rides much the same as the Tara. If I could only have one of the two packs mentioned, I would probably choose the Umlindi for it's potential capacity. I love my Tara, but the ability to add a (probably vastly overstocked) IFAK and a couple of liters of water on top of my normal loadout without hardly noticing the difference is impressive, to say the least. Also, the Umlindi comes with the removable frame sheet, Or at least mine did. I hope this helps.
@@TadShiluk I too have the Umlind v1 and the Tarahumara, mine both in black. Great packs and the volume and loading method makes them very different. I really need the black Recon belt when Umlindi gets heavily loaded, but it has been a long wait for HPG to make them, so the pack is under utilised at the moment. I also want to add a black Tarpocket, but again it's been a long wait. Getting back to the Umlindi v2, I think that the two straps on the top is an improvement, as is the belt holder. I find that the belt holder on the v1 causes my jacket to ruck up at the back as I move. I am impressed by the external access to the inner pocket, but wouldn't need a whole length pocket as I tend to use the pocket on mine for smaller items. One thing that you can be sure of is the confort of the shoulder harness. They are absolutely excellent. The quality is also exceptional. I won't be buying a Umlindi v2 because my v1 is good enough, and will probably outlive me. If I had a bigger budget though, I would splash out and have the latest version.
There's no free lunch... water bladders ALWAYS take up volume in the main bag. Doesn't matter whether there's a pocket for them or not. Unless you put them in the side pockets, which can be done on the Umlindi.
Those are both options we do on a limited run basis. Black for sure because we are doing fire packs based on this and black is the main color for those. Email us at info@hillpeoplegear.com to be placed on the notification list. On the hat, hillpeoplegear.com/westernhats
I assume either belt you offer will work great with this pack? When fitting the pack, is it best to stuff it full of whatever just to expand it and give it some weight?
Either belt works. I used to prefer the Recon, but lately I've been preferring the Prairie. You can get it 90% of the way with no weight but often you'll make an adjustment the first time or two you use it for real on the trail.
Would you say for someone wanting to do one and on occasion two night hikes this is big enough? I’m intending on bringing my hammock setup an axe and not terribly much more. My assumption is on two day hikes I can add a Pocket on the outside if I needed more space? Or would you recommend getting the UTE for that purpose?
If you live in a warm climate where you don't need much gear, it can be used in the manner you describe. If you are looking to also use it for day hikes, it is worth consideration. If this is to be a dedicated overnight bag, just go to the Ute. The Ute compresses very well and will carry weight better than the Umlindi while also offering more volume when you need it.
Yes, although the folks who gave us the name said it was one who watches. The first batch went to a South African anti-poaching unit and they named the pack for us.
Curious: what do you think the difference is between an Osprey, Gregory and bush (whatever it's called) pack? As an urban, newbie, short walk trekker, tres confused. I just want something that gets me out there and Gregory and Osprey (forgive me Osprey and Gregory) aren't cutting the mustard. I never want to leave me couch...
I have no idea what a bush pack is. Osprey and Gregory both used to be small companies that were started and run by outdoor enthusiasts. Gregory was an Eagle Scout just like I am. In those days, the packs were designed by end users who were building what they wanted. Both companies have since been bought out by larger companies which means design commitees, marketing surveys, annual color palettes, fashion reviews and who knows what else. I haven't looked closely at either brand in a long time, but I would expect to find gear more oriented towards fashion than hiking.
@@HillPeopleGear what about the Elk color, when will you do those? Are they one size fits all? 6’2” here. Need 21” waste to shoulder strap attachment point i beleive.
@@herrent shouldn't be long for elk, be sure to get on the notification list. Yep, will fit you just fine. All of our packs are torso height adjustable.

If this ever comes out in the foliage/stone combo...bruh. My credit card is ready.
Love the simplicity of all the packs.... I get a headache just looking at packs like Ospreys.
for it's size - this is the best pack i've ever used.
Great video guys! An amazing backdrop for the product overview for sure. I am excited to see these hit the market with the upgrades on the design!
Very nice! Been waiting on this for a while.
Looks great!

I would love to try this for wildland. we use nargear and its fine but for sure lacking compared to my ute (way diff dimensions i know).
Does the water bladder go behind the frame sheet? If so, does it interfere with the way the pack rides against your back??
No, it hangs behind the frame in the main bag.
Hi guys,
Nice review.
One question , would a 15inches laptop and it's protective sleeve fit inside the main compartment ?
Thx! So in other words, it would take up volume in the main bag?
There's no free lunch... water bladders ALWAYS take up volume in the main bag. Doesn't matter whether there's a pocket for them or not. Unless you put them in the side pockets, which can be done on the Umlindi.
Great review. Does it come in gray or black, or combo of those two?
Also, I love your hat, what is it, where do i get it? Thank you!

Is anything holding the frame sheet inside or is it just floating there when the lid closes?
There's a dedicated frame sheet pocket.
Very nice pack !!!
Question: the bellows pockets, will they fit a full USGI 2QT Canteen ??? (Old habits are hard to die)
Keep up the great work !!!
I don't have a USGI 2qt on hand to test, but they'll fit two nalgene silos in each pocket, so I would think so.
3:40 this pocket is tall enough for “foozees” (I can’t make out what this word is)... what’s a foozee?
Wildland firefighters use fusees to light fires, often when burning fuel inside firelines. Similar to a long flare.
Any restock soon for the elk brown one ? I've been waiting for this... :) Would it be possible to ship it to europe when it will ?
Yes, this month. We do ship to Europe. You can get on the notification list for it right on the product page.
@@HillPeopleGear This is wonderful ! Thank you for takinng the time to answer me.
does it come with the harness?
Yes, all of our packs come with the shoulder harness. It does not come with the waist belt.
Umlindi ? Is that the same as the Zulu word meaning one who waits?
Yes, although the folks who gave us the name said it was one who watches. The first batch went to a South African anti-poaching unit and they named the pack for us.
@@HillPeopleGear true thats another meaning as well and i can see it in that context as being a relevant meaning for the unit.
