This makes the Ubuyashiki speech even more badass
I like that demon slayer is aware what kind of series it is. It wasn’t made out to be a long running series and is done with it
It doesn't try to do anything it's not equipped to do, for sure
I respect the hell out of the author for telling their story and not extended the story beyond what it needed. I’m so incredibly hyped for the final arc movies
@@nicholaskling2425 Same here!
@@gallenberger1 As a person who read all of demon slayer, I would like to said thank you for showing respect for Demon Slayer.... Muzan saws Tanjiro blade before turning into dust( for now)
I went in with the whole "Demon slayer isn't that deep" idea on my mind only to be surprised numerous times when I kept finding things that were deeper than what some here on youtube made it out to be.
At first I thought it was chance but when I kept finding more and more I got convinced that there is substance here. Demon slayer does things differently as you said being more character focused than plot driven which I've really come to appreciate. It makes me FEEL for almost every character that is introduced whether it be good or bad which I'll take over indifference.
@@iamagirl9938 I'm with ya 100%
I swear child slaughter is so much common in this show that now it feels like that its just nothing but random event to happen.
@@Herdz1007 so true
We all know that DS has a simple story, but I see quite a lot of people misunderstood simplicity as no depths and I think one of the reason for this is DS heavily reference japanese culture which they're unfamiliar with unless they do some research on it.
Couldn't agree more
“Gets screwed” bro, I’m dying over here!😂😂😂😂😂
😅
Bro you forgot rui the lower 5 demon, he was said to be muzan's favorite that because he was sick as a human just like muzan was, you can said rui back story foreshadowed muzan's back story, great video BTW
Totally missed that one. That's an amazing catch!
Another thing I just realized he’s also similar to Muzan in how he uses his power as a demon afterwards to achieve a goal he is obsessed with. Muzan is obsessed with immortality and creates strong demons to become his Upper Moons for the sole purpose of finding the blue spider lily & achieving complete immortality by conquering the sun, and Rui is obsessed with the concept of family that he uses his power to convince demons to become his “family” but always looking for ones that are loyal and have that familial bond. Both of them will eventually succumb to the slayers as a result of their obsessions.
One thing you might’ve forgot is that the main 5 kids represent the five senses; Tanjiro (smell), Zenitsu (hearing), Inosuke (Touch cuz he can predict movements based on feeling vibrations, is super flexible, and can move his organs around), Kanao (sight cuz her vermilion eyes. Don’t search that up if u don’t want spoilers), and Genya (taste cuz of the whole eating demons thing)!!
ALSO, as for the way they all fall into the castle and what it foreshadows, it’s the lighting. There are red and yellow lightings. One means the character will die and one means they’ll leave. I won’t spoil which one tho. Just look it up.
Thank you for this video. I cannot wait for the haters to see this and actually understand Demon Slayer’s depth instead of mostly blindly hating it.
@RoastedPotato-ns1te Hopefully!
1:57 another thing I like about this symbolism of dragon and tiger is that Water Breathing is represented by a dragon and Flame Breathing is represented by a tiger, and Rengoku told Tanjiro was that there has always been a Flame and Water Hashira, symbolizing the Hashira are there to keep the balance in check
It really interested me to learn the fact there’s always been a Water and Flame Hashira considering four of the Hashira created their own Breathing techniques (Serpent, Insect, Love, and Sound breathing), also symbolic to the time era they’re in. Taisho era was a cultural shift, as seen throughout the anime with the mixture of traditional culture and more Western influence, so seeing that nearly half of the Hashira are masters of completely new breathing styles along with the staple breathing styles is a cool detail to incorporate for the time period it’s set in.
Love this detail
I'm glad to see some Muzan respect. Won't go into manga spoilers but he's the perfect villain for the series. One of the best written characters for sure.
Glad to hear!
love this video, any thing appreciating demon slayer is amazing.
but i have to be honest, you missed the MAIN thing about demon slayer's writing. everything else you mentioned comes in the periphery, they're merely additions to the solid foundation of the main theme of demon slayer - connected bonds and legacy.
without getting into manga spoilers:
- tanjiro learning sun breathing from his dad
- giyuu putting on his haori from the 2 most important people in his life, and tanjiro reminding him that he has to live and "make use of what sabito (and tsutako) have entrusted to him". moreover, tanjiro having met sabito before, connecting tanjiro and giyuu through not just their own budding friendships but also through _both_ of their pasts back in mt. sagiri
- tanjiro using kyojuro's sword hilt, as senjuro entrusted kyojuro's legacy onto tanjiro
- shinobu putting on kanae's haori, harbouring anger over demons for killing her sister
- muichiro's backstory unlocking to us as viewers when his memories connect to his past and the people he loves
- mitsuri getting connected to her own past as she discovers the hashiras as people just as eccentric as herself
- tengen choosing to live and convincing his wives to do so, as an act of resisting the samurai past where death was the only thing honoured
- kyojuro becoming a hashira to carry shinjuro's duties, working ahead to make ruka proud
- nezuko's demon art being the same sun-flames that tanjiro uses in his breathing
- and most importantly, the mark. we learn in the anime that the mark has been passed on since the sengoku period, and that it gets passed on to others through connections and resonance
all of this is just the beginning, infinity castle and sunrise countdown is where this major theme finally pays off. demon slayer, all the way from chapter 1 to chapter 205.6, is entirely about this theme. i would go so far as to disagree that demon slayer is a character-driven story (let alone plot-driven). the characters are simply tools for _this_ in particular.
i guess for now in the anime it doesn't seem significant as compared to a lot of other things demon slayer has going on, but i assure you, it's is why demon slayer exists entirely. not once did it stray from legacy and bonds. the epilogue of demon slayer is where it's all heading. to me that's why demon slayer has an exceptional ending too. people might disagree on whether it's good, but no one can disagree that it's consistent.
edit to add: ahhh man i can't even handle my excitement when it comes to kny's themes. even though we've already seen a lot of setup in the anime, infinity castle and sunrise countdown simply blows everything we've seen yet out the park, especially the battle with upper moon 1. it's insane what gotouge could write in just 200 chapters. such an ambitious theme. combined the insane fucking writing with whatever ufotable may be brewing right now, it's going to be unbelievable.
8:54 it’s really big manga spoilers
the characters who fall with yellow light in the background are the characters who live the final battle (they survive the infinity castle & final muzan fight), the characters with red backgrounds are the characters who die in the final battle (they either died in the castle or during the final muzan fight).
NO MOVIE SPOILERS
Does the depth of Demon Slayer get slept on?
No ngl demon slayer imo doesnt have a great plot progression. Its just like a pig with makeup on. It has great animation but no substance.
Ya it's a battle/war arc it's about fights
@Dello678 It's a character driven story over plot, no doubt
@@gallenberger1 IMO the characters are okay to good but not that great. I feel the same about jjk. Hot take: jjk and demon slayer are the worst of modern shonen.
@Dello678 I'm lower on JJK than most, but I think that's harsh
Love your videos man
Demon Slayer is the first Manga I Bought
Thanks! DS is a good one
I’ve always loved when a story leans into its central themes, and Demon Slayer goes to such lengths to acknowledge its themes in every aspect of the story. I think that’s why, after 5 years since I first watched it, I haven’t lost my interest in it and I’m STILL frequently finding new things think about it.
Demon Slayer at its core is about embracing humanity, whether that’s in the form of empathy, vulnerability, connections, or just your own emotions. That’s why all the demons are driven by a desire to reject those things. (Ex: Rui, Akaza, Daki & Gyutaro.) And in the end, they’re all defeated by people embracing the same qualities they rejected in themselves.
Also, I just love how well every fight weaves together their central ideological conflict. Rengoku vs. Akaza is about using strength to fight for what you believe, vs. a pure, invulnerable ideal of strength that only exists for the sake of it. And you see that in how Rengoku’s strength is inferior in the end, but he achieves everything he was fighting for, whereas Akaza walks away with nothing that he wanted.
I could name more examples, but I don’t want to make this comment ten paragraphs long, lol. Mitsuri vs. Hantengu is really the only major fight that’s weak in that regard. (Yet another example of Mitsuri getting the short end of the stick.)
Anyways, people gotta start giving DS some more credit. It’s got so much emotional and ideological depth to it, but it relies on the audience to understand it’s emotional core, and most people unfortunately don’t seem willing to put in that tiny amount of effort.
Sorry for the yapfest, I was holding myself back from typing more, but yeah, DS is such a compelling story when it comes to themes, characterization, symbolism, and a surprisingly thorough setup for its plot. Thank you for the video and really I hope you don’t get swarmed by haters in the comments.
Great comment! This is exactly the type of stuff people are missing. You would've made a better vid than me!
Personally I would love to hear more from you
Mitsuri doesn't get the short end of the stick at all, her thematic parallels in the Hantengu fight are powerful like all the rest
@natalimoina Oh? I’d love to hear your thoughts, cause I thought long and hard on this and couldn’t find an over arching theme for their fight that really fit and brought both of their arcs together.
I really hope this video could make the haters appreciate more Demon Slayer. I already considered it my favorite anime and this video just helps to reinforce it 🤟👌🔥👑
They should read some comments in here too. They do a better job explaining it than I do 🤣
Did not catch a lot of the Muzan stuff on first watch
I thought we all where on an agreement that Demon slayer has a Simple but very well done story.
Reminds a lot of Dragonball/Dragon ball Z
@cbp117 Not what I've heard unfortunately
I hope this video reaches the haters I really hope it.
Btw to the creator of this vdeo what I wanna tell u is by the end of the series u will totally forget about Rengoku and Tengen and question urself who actually is ur fav hashira.Same for the Kamado squad. And the remaining demons that they r gonna fight r the best written villains in the show.
@@noorahamadcma Bold statement!
Edit: maybe this comment is just far too long, either way I'm trying to chop it up into pieces and see if youtube still deletes it
Another thing that makes Demon Slayer so phenomenal is just how efficient it is at getting across it's themes, messages and character dynamics. A single chapter in the manga spent on dialogue and such shows so much about the characters. From tiny exchanges of dialogue between characters, parallels between characters fighting each other, to character introductions, even just what abilities they use (especially easy with the demons), you can piece together large parts of their past with ease. I'm using ED with Gyutaro, Tengen and Tanjiro as a primary example, because imo ED the 2nd best arc behind Infinity Castle (which I obviously don't want to spoil for you, as it really is a spectacular conclusion to the series and many long running character arcs imo)
For demons, with their powers giving away and tying into so much of their characters (no spoilers for stuff you haven't seen):
Susamaru: Temari (A childs toy, she was turned demon while only a little girl)
Rui: Spider's thread (Bonds, literally, but also a trap keeping people stuck in an abuse home, plus an offspring murdering its parents as is seen in many arachnid species)
Akaza: Martial arts (Self-improvement and gaining strength, not gonna elaborate any further here)
Daki: Obi (A symbol of wealth and status, which she never got to achieve, and womanhood which yeah)
Gyutaro: Poisonous Blood (Blood = family, but poisonous as he ends inadvertently up "poisoning" Ume by having her become a demon and raising her to be a complete shit)
Gyokko: Pots (Literally just him as a craftsman/artist)
Hatengu: Emotions, needing to be protected by others (A bit more abstract, but him disassociating himself from his emotions. Believing himself to be an innocent victim, he cuts himself off from responsibility, needing to be protected by others because of how small and pitiful he makes himself out to be)
When Nezuko is about to lose herself and eat the woman in the ED while fighting Daki, we get Nezuko having to be reined in, and comforted by Tanjiro, by singing a lullaby. Just afterwards, we get Gyutaro's introduction. He consoles his sister, insulting her a bit, but obviously showing a lot of affection for her, a strange way to introduce the big bad of the arc (and interestingly enough one of the few characters where the very first impression we get isn't them being a complete asshat). Other than it being a great bit of creepy and repulsive body horror with him popping out of her back like that, we already have an obvious parallel between Tanjiro and Gyutaro - while they both care deeply for their little sisters, Tanjiro ensures his demonic sister doesn't stray from the right path, while Gyutaro enables her to act just as monstrous as she pleases, and leads her down a dark path.
Then with Tengen, his first thought is to compliment him an extremely bitter and spiteful way. Complaining about Tengen being gifted with Talent and good looks, and being infuriated that he himself doesn't have this. (Ironically, he's way more "gifted" than Tengen - first thing Tengen notes about him is "what insane instincts" (something you're born with). All of Tengens skills were learned through excruciating training since he was a child, while Gyutaro even as malnourished child with no training was beating up grown men with ease, and cutting a samurai along with his blade in half with a rusty farming tool, while fatally wounded). They both have extreme self-esteem issues, and worked unsavory jobs, yet they are the exact opposites in the actions they take.
(Follow up, trying to see if it will work properly)
Gyutaro dedicated his life to protecting his sibling, while Tengen had killed several of his own. Gyutaro took the name (literally Gyu, a job, Taro, meaning eldest son) of his job, while Tengen does everything he can to distance himself from his clan and a typical ninja: brash, loud and boisterous. Where Gyutaro wants to drag everyone down with his self-loathing, Tengen puts on a brave front to inspire his comrades. Gyutaro believes the world is indebted to him and Ume, Tengen believes he himself is indebted to the world for his sins. Also this isn't really being deep or anything but I also just think Tengen looks sick, and throwing explosives all around is just plain awesome, and all of the JJBA-esque techniques and stuff he does is great.
Finally, the scene where Gyutaro is trying to break Tanjiro's spirit. This one is self explanatory, it's both Gyutaro being a sadistic shit towards Tanjiro, but also just a clear expression of his own self-hatred. Tanjiro is ugly, filthy and disgusting. A big brother that can't protect his little sister is worthless, just like himself. It's only 3 individual scenes and moments, less than 1 chapters worth of pages, and we already have essentially the entirety of his character laid out. Noticeably, Tanjiro's self-doubt is way less prevalent throughout the rest of the series after the battle; and the season ends with Tanjiro hugging his friends and exclaiming how grateful he is to still have them.
It all ties in very nicely with the main theme of KnY, the importance of bonds, and Tanjiro's vision of Nezuko when he was unconscious for the first time during the arc after Tengen got poisoned and stopped his heart, with Nezuko telling him to stop apologizing and that no matter how poor or hungry they are, they can be happy as long as they're together. Gyutaro's belief that he would end up as a demon no matter how many times he is reincarnated, and that he would always hate happy people is wrong: when he remembers his promise to Ume, he was noticeably looking very happy, even though their life was kinda shit. As he realizes that family all he needs to be happy himself, he walks on into hell, reverting from his demon form to his human form as he enters the fire. "Family is more important than anything and all you need" is not at all an original idea but it's presented in such a beautiful way.
This ramble devolved a bit from what it originally was supposed to be, I can't help it, Tengoat is my favorite Hashira (along with Muichiro and Shinobu), and Incel Bugman and his Girlboss Sister are my favorite demons from the series along with Basketball Bruce Lee. I think you're gonna love Akazas story when you get to him in the movies. (Also you should get way more views, your channel is seriously underrated)
Maybe I should've left the video idea up to you 😅

Spoilers here :
the yummiest part about demon slayer is how well the execution of the message is portrayed through different battles of ideals, stakes and symbolism, how quotes and sayings from different characters are not only delivering the point to the audience as a reminder, but have insane value that enhances the importance of message inside the story as well . Yoriichi was the cherry on top of this manga, for me personally the greatest depiction of the strongest archetype, his whole dynamic with Muzan, how flawed he was, despite being the pinnacle of humanity and still failing to destroy the root of demons, him realizing how many innocent souls he doomed , and not understanding that he created the solution for the problem as well which is the breathing style for demon slayers.
The burden of the strongest is accepting the weight of responsibilities all by yourself since the strongest actions require the strongest will and that's how everyone perceives it. But despite the immense strength the flaw of the strongest is his mindset, where he believes he is obliged to handle everything all by himself because hopes of his significant ones cannot be failed, and usually what leads to this mentality is a deep loss of dearest people who he swore to protect and take care of.
Yoriichi's greatest asset was not his power but his attitude, how empathetic and merciful he was with humans and even Tamayo(who was still a demon at that time). He viewed himself as being born to this world to remove Muzan from it when the only one who succeeded was Tanjiro. Tanjiro defeated Muzan while never being even remotely close to the strongest of his era(Gyomei) , failed to completely master Sun Breathing yet still remained victorious.
Because he was not alone.
Yoriichi's incredible dynamic with Tanjiro where Yoriichi let his failures define him and decided to carry on the fate of the conflict by himself alone, while Tanjiro despite the setbacks kept contributing to the victory with everyone else.
The tremendous flaw of the breathing style creator was ignoring the importance of contribution and cooperation which was the only reason why the story ended happily. And ironically thanks to his legacy only.
Demon slayer portrayed the reason why humanity survived in real life and evolved. We are social creatures hence our collaborative actions and willingness to contribute are the keys to actual greatness.
This manga was unfortunately rushed due to the author's family problems, and the story pace might have been a little bit better, but God I love the messages and characters there especially when nowadays everything screams about individualism, but ignores the significance of our sociality.
I encourage everyone to actually pay attention to this piece of fiction, because its lessons are what we are lacking in modern society.
Manga was not rushed btw, or at least there is no reason to think so, the family issues thing was some fake bs that came from a Japanese tabloid
@ did some researches, actually yeah it was from some random Japanese gossip magazine or some sort of journal
Individualism is actual strength sociality just makes your pathetic and weak meaning you can't even rely on your own strength.
@ you are partially right, we can't supress person's unique individual traits to follow everyone else, however sharing and supporting each other is one of the reasons why we evolved that far
Pls do a Giyuu analysis next🙏🙏
It'll be a while but he'll get one
Anyone who doesn't have severe brainrot recognizes how incredible the writing is and how it's deep af, but unfortunately that applies to very few terminally online anime fans on social media. Not to mention all the jealousy getting in the way, could never understand such a thing, I will never be so immature as to get mad that some story is doing well and is well liked.
Not sold on that Nezuko theory

The plot isn't complicated or deep
The characters aren't either, because real people don't need to be
Tengen is a well written deep character
@gallenberger1 he's a man with family trauma that's using what he learnt from them and rebelling against those ideals at the same time
It's pretty normal in a lot of young adults
Would you care to explain why it isn’t complicated or deep? Don’t give a nothing burger of a statement
@@TheRizzler-j8c because they're written to be real people, not deep characters with complex motivations or backstories.
Most of them aren't old enough to be, they're child soldiers in an unjust world.
Tanjiro is written to be a big brother, the first born with insecurities after failing to protect his family and had to grab anything to survive mentally.
He didn't choose revenge he chose the hope to save her sister
Nezuko, the monster girl that through love and the help of others endures the bloodthirsty demon trait. It's a classic half monster trope, not to lose humanity.
Sanemi, the big brother that decided to sacrifice his life in a tough job to protect his brother and is mad af Genya is following his steps in said tough job, life risking job.
Zenitsu, inosuke and kanao are orphans allegories. Different types of them.
One desperate for love to form a family, one free without rules and consequences that learns about them trough other people, one with repressed memories and feelings to endure the harsh world
Inosuke is the Tarzan archetype too
The characters are real people based in child soldiers and tragedy, all with 1 or two insecurities, tragic backstory
What I'm saying is, it's easy to understand.
Complexity, not deep, simple, aren't insults bruv
Because again, real people are simple too and this characters feel like real people
Nah they are all very deep, obviously not like real people, no fictional story can do that lol
