  • Principal dancer Marianela Nuñez performs the Myrtha Queen of the Willis Variation in The Royal Ballet's atmospheric production of Giselle. Watch Giselle on demand here: stream.roh.org...
Giselle is the classic ballet of the Romantic era - and, for the dancer performing the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the repertory. Peter Wright’s production, a classic itself, perfectly achieves the dual aspects of the ballet, moving from the naivety of young love between Giselle and Albrecht in the village setting of Act I to the ethereal Wilis in Act II’s eerie moonlit forest. Rich in vivid character detail and poignant depth of feeling, Giselle is a reminder of ballet’s power to move and thrill.

Giselle is my all time favorite ballet! But with Marianela in this role it made me love it even more, and I have a new theory about the Wilis, and especially her Myrtha. I think that the more the ghosts were in love, the greater the loss they felt upon their betrayal, and her love for her betrayer must have been enormous. That’s why her icy fury makes her the Queen. After all, the opposite of love is nothingness, not hate. Hate is the flip side of love, both being emotions of great passion. She hates because she loves. Giselle loved Albrecht, it’s true, but she also recognizes that he did not love her and it was entirely one sided, therefore she can forgive him and herself. Myrtha cannot.

A number of ballerinas I've interviewed who were preparing Myrtha have said she's so IMPLACABLE because Albrecht reminds her of the man who betrayed her. And I've seen Albrecht interpreted multiple ways. If he didn't love Giselle, or at least realize the enormity of the way he was playing with fire, he wouldn't have come to mourn over her grave.

@@minissa2009 I agree. I think that both physical and moral frailty is the overarching theme of the story-Giselle's frailty as a human with her weak heart/weak mind (depending on her cause of death version to version), Hilarion and Albrecht's frailty against the Wilis when they’re forced to dance to exhaustion; Albrecht's misuse of Giselle knowing he has nothing to offer her, Hilarion's selfish exposure of him not caring how Giselle will feel, Giselle going against the life destined for her to pursue Loys despite her mother's wishes (and going against her human frailty by dancing when she is not meant to). He's flawed, but i think he really did love Giselle, he just didn’t think of the consequences of what he was doing.

Thank you for carefully sharing your thoughts here. I find them intriguing. While I do think there is truth in this interpretation of frailty, I wonder if this is really the entire purpose or message of the ballet. Is a masterpiece like "Giselle" really designed only to moralize against the viewer, as if to lecture them about human weakness that is only nimbly overcome by, as in Marie-Ange theory, a dead-end acceptance of a one-sided love?
Well, historically I can imagine that it might be. But, as a work of art, "Giselle" becomes open to taking on more meaning that was intended by the historical author and the original cast(s).
I do think that Marie-Ange is onto something: that Myrtha is Queen because of the intensity of her love and of her sorrow. However, the role of Queen goes beyond that of being the most "powerful" individual. Whether in the realm of mortal or of Willi, the role of Queen is one of service: one who bestows order for the sake of all. She is nowhere known as "Myrtha the Tyrant", because this title would be all too inappropriate to describe her relationship with the Willis, for whom she acts as guardian. More than a hateful witch, she is the Mother of the afterlife, gathering broken-hearted souls who have been lost to tragedy. Rather than hate, this is a role that requires a premium of compassion, which for Myrtha may well have been her own saving grace, rescuing her own heart from the destructive bitterness of a love betrayed. This sort of mood can be observed in the interpretation of Kizzy Matiakis (1:04:14), in this 2016 production of the Royal Danish Ballet (search "Giselle - Royal Danish Ballet 2016" in UA-cam for the full production plus commentary by their director Nikolaj Hübbe).
This interpretation would make a bit more sense, because it helps to explain why Giselle is allowed to act in the way that she does, defying the orders of the Queen (given to protect her wards) out of immense compassion, their shared quality.
I welcome any and all thoughtful considerations. Thank you for reading.

Another dancer that I also really liked as Myrtha was Ekaterina Shipulina and Angelina Vlashinets from the Bolshoi. Angelina's Myrtha expresses the pain in her eyes when she finishes her variation

Marianela is just beyond words. She lives and breathes every movement and it's just so seamless.
An extraordinary talent and one the Royal Ballet and us fans in the UK should treasure having her share her amazing career with us. She is such an asset.

A great Ballerina one of the finest Much more convincing acting than another guest principal whose pulling of funny faces she thinks is acting!!! - You must live the role or you dont convince the Audience Marianela is Myrtha!!!¬ I do hope the Royal ballet sell this as a vid with Yasmin Matthew and Marianela Three excellent dancers in the roles.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the struggles and madness in this world today, God is full of justice, mercy and love.
Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be
destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans
. The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom.
If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us back into that previously perfect image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. He will help us through the struggle, the stress, and anything we experience in the world. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him through His power (not ourselves, we need Him to help us as it's impossible without depending on His power and instruction).
He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if you had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place.
He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it.
He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way.
Christ says in John 16:33: I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.” [My conquest is accomplished, My victory abiding.]
    - (AMPLIFIED version)
NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER. Regardless of what you've done or what you're going through you CAN make it through Jesus.
    Xxx
