Antonio Pappano is my teacher and guide at the moment. At the age of 58 I have just discovered the joys of Opera... I love his passion and knowledge. Thank you Antonio 🙏
I am very happy that Leontyne Price was featured as well. She has a very beautiful, warm tone full of tragic. And of course her biography is most remarkable as well. A legendary singer and person.
Nilsson, Callas, Sutherland, Price, Tebaldi-Yes! Then, Netrebko and Damrau-the implicit message: how dramatically standards have fallen. Legends versus shameless mediocrity.
Sadly, all of the example of Callas they show here is of her well past her vocal prime. The real Callas voice was what we heard before she became so thin and glamorous. And they don't mention her unequalled ability to sing from the heaviest dramatic soprano roles to the lightest coloratura roles, or her phenomenal florid technique. Imagine singing Brünnhilde and Puritani's Elvira in one week, which is exactly what she was capable of doing. Sutherland wasn't over 6 feet tall (maybe in high heels). She was about the same height as Callas, who was 5' 8 1/2" .
Dear Marstro Pappano. I have a query for you. I am an old lady but I am also a trained musician as a pianist who has also acted as accompanist for singers. In my youth I was fortunate enough to hear sopranos like Callas, Tebaldi, Sutherland, Cabbalet, Gencer, Simionato and many others of that generation. They were amazing artists. When I hear sopranos nowadays all I hear is a very annoying vibrato on most notes which spoils the melodic line of the piece they are singing. Why do the voice teachers of today not train their pupils to be able to hold a long note steady without vibrato apart of on an occasional basis when it will enhance the melody?why has this change happened and why is it accepted as if this is what the composer intended? I would be grateful for an adequate explanation to this phenomenon. Does anyone know how and why this has happened? Any reply from anyone with an explanation would be greatly appreciated.
The adjective "american" is incorrectly used by people, not only who was born in the US is american as I said, but also Mexicans, Canadians, Brazilians like me and others countries that is located in the american continent.
16:00 he talks about vibrato and non-vibrato. I remember reading about singing in some old reference book which declared that vibrato was a form of ornamentation. I don't understand why in opera especially vibrato is used (to a greater or lesser extent) absolutely all the time! Not ornamental but absolutely necessary!! Can opera singers not sing plain and clear like this singer here?
You said it yourself- it's not ornamental, it's necessary. I don't know what old book you read, but it was 100% incorrect if it said that vibrato (in signing) was anything but a natural phenomenon that happens when singing fully released. For practically every other instrument, vibrato is "fake", and applied to the sound. I'm singing, it is the default when fully open.
Netrebko is nothing more than a dark full lyric soprano. Not only is she just singing it fff she is just pushing. Yeah she could get through it but really now.. just absurd.
Possibly an unpopular opinion …. I’m really not a fan of Maria Callas’ voice 😅 of course I can appreciate technically she is a very skilled actress and she is a gifted singer, but for me to listen to she is too shrill and not enough tone for my liking. Don’t know if anyone thinks the same as me but would be interested to see if I am not alone 😂
Netrebko can't work with her voice. NO, not in a million years. Voice is full of flaws and laziness. AND her is only hit the heavy beat and sloppy afterward. She is not even good enough for pop singing. OK!?! What's wrong with the world?
So overwrought in your criticism! (and putting aside her reprehensible political views, and whatever the state of her voice today) I'm no Netrebko groupie but unlike almost everyone else today she has been the real deal. She along with Kaufmann are the only superstars in opera today which does say a lot about the artform-but we can only listen to old recordings or live with it. Actually saw her as Lady Macbeth a while back-she was quite good.
Superb conductor it’s unfortunate for him that there are so few genuinely great opera singers around today.
When Tebaldi sings a channel to heaven opens . Her voice is on another level.
Antonio Pappano Thank you for this amazing sharing of your knowledge What a wonderous program 👏

I love his passion and knowledge.
Thank you Antonio 🙏
Leontyne Price has probably the most perfect voice ever! Love that woman!
I am very happy that Leontyne Price was featured as well. She has a very beautiful, warm tone full of tragic. And of course her biography is most remarkable as well. A legendary singer and person.
Este programa de pappano es como u. Descubrimiento al mundo de la tipología vocal
WHAT CAN ONE SAY BUT... THANK YOU MAESTRO!
As someone who loves to sing and knows absolutely nothing about it, this kind of thing is super interesting
Thank you so much for posting these. I’ve been searching everywhere for these episodes. 🙏 😀
An incredible documentary! Thank you for those making it and, Frank, for posting it!
17:00 her voice is really gorgeous! And she is too
Great series. Correction: Barbara Hannigan is Canadian not American.

Mein Gott in Himmel! From Flagstad and Callas to Netrebko.
Shocking, right?
Netrebko as Lady Macbeth.... was probably not a good idea.
She was better, it seems to me, when she sang a role like, e.g., Norina. She has pushed too much.

Sorry, but soprano and conductor Barbara Hannigan is not American - she is CANADIAN! She hails from my home province of Nova Scotia.
Thank you so much, as I was about to post the same after listening to this hugely enjoyable program
Canada is a north american country, so yes, she's american.
The adjective "american" is incorrectly used by people, not only who was born in the US is american as I said, but also Mexicans, Canadians, Brazilians like me and others countries that is located in the american continent.
no mention of monserrat caballe
55:00 escuchen esa armonia y orquestacion parece Puccini

Yo no creo que el señor Pappano, opine sobre Netrebko, como veo en algunas opiniones de estos comentarios.
WHY DO WE NEVER HEAR ABOUT MIMI COERTSE? IT'S A SHAME
3:52 horrible 3:43 terrible
She worser than mosquito freak pavaroti. No doubt. Fake dark, masky, voce ingolata. Pathetic yells
Il bel canto e il musical due mondi a parte, vedo che vi piace mescolare, questa e' una gran rovina complimenti!
Netrebko is nothing more than a dark full lyric soprano. Not only is she just singing it fff she is just pushing. Yeah she could get through it but really now.. just absurd.
I prefer it with vibrato all through. The straight tone is unpleasant to my ear.
The first voice sounds tired, and I mean very tired.
Can become cloying unless your a great singer like this one. Obviously talking about Jussi Bjorling.

Netrebko HAD a nice voice but now I don't like her technique her note. She is a leggero soprano, not a dramatic one.
Netrebko can't work with her voice. NO, not in a million years. Voice is full of flaws and laziness. AND her is only hit the heavy beat and sloppy afterward. She is not even good enough for pop singing. OK!?! What's wrong with the world?
Dreadful singing at the 3:36 mark...caterwauling.
