- Traditional stairs have lost their magic, copied, and reproduced too often making stairs in our new homes look dull. Looking to the past we can find lots of great stair designs that can really make our work stand out. Come learn from the past.

I feel like I just took a class, I love when you recommend books.
Cool. Noted.
I’m so glad to hear you say that about the stairs. I always tell my clients focus on the staircase when doing a general remodel. And instead of buying an off the shelf big box store Newell post I’ll try to find architectural salvage and then I can use simple off the shelf balustrade the staircase looks completely custom for a minimal cost.
Nice. Well done. Thx.
Thank you for what you do. Very informative.
Glad it was helpful!
So glad your came up on my feed! Planning to watch more of your content! Building a 3 story home - need help!
Welcome aboard! You can do it.
Keep em coming. Looking forward to next vid of the series
Thanks! Will do!
I am learning so much.
Thanks!!
I can't seem to find the arts and crafts/victorian stairs video teased at the end. I hope you were able to make it. Love the content!
Let me find it. Thanks!
Fantastic video! My husband and I will watch this a few times so we have some knowledge.
Great video's as always. Thank you and God bless.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great content as always. I would love to hear more comparison to French and English period revival. Not sure if that comparison makes sense from a historical standpoint, but the contrast is interesting and probably relevant for builders given the popularity of English and French style in custom homes these days.
Great suggestion! I'll work on it.
I suspect your intended question may have been; compare and contrast American Federal toward Georgian and Mansard influences? As "Georgian" influence as a period, under the rule of the four King George's rule's. Regarding France's influenced compared possibly reflected by "Jules Hardoin Mansard's" influence of "Mansard" introduction during the second Empire. Very great question, hope this leads you toward discovery!😄
The Winterthur staircase was originally only up to a 2nd floor when built. DuPont had it expanded to rise to the upper floors when he had it installed at Winterthur. .
Good to know. Thanks.
Awesome video!
Thanks so much!
A federal staircase is so beautiful. Especially the delicacy and floating nature of the staircase makes it attractive.
AGREED!
@@BrentHull I have personally not been able to figure out how one structurally achieves the floating essence of a federal staircase. A specific example is the starcase at Nathaniel Russell House. It’s built in 1808, meaning it’s to early for reinforced concrete. Could you make a video about the structural composition of these beautiful staircases?
This is great!
What determines stair location? Say the straight stair case next to front door on "center hall" homes vs. staircases where the first stair is not as close to entry. Any precedent for stairs that front and center as an architectural element vs. slightly more private? Then there's houses with servant staircases...
This is a cool topic. Excited for more!
Great, I'll work on that idea. Thanks.
Great content , My stairs need to be dress up. The spindles are just wood with no details. It’s there a tool that can use to carve some simple details or something simple to ad some elegance. Love the books reference on your videos.
Yes, I'm working on a video that can help. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@BrentHull Thanks Brent my old lady will appreciate some attention to details.
From your experience, is there a particular hardwood that you personally prefer ? I am planning on replacing the carpet and VSB stair treds and risers with Mahogany treds and Birch or Pine risers...
Good question. Oak is most typical but it makes sense because it is a very dense "hard" wood. Mahogany, while still hard, is not as hard as oak. I would say it depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you have a stair runner, you can do any wood. Choose something durable and hard, and think about matching historic precedent. Painted riser? vs stained, brackets underneath the treads, hand rails. etc. Good luck.
Thank you Brent. I appreciate your advice and experience. Here in Southern California, I live in a neighborhood that is roughly 24 years old. Hardly comparative to some of the places you highlight in your many wonderful videos. I love the Georgian period of home builds and have been working on my home to copy those features when and where I can.
Thanks again. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my inquiry.
Your welcome.
Those early colonial stairs are so tightly wound, I wish they would relax
LOL> I'll ask them to lighten up.
