The best bus ride sensation in Indonesia is when you travel at night. That would be a great experience. You may fall asleep soundly or you may not sleep at all because night buses usually go faster than morning buses. They will race buses🤣. Don't take a sleeper bus but take an executive bus. Take a seat in the front seat, prepare your camera for moments on the road.

Also I hardly saw a truck/lorry on the highway - is there no goods movement ?? very surprising

So trucks with heavy loading.. will slow down the speed and could be dangerous & disturbe any other public vehicles... Around Java island itself.. the trip in TOLL road meantime as long as 1200 km... could take 10 - 12 hours.. so mostly its aranged the departures in the afternoon and will arrive at destination cities around midnight till morning..
Another reason why very few trucks using toll road are most of truck are overloaded and run slowly (below 30Mph in most cases). Using toll road will make tire wear faster. Tire is key component in transport cost here beside fuel.
