    The trouble with these "Y" blocks getting oil to the valve train was a mis-aligment of the oil hole in the block with the head. I would bore these out so more oil would pass. It worked.

      We used to run a tube between the rocker returns as most times too much oil one side none on other .

      @@dondesnoo1771 Been there and done that so I pulled the heads and drilled the holes alot bigger where they mismatched. Worked perfect.

      ROBERT snyder my engine I could run a wire all the way down.glad that works for you .I understand that after 60 the cam bearings have a groove instead of single hole .have 59ranchero wondering if the bigger Lincoln motors compatible w 292 -312 ?once had a 55capri threw a rod sold to a collector . theese tended to have oil pump freeze up break the allen shaft no oil pressure .had 2that happened too had 9 of theese engines over the yrs.there iffy at best .still 2 under a tree.thanx for yr reply.

    Engine builders has one of these "MEL" engines punched to 383 cu. in. and it makes 600hp.

    • @DeanMk1
      @DeanMk1 5 років тому +5

      Technically, this isn't a MEL V8. Displacements for the actual MEL's were 383, 410, 430 and 462. This is an older design.

      FoMoCo always amortized it's new bore center transfer lines on other ending families. The 279 to 368 Y block shares the Ford FE and FT engines 4-5⁄8 in bore spacing. Ford kept the same transfer line tooling alive from 1952 to 1977. The 383-462 MEL, a Lima plant engine, used the same tooling to make the Lima 385 engines, the 370/429/460 Big Block Ford's. The little Ford Y block, the 239-312, used the same 4-³/8 " bore centers that gave birth to the thinwall 221-255-260-289-302-351 and 335 series 351C/351M/400 engines.

    What bellhousing did you use? I need to run a Lincoln 368 on my test stand and can't find a bellhousing that will mate to it.

    I HAVE A 1956 Continental which as you know also came with a Y-Block 368CID. the car was owned by a senior gentleman that ran it until it collapsed than parked until he passed. the car set in an outside shed for more than 50 years. the car is complete less the Hubcaps. all the inside electricals work but....the engine is frozen. no matter what oils and solvents used it would not come loose. took starter, fan belts, Valve train, spark plugs OFF and used specialty tools to try to move it through the converter and no luck, a breaker bar also failed. I was advised to tap the valves with a mallet to loosen the valves and no luck... this process has been going on for more than a year. finally my question. have you had anything like this in your experience? would it be worth trying to rebuild this motor (marvel Mystery oil and liquid-tool has not penetrated though three of the cylinders), or try and find a 368 motor from a1956/57 Lincoln Premier or a continental from these same years. finally, if I decided to Resto-Mod the car what more available Engine would you recommend . Thank you in advance

      Had a machine shop do my motor. They had to break the pistons to pieces & the same for valves. Worth it though as the block was fine to machine. Called Mummert & bought a complete kit to build the motor. .40 over & stroked to 425ci. 400hp

    even tho its a yblock it won't interchange with the 292 or 312 heads and intake or valve covers will it?

      The bore spacing of the Ford Y block is the same as the future small block, Windsor and Cleveland at 4.38". The Lincoln Y block bore spacing is the same as the FE at 4.63" but the Lincoln Y block can be stroked more than the FE so no, not gonna happen. In 1958, the FE came out and also the MEL Big Block with the same 4.9" bore spacing as the future 385 series 429 and 460. By the way, FE means Ford Engine. MEL means Mercury Edsel Lincoln. The word Edsel was not used in two engine families at the same time despite what many keep trying to tell us.
