  • I often mount an Insta360 camera on my pack to record my off trail cross country downhill skiing videos. In this video I compare 4 different pole positions; in front, from the side, directly above and from behind. I make several laps up and down a hill in the Bridger National Forest of Western Wyoming and compare the different view perspectives.

I like the “pole left side” perspective. I’ve been filming my own XC Ski adventures using a GoPro, it’s a lot of work to get good shots other than than the POV viewpoint. Amazing technology.

I've been using my Insta360 more than my GoPro lately, but the GoPro does have better video and sound quality. I have a foam cover on my GoPro and that helps to reduce the wind noise significantly. The audio from the Insta360 is almost unusable unless you are standing still with little or no wind. Many times I'll dub the audio from the GoPro to the Insta360 in post production. As you can imagine, skiing with a pole extended in front or to the side also has its challenges and I'm always worried that I'll take a tumble and break or lose an expensive camera. Thanks for tuning in and I hope you are having a great week.

I recorded this video in late February and the snow conditions were ideal. Thanks for tuning in and for posting.

Hello Tom, This video is fantastic! First off, I’m really sorry that I missed this video when it was posted. We had a very early spring here in the N.E. where the 60* weather compelled me to abandon my skis in favor of my road bike. I usually have a hard time adjusting to this time of season so couldn’t bear to see any more ski videos. What changed today was when my boss told me that he’s thinking of buying and Insta360 for our accident (transportation) investigation work and I instantly thought your good shares.

I do enjoy the 360 camera but it does have its limitations. I picked up their newest camera, the X4, this spring and I'm hoping the higher resolution will make it more useful. If you are curious, here is link to a sample 8K 360 video that I uploaded to UA-cam just as a test. ua-cam.com/video/hi-Yd9fpVSI/v-deo.html I'm glad you were finally able to see this video. Take care, have a great summer, and be safe on your bike outing.

@@tomm9850 Yes, I suppose the high resolution will help to crop the video down. I was chatting with Jarred at Tahoe Tr Guide, and really, every camera (and lens) has its frustrating limits. Last year, I thought the iPhone 15 with its 3 lenses would be all that I would need but I’m still working on it my ski shots. Its wasn’t a waste since I needed a phone, lol.

These videos really demonstrate your telemark skiing very well to people who might need a little more demonstration in developing their technique. The camera pointing out in front seems like a good way to have a walking (and skiing) dialog with your audience. I suspect your dislike for this view, is what I will now call the ‘Parrot’ view, where we, the audience are like a sitting parrot on your shoulder and your leaning back to counter balance yourself. Perhaps instead of your shoulder, it could be mounted to your waist and have the same perspective as the bonus clip. To address the accident potential, we need to find an expendable fail point in the rig. I have a hard plastic, phone mount with go-pro style hing arm made by Peak Design. In two separate fall occasions, I had the arm break on me rather than my phone. Not desirable, but cost effective. Keep up with the alternating view points, they really make an exciting viewing of you and the fantastic location you’re at.

Insta360 sells a "snow kit" which includes a chest and helmet mount and a short extension rod. I might have to give that a try at some point.
