Nice shoot out. There isn't a bad pickup among those tried, just different. On my MSA Legend Signature, I have a 710 on E9, and a 10-1 on C6. It's a great combination. The fact that you can just slide pickups in and out is a great facility. I do like the Lawrence 710 better than just about everything else, as it's a great all round pickup. I have them on both necks on my Show Pro. However, on the MSA the 710 sounds slightly better on the C6 neck, as it has a slightly warmer tone.
I’ve always thought I liked the Alumatone sound but whatever you had in there last was the one for me tonight. But in isolation is not the place to judge - it’s how they’re gonna sit in a mix or cut onstage. Being able to switch out is the cat’s ahz.
Love those new guitars. I"m always in the dark (lighted fret boards) love those removable Pick ups,WOW! (learning slowly my Mullen Universal!) Purple is one of my favorite colors. Howe about an orange one?Glad you struck the money tree! (new bus etc.) Merry Christmas! You are a Great Teacher and musician! How about featuring the old Rusty Young runs in Kind Woman when he played with Buffalo Springfield Happy 2018
The first one is the one! You said, it's 710? Which brand is it? By the way, I never saw a steel player as good as you man, you really should be proud of it.
Is this right? If so, did you not include the XR-16 in the description, and then not play the E-66 at all? (my times are generally the same lick for each pickup) 0:58 = 710 2:55 = 705 4:02 = alumitone 4:56 = xr-16 7:02 = 705 8:14 = truetone 9:56 = 10-1
Good stuff Mickey, thanks for sharing....seems like you're a kid in a candy store with all those different options for pick-ups. For me they all sounded really good. But I think the Wallace and the Aluminatone don't have what the others have.....did you miss the E-66 on this video?
I’m rebuilding an old custom 1960’s pedal steel. I’m planning on installing the old single coil along with an alumtone. I’ll add a three way switch and two volume and tone knobs. Is that silly and should I just install the newer quieter Lace?
I'm just an acoustic player wondering how one even approaches this instrument. It seems like there is a steep barrier for those wanting to get into the pedal steel. Since no retailers sell it, what's the first step?
Very informative, thank you for posting. 710 sounded best all around to my ears followed by the 705. Would love to hear these in the E9th neck.
All of those pickups sound great! I really like the rounder, mellower sound of the 10-1 on the C6 neck.

The True Tone is a bit retro without being too retro. Would be a fun sound to work with. But overall the 710 sounds best to me.
Love it !!!!!! That last pick-up was real nice .

BL705,s --I always liked their tone...

Mickey, I have to go with the 710 as my favorite tone. I didn't care for the Alumitone pickup at all. The others were ok.
Listening through my wireless Bose head phones, sounds so rich

(my times are generally the same lick for each pickup)
0:58 = 710
2:55 = 705
4:02 = alumitone
4:56 = xr-16
7:02 = 705
8:14 = truetone
9:56 = 10-1
I wondered about that too?

I liked the first one.
How many pick-ups do have for that beast now? I've been out of the loop for a while. Your intonation is as good as ever bud, thanks.

Wait. Did I see you slide in a pickup? You can do that on your psg?
This was a 100% hey look at what MSA is doing now sales pitch.
Forgive me. I’m new to pedal steel. Which song is that your playing throughout this. I’ve heard this elsewhere but can’t place it.
Nevermind. Night Life. Derp.
705 or 710...... dang you Mickey!!! Lol. Am I gonna have to get 1 of each on my guitar?!?!?!? Lol
