    1. Attach breast shields (also called flanges) to the connectors and to the bottles.
    2. Attach the yellow piston to the yellow connector.
    3. Insert the cylindrical end of the yellow connector into the similarly sized hole on the blue pump.
    4. Insert the end of the piston into the white holder on the blue are of the pump.
    5. Insert the triangular ends of the tubes into the yellow connector.
    6. Insert the the other ends of the tubes into the breast shields.
    7. Put the breast shields against your breasts with your nipples centered.
    8. Turn the suction dial on the piston to MIN.
    9. Turn the speed to 7.
    10. Turn the pump on.
    11. Let the pump run for 2-3 minutes.
    12. Once you see sprays of milk going into the breast shields or feel your milk letting down (not all women feel this), turn the speed dial down to about 4, and turn the suction dial up towards MAX. Only turn it up as high as you comfortably can.
    13. Pump as long as desired, usually 15-20 minutes.
    14. Some women find that after 10 minutes or so, it can help to turn the suction back down and the speed back up for a few minutes. This may start another let-down reflex.
    15. Massage your breasts for the last 5-10 minutes of your pumping session.
    16. When you finish, turn the pump off.
    17. Disconnect the tubes from the breast shields, then turn the pump on again for a minute or two. This will clear any condensation from the tubes.

Aside from the parts that are in contact with breast milk, do I need to wash the other parts (piston, tubing, etc.)?

Good question! No, you don't need to wash the tubing or the piston. Just make sure to run the pump after you are done until the tubing is dry inside.

Hi Jessica, great video. Question: our piston snapped off the main unit, looks like the clip that holds it broke (clip on piston). Where can I go to purchase a replacement? I understand this is a very old machine so here's hoping I can even find one.

I heard that Medela stopped making them. If you're in the US I would try calling your local WIC or breastfeeding coalition. I know our WIC office ends up with lots of spare pump parts around. Even if you're not eligible for WIC I think they might help you out if they have what you need. I hope you can find it!

hi I was wondering what do I do if the suction stopped working on the breast pump

It's very likely that you need some new little white valves... those little white circle things. If that doesn't fix it you may need a new piston which usually means getting a whole new kit. If your pump is from WIC they'll just give you a new kit. Otherwise you'll probably have to buy one. I hope it's the valves... it often is.

Jessica Barton those "little white things" are actually called membranes. the valve is the yellow piece that the membrane attaches to.

False! Most women are smaller than the 24mm that comes with. Most women range from 17mm-21mm. Fact: most women use the wrong size flange due to lack of knowledge of lactation consultants!!!!
