What an amazing build! A true labor of love! Every time I hear the 710’s in a demo, I’m blown away by how balanced the mids are. Trigger finger is getting itchy;)
Thanks Mickey! I learned a lot in this video with a great steel picker like you and a great guitar to test them on. I recall Buddy Emmons saying exactly the same thing you said. He said while he was testing different pickups in different guitars the highs, mids and lows would change but the inherent sound of the guitar was always there. Kinda like EQ'ing a singer on a mixing board. You can make them sizzle or make them boom but it won't change the sound of the singer's voice. I like the 10-1 and 409 with 710 running a close third. Seems like the solid mids of the 710 would be great on a C6th neck. Thanks again!
Beautiful and innovative. I'm new to pedal steel guitars, only been playing about 21/2 months on an 80s MSA- S 10 that I acquired on a guitar trade. Started later in life (69) on an instrument I've wanted to play most of my life. I practice between 5-7 hours a day time permitting and I'm determined to be able to play like this at some point. I've watched many of your videos and find them very helpful so thank you for that. Very hard finding a teacher where I'm from, ( NYC) so these videos are all I have to get some instruction.
Multiple pickups is great for session players! I remember Larry London went through 21 snare drums on a session and ended up playing a box from a dumpster behind the studio! Lol
Oh WOW. That is a beautiful and great sounding instrument, Congratulations on the new "baby" Mickey. Please keep us in the loop with new videos of this sweet sounding thing. Also have a question... Can the LED fretboards be purchased for retrofit on older guitars? If so, I would like to have the info. Thanks for all you do. It is good to see someone with your ability have such a great instrument to play. Thank you for sharing.
Might be a little tough cause I live in MD but thanks for saying so anyway. 👍 The guitar sounds great by the way. I have an old ShoBud I recently acquired & I want to put new pickups in it so your shootout vids were very helpful. I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the 710's.
Nice ax Mickey, ENJOY!!! I liked the 10-1 PU best, highs were cleanest with that one. I got my right ear buzzed with a China Type crash back in the day and brittle highs really tweak me, but that PU wasn't so glassy; you'd hear string rattle on some of the others. One of these days, I'll pull the trigger again. 😉
I am 3 Days into owning this guitar....I find it very hard to walk away from it even after a whole day of practice...Incredible guitar, tone, and workmanship..
I'm impressed!!!!!!!, I built my Double neck (all pull) Ten pedal steel, with under fret lighting set up in 1962(yes-, 56 years ago). Beyond the cosmetics one thing it did that impressed all of the local players at the time was that it suffered NO tuning change when subjected to 25 degrees to 80 degrees of ambient temperature change in at least 6 hours of playing time. Would like to know more about you steel. regards
Where do you find the pickups for the MSA? I have a MIllenium and you're right it's a engineering marvel. Mine came with a George L pickup and I'm not sure what it is. I would like to try some other pickups how they compare. I've used mostly the 705's and I like that sound. Are the pickups made with that base or is that something you can buy and install on a pickup? Thanks in adavance.
Cant wait to get mine!.never thought I'd own an MSA but I'll soon be a proud owner. Mickey do you still prefer the alumitone? I really liked the true tone sound on this video. Also, i.know you've been hitting the c6th more, so do you reccomend the same pi kyp in the back beck or is there another one that will accent the lower range better?
when you replace the pick up seven one ..witch exactly 7 / 1 .......??? Pick Up ...(( very very nice sound ...)) same sound that this Middle Range .. i wait your answer ..thank you very much
From strictly a hassle-free noise-free live gig standpoint, I'd go with any humbucker over a single coil but I'd try to find one that sounded closest to the wide flat bobbin SC if that makes sense. P90 vs PAF in the six string world but I'm too much of a PSG noob to know how to describe the PSG equiv - but I know it when I hear it - the Texas swing 'Bob Wills' console '40's steel guitar sound.
Mickey Adams ...That guitar is a beauty! I always liked the way MSA's were built, but they were so god-awful heavy. I owned four of them over the years, including three white Formica Classics and a green lacquered Vintage XL. I heard that the new MSA's are much lighter while being even more rugged and dependable than ever before. Yours sounds incredible with every pickup you demonstrated. It would be hard for me to choose only one! But until I hit the lotto, my EMCI is going to serve me faithfully until then!
My EMCI with the BL-710 pickups definitely has the tone and guts! Though I'm not a huge fan of the gray finish, the sound she puts out more than makes up for it! Even if I get lucky enough to land a new MSA, I'm still going to hang on to this old girl!
Hiw a out the LED lighed fret.board....I noticed.travis toy has.lights running down his.Myllen fretboard...is. This an afternarket deal Mickey? Boy oh boy, so i go Mullen or MSA when I.upgrade????? Hmmmmm......

Thanks for sharing this wonderful demonstration! I adore this instrument! Good tone quality ‼️

Extremely cool! Besides the LED fretboard lights I also thought the method of connecting the pedalboard onto the legs was awesome!
I like the second pickup as it’s much warmer for those chord phrases!!!

i know EXACTLY what you are talking about...-)
Impressive! A far cry from my first MSA student model. It looks expensive. Does all the pick-ups come with the guitar?
you must buy each I'm afraid..

WOW 😳
SO IMPRESSIVE ....!
Just stop! It just keeps getting better! Take my money! Lol
710 is more aggressive
I could get the hottest gals in Church if I had this Axe!!
Nice guitars, but they cost way too much. Get China or Indonesia to make it cheaply. Telonics pedals also way too expensive.
Put a wound 22 on the 6th string
