This is when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. The back and forth between the gunfire and typewriter is amazing. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton famously addressed it with the back of his hand on a soldiers face. And if any of you run into any bacon sandwiches, let me know...

When I was growing up every kid knew how to pronounce Bastogne and the significance of the Battle of the Bulge, the Screaming Eagle shoulder patch and the reply to the German demand for surrender "Nuts!" The reason for that is that it was our fathers who fought WW2 and they told us about this event in particular. It was one of the greatest moments in American military history with few equals.

Yup. I appreciate the younger generations on these reactions learning about these very important historical moments, but it is a bit disappointing how they have no idea what occurred, who was involved, and the sacrifices made.

I like how the show gives us different points of view from the soldiers, medics and the people in charge. Makes it feel like different versions of the same story.👍

It wasn't about Winters being bored in Paris or wanting to fight. He felt that he was responsible for the men who served under him. he wanted to be where he could best do that.

The friendly fire incident with Moose could have been the end of Winters as commander of Easy Company. It took me several views to think of how close that shot was to Winters.
Doc was telling him to take of the boots and elevate his legs.

What they don't make clear at the battle on the dike is that Winters lead 2 companies in a battalion size counter-attack that drove the German battalion back to the river. But the Germans were dug in, and Winters didn't have any armor he disengaged. That's where the 22 men were wounded.

When it was mentioned the CO wasn't in the country, it was the 101st Division commander, General Taylor, being in England to see his wife, for her birthday, since it was supposed to be quiet, with wintertime and the Germans in bad shape. The second in command was sent back to America to help pass on some tips for Airborne training. So, the next in rank, the Division's artillery commander had to take command of the whole Division during the Battle of the Bulge.
The MASSIVE German attack was a HUGE surprise to the Allies- Hitler managed to scrape together a powerful force when the Germans were supposed to be down and out. The Ardennes Forest was considered nearly impassable for a mechanized force, though that's where the Germans punched through France in 1940, so it was lightly held by units that were recovering from huge losses or new units whose men needed to get some "safe" experience in a quite area.
So, even though it was a waste of an "elite" unit, the allies were stretched thin and needed to send anything they could get in to block the Germans and keep them from racing to the English Channel, basically splitting the American and British forces, and there was no time to get back General Taylor, to stock up on ammo, winter clothes, etc. It was an emergency, and they just rushed them in as fast as they could, which was barely fast enough. And Winters was supposed to be there, but even if he'd still had more time on leave, he and others in that situation would have tried to get back to their units if possible.

Moose forgot the password, it was dark, and the soldier on watch reacted. There was nothing to punish.

Bellerophon rode Pegasus to defeat the Chimera and they went on to kick.ass for a while after that. So the boats would "fly" the entrapped English back to safety and they could in turn continue to fight. Hence, operation Pegaus. That's how I always took it anyway... I don't know the story from the military side, just assuming the analogy.

Soldiers hardly get reprimanded for friendly fire. In the fog of war, everyone makes their own last second decisions. Every Soldier is sleep deprived, sometimes communication is a problem, not knowing where the enemy could come from, etc. Friendly fire is just part of war, the only way I can see you getting in trouble for friendly fire is refusing to ceasefire after orders have been issued.

I don't think a smirk at the end as he watched the 101st march towards Bagstone. Rather, he knew that it was going to be horrible. He knew that many of the men he was looking at was going to die. The Battle of the Bulge which they were heading into came as a complete surprise to the Allies. The entire battalion was going to engage, and as the Executive Officer he would be deployed as well, but not as a combatant- unless absolutely necessary.

Sometimes it's a little odd what the show runners choose to show us. For instance, from what we get to see of Winters trip to Paris, you could come away thinking he didn't have a good time there, when in fact, he did. In letters to his pen-pal, DeEtta Almon, he told her he had a good time and did a lot of the typical tourist stuff you would imagine most people doing. But we don't see any of that.
