I was eyeing a JBL but the striking colors and price tag is currently not for me. This Sonos looks sleek and a balance between what I need and like. Great review as always!
This is the most honest review I've seen so far. Like you said the Ray are for people that don't care about a high performance soundbar for a cheap TV with lousy speakers that they own. Sonos wants these new customers to buy more products from them, that's the whole purpose of the Ray in my opinion which is a good business move. “Gateway product”. Still I think the price is a little high when you can get better stereo soundbars that even come with a sub woofer, HDMI, and bluetooth like the Sony you mention
This sound bar is made for specific consumers who JUST want to enhance their tv audio not for the consumers looking for dolby atmos. This is why Sonos also has the arc & the beam.

Really nice review I have the Ray I really enjoy it. I think it sounds fantastic for a bedroom application. I use the arc, sub and surround speakers in my living room and I love that.
Think this is a smart product by Sonos. People who are just entering the home audio space won't realize that there are a lot of better options out there (albeit at higher price points) because this is such an upgrade over 95% of native TV speakers. They'll buy it because of the name and price then eventually realize that the Ray is just the tip of the iceberg and will begin to see the price of the Beam as justifiable. For the people in the comments who are likely well versed in this space, the Ray is still a solid product in specific situations where a One doesn't quite make sense. It's perfect for the TV in my office which is really only ever used to watch the news and occasionally sports in the background.
The Sonos Rat soundbar is alright for mixed-use. Its sound is suitable for most audio content, like vocal-centric genres like podcasts or TV shows. However, it lacks sub-bass and won't be ideal for bass-heavy music or action movies. It also has poor surround performance and it doesn't support height channels or Atmos, but overall great speaker and loved the review.
Thanks for sharing Owen, absolutely agree for the most part. It falls short in critical areas but just can't penalize it heavily simply because of the price tag!
Home theatre setup with my Arc is incredible for the living room, so I was going for the beam gen II for the bedroom. So I tested using the Arc by itself, turns out dolby atmos is WAY TOO MUCH for a bedroom, since I sleep with the TV on. Glad I ended up with Ray, gazzilion times better than the TV speaker, not too "loud" and still within the sonos ecosystem.
The background music playing the whole time you are talking its so distracting. Makes it hard for me to pay attention to what you’re saying. Otherwise this is such a well done video.

It’s a sound bar to enhance your tv in smaller rooms. It was never marketed to be a main sound bar.
