Giselle is the classic ballet of the Romantic era - and, for the dancer performing the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the repertory.
Peter Wright’s production, a classic itself, perfectly achieves the dual aspects of the ballet, moving from the naivety of young love between Giselle and Albrecht in the village setting of Act I to the ethereal Wilis in Act II’s eerie moonlit forest. Rich in vivid character detail and poignant depth of feeling, Giselle is a reminder of ballet’s power to move and thrill.

Marianela Nuñez is just toooooooo adorable! She has been doing this for so many years but still being so humble! Responses and reacts so quickly to every single correction and comment despite being so exhausted ! I just love her so much !!! hopefully I could see her live performance one day....
The wave really is too cute! You can see why she's so beloved. Obviously amazingly talented, but just an all round lovely humble person too.
I so hope for you you get to see her live, there's nothing really like it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Ok
It
I'm in US in a city that will never see RB but while traveling in 2019 routed myself through London and really built my trip around having a chance to see Nela dance. I was hoping to get something where she really showed off her bravura technique. Got R&J and OMG could not believe the difference this consummate an artist made to the role of Juliet. Balcony was exquisite. I hope you get to see her live one day. See her in *anything* you can!
She's just such a blessing to the Royal Ballet and the ballet world as a whole.
She's so beautifully talented, but she's so open and receptive to anything that will keep pushing her to improve. She just drinks it in and is so respectful to those who came before.
It's hard to find a talent of this calibre who is also so humble.
We're lucky to have her over here.
Both humility and "talent of this calibre" are rare. ❤
Perfectly stated, Lady Em. Exactly right. 🙏🏾❤️
There's a video of Lopatkina being coached by Makarova floating around YT. I made this exact comment and heard back from one of YT's ballet "influencers" that he'd seen Lopatkina that night after seeing the rehearsal video and that it was a little tense in the studio and Lopatkina had just done exactly what she wanted to do that night in performance and never mind about what Makarova had tried to suggest lols! Nela seems to truly have a beautiful work ethic and really does absorb and enact those corrections. Gotta say Monica's eye is incredible. I never would have seen there were changes to make, but she made Nela's Myrtha...just better.
She's just wonderful in every way, how can a person be this perfect?
@@minissa2009 I've seen the same video, but I did think there was some tension there and I sometimes felt that Ulyana didn't seem to know what exactly what is was Makarova was wanting from her.
Ulyana is one the the very best swan queens, so she must have done OK that night!
There is nothing arrogant or affected about her - she is pure grace and humility. It's such a beautiful attitude, especially in someone with so much talent and skill. One of the greatest ballerinas of all time, in my opinion.
She just so genuinely loves dancing, like she is an incredible actress for roles like this but you can still tell that she has such a passion for what she's doing
Exactly, nice words! So humble and incarnated purely by her craft and art.
(unlike zakharova I can't watch despite talent, because it's too much)
As Monica says, “Lovely my darling, just lovely!”
Marianela is the sweetest person on the planet! From the little wave she gave to the pianist at the start to her beautiful smile you just can’t help but adore her! And her quick transition from this adorable human being to the Queen of the Willis shows how much of an amazing artist she is. ♥️♥️♥️
She is wonderful in each way the most beautiful Ballerina a real Blessings to the Royal and the whole Ballerworld Thanks so much Marinella the Sweetest person til.
But miss Monica Mason didn't see Xander Parish potential she was before the director of the royal ballet
Gotta love that little run when she went to get the twigs!
Agree. I think shes Still the best dancer at the royal and no one has been better for 20 years. Incredible dancer who's face lights up the stage and appears to be the most humble adorable person. We have been blessed to have her at the royal for so long.
i love how positive monica is, many ballet teachers have the habit of giving critic in a negative way which is really demotivating but the positive critics really give you room to grow while being motivated to still try your hardest
I think that the talent of Marianela brings also Monica, and everyone else to being in the best mood!
Haha lidya,
To respond to the person in first comment, you should watch master classes with Monique Loudiere former French étoile which so generous and smart teacher
Monica Mason is the best teacher, the best rehearser, her advice is invaluable and speaks of a great life experience.
She seems very lovely too!
I admire how she behaves herself in rehearsals… considering that she’s sublime and could easily go out on stage without a single rehearsal.
Nela’s little “AH” in the background at the very end, it’s impossible not to love her
i'm just gonna go off here for a sec. marianela is a completely gorgeous dancer. and i don't think people see how hard ballerinas actually work, yk? it takes SO much effort for just this part, and your entire mind has to be set on the moment. i think most people don't treat ballet as a true sport, and it kills me bc we burn just as many calories as one would when running, or working out at the gym, etc. and girls like marianela are working hours upon hours everyday to nail just a single part or technique. i commend all the ballerinas out there for pushing so hard 🥰
Really so true, because its also art people minimise the incredible athleticism or just don't see it at all, which, really, is testament to how incredible classical dancers are.
I agree with the hard work it requires to be a ballerina but as a dancer I wouldnt like it to be seen as a sport. There is a fundamental difference between using technique and phsyical capacity as a means to an end (to express emotions and thoughts), than for the technique to be the end itself. In sports you are rated in an objective way based on what you can do, in art you use you training in towards subjective expression.
Is not a freaking SPORT!
@@anamariaalonso7645 I mean, with some dance competitions, people might consider that sport like
@@anamariaalonso7645 you put this well, BUT, it should be highlighted that it does take an athlete physically to dance it this level. Ballet dancers are athletes. But ballet itself is def. not a sport
the way she moves is so otherworldly and ethereal, but also powerful like the coach said. absolutely incredible work.
Monica Mason is a lovely tutor and once upon a time, great dancer too.
Marienela recently celebrated 25 years with RB. 2023 She's wonderful and her musical understanding is just spot on
I'm gonna save money, go to Great Britain and see it live. I'm not a dancer myself but for some reason when I see them dancing I want to cry
I hope you get to come here, I'm sure you will love it.🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽
Just beautiful aren’t they? That would be my dream as well. What a dream 🩰🩰🩰👵👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
@@gonefishing167 make a determination, start saving, and come over. See you there 👍🏽
that’s my dream too!!! i love roh so much🥺 it is such a privilege to live in london
I hope you realise your dream. It is very special to see a performance at the Royal Opera House and Miss Núñez is fabulous.
Isn’t this a lovely display of total trust in Monica‘s directive and a willingness and readiness to embody the role?
This is a property of intelligence - not everyone is able to understand that his personal potential is not limitless and to develop and move in a union correctly)) the sum of potentials ...N+M=
Monica Mason - legendary. Master class.
So many wonderful nuances! Like it
I’ve watched this several times, always marveling at the beauty of the relationship between these supremely talented individuals, Marianela, Monica and Tim. Pure joy to watch.
This brought tears to my eyes. A reverence to the beauty of gentleness, grace, and poise, life’s virtues. Stunning.
Marianela Nuñes for me is one of the best of Royal ' Ballet ....really perfect
Just so beautiful, she's so talented it makes me want to cry!
Her dance is so lovely, but when she talks and responds to monica, my heart melts. She is so beautiful both when dancing and not dancing
Nela being flawless as always ❤️
best ballerina in the world for sure
Perfect bourees 🥺😍🥰 I adore her. Don’t know who could dislike this. 💕
It's fascinating to see Marianela--she of the radiant smile, whose face so vividly expresses the emotions of the characters she plays, and even the emotional essence of her steps--embody an ice queen without human feelings. Almost creepy, like a zombie twin of the Marianela we all love so much.
ROH’s 2006 Giselle recording is the first time I’ve watched Nela dance. I still go back to that recording from time to time because I simply adore her portrayal of Myrtha so much. But now watching her interpret the same role 15 years later, I am even more amazed by how much she has grown and perfected her art from that already high caliber. Her tempo, interpretation of music and choreography, the way she carries her eyes…. Really shows how much thoughts she has put into the art of ballet!!
Is that the one with Cojacaru and I think Kobborg? Yes, she was an amazing Myrtha even back then. Kind of wish they'd had her dance opposite Osipova in the ballet cinema production in around 2014. I've still never seen anyone other than Martine van Hamel get in *two* promenade/penchees in the first part of Myrtha's choreography, but Nela's single is exquisite. Her musicality is very similar to Martine's. I first encountered her in a fouette video, so I came for the technique but stayed because she is just such a consummate artist, at the top of her game and still taking corrections to improve. Gotta respect that. I think she's the best in the world.
@@minissa2009 Yep, that is indeed the production I was thinking of! And I totally agree with what you said about Nela :))
As a former ballet student, knowing how hard ballet is and how they obsess over every little detail in rehearsals. First modern ballerina I have been truly impressed with. Strong yet graceful and elegant. Effortless movements and hits the steps without falter. I think she will be among the greats.
It never fails, every time I watch Nela dance, it brings me to tears. The joy and passion she exudes is extraordinary.
When I think she can’t get any better, she always does…her jumps are absolutely the best!💕
It's insane, isn't it? How does she do it? Always at the top of her game and just gets better!
She's just flying out there!
IKR? Those grands jetes would have been good for Osipova, who's known in part for her soaring jumps.
Great Marianela! What a fabulous artist you are!
She's so BEAUTIFUL, SMART, SWEET. Always smiling!
Shes just so beautiful and such a talented dancer and inspiration
The first glimpse of Myrthe and the Willis is a magical moment in this beloved ballet!
It's always special when Monica Mason coaches Myrtha, and it's really wonderful to see Marianela in the role. She has such energy and is so musical! I would love to see the full performance of this Giselle, it's sure to be really memorable!
It's hard for Royal Ballet Myrthas to follow Monica Mason's unforgettably powerful and ice-cold Myrtha. I have always thought that as well as power and cruelty, there is also a tragic and vulnerable side to Myrtha and possibly Nunez will be able to show this duality. I hope the RB will post extracts from the forthcoming production of Giselle.
@@elizzy8754 I've been told by dancers preparing Myrtha that one reason she's so hard on Albrecht is he reminds her of the man who betrayed her. So would love to see that interaction! There's an older vid of her as Myrtha with Cojacaru as Giselle that you might find with some creative searching of the internet. Even then, she was a brilliant Myrtha. She used some little tweaks you wouldn't notice unless you knew the ballet well and just totally made the character her own and clearly a role meant for a principal dancer.
As lovely as ever, Marianela!
Nela being coached as Myrtha by Monica. I HAVE NOW DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN!!! Thanks so much for including this as part of WBD. Nela has always seemed like a very complete artist (for my money, she's the best in the world), yet she continues to grow. Amazing! She just soars on those grand jetes! Like some of the tweaks in the choreography but wish Wright had kept the fan turns in that "coda." Just, thank you, thank you, thank you!
I love Nela! Her Myrtha is so cool and signature but her Giselle’s so beautiful too
Agreed
My favorite dancer❤️😍🥰
Marianela Nuñez is my favourite ballerina ever since she danced at Swan Lake. She is so gorgeous💜💜💜💜
It feels soooo good seeing that even Mariannela needs to recive advices, its not perfect at the first try. Be a ballerina its not easy, i personaly feel so bad wen i do something wrong in class, but its normal and we all have to put this in our minds!!
BRAZIL LOVES YOUUU!
She is marvellous.
Oh my goodness Marianela is so sweet ♥️
Such an encouraging teacher!! Marianela is amazing at dancing! Good music
She really is encouraging, but it's not difficult when you're coaching THAT!
@@Emmareads15 true I was thinking to myself how on earth teachers teach professional ballerinas😂 I assumed that there would be almost nothing to correct them on cause they are so good already
Nela’s bourrées are just magnificent. I just love her!!!
Isn't she unique? 😍❤ Love from Argentina Nela! 🇦🇷
A musical box come to life
She floats, amazing
This dancer had an excellent sense of time
TWO LEGENDS. We are so lucky to see them work together.
SHE’S THE BEST
Maravilloso!!! Increíble!! Hermosa poesía expresan tus pies y tu ser Marianela!! Gracias por ser una bailarina dedicada y exquisita!! Orgullo para quienes amamos el ballet! Bravooo!!!
Wow, fancy having instructions from Monica Mason, In my opinion, the best Myrtha ever. This was wonderful, thank you . Thank you also to the pianist. 👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺
Marianela Nunez has such incredible musical phrasing, and, as Monica Mason pointed out, really flying in this rehearsal. Amazing to watch: the technique of Marianela Nunez, and the spot-on suggestions of Monica Mason. Thank you.
Lovely!!!
Watching this took me back to watching televised 'master classes' with Dame Monica Mason (and Sir Peter Wright) on the BBC about 13 years ago. It was these master classes that inspired me to actually book my first tickets to see a live performance; and I have seen over 100 live performances (mainly RB) since then.
I think Dame Monica's crowning achievement, as Director of the RB, was to make, and show that, ballet really is accessible to a wider audience of ordinary people (including myself), and I am so grateful to her for it
That’s when I first became aware of Monica Mason. I’m in awe of her.
so amazing to watch the chemistry between director and the performer
Lovely, perfect, awesome, gorgeous and all the beautiful words in this world for Nela,
I simply love her 💖💖
Beyond perfection
The most perfect Myrtha I've ever seen!!!
So inspiring to see the work behind her stage perfection! Hard to believe she is human sometimes, with not a bobble or step out of place. LOVE Marianela 💗
Every move she makes is so sublime
Essa bailarina é maravilhosa! A melhor ! The best!
Marianela es maravillosa. Transmite tanto cuando baila. Que hermosura 🥰
love nela. and love dame monica! thank you for this!!!
Marianela is a treasure; I'm so excited to see her dance Myrtha!
Thanks. Ballerina Mason. Great privilege watching you coaching. My great good fortune to see you both, great artist, working together. Thanks.
She is absolutely mesmerising! Y el saludo al pianista al principio y la reverencia a Monica Mason al final... Encantadora. Bless them both! If she wanted to dance this role this year, that's totally respectable. But yeah... I'll miss her as Giselle too much... :(
She’s doing both in different performances
Wonderful! Both! Would be so interesting to see more, but I understand of course "The Queen" needs a rest.
que linda bailarina, sente-se a alegria e a simplicidade, e ao mesmo tempo sua sensibilidade e sofisticação💎
As stunning as she is as gesielle,I think she will be an AMAZING Myrtha!!!!
Ballerina Nunez. Bravo! Thanks dear. Such great pleasure watching you in rehearsal of Gisselle. Thanks.
I've watched Marianela through all the years of morning ballet classes and she truly deserved being a Principle. Love rewatching all these rehearsal's it highlights the hard work and dedication that dancer's put in.
Marianela is just so particular in her work and brings such power, the way shes moves is un matched! Te amo
Flawless in Everything
Excellent as always Nela. I have always enjoyed your interpretation of Myrthe. It's so great to see you dance a role so different from your usual likeable heroines. I hope I get to see you and good luck with your shows. ❣🌟🤞🏽

It was such a pleasure to watch this rehearsal with a great teacher, pianist and dancer!! 💕💕💕
Look at her, her grace, her movements, her interpretation of this cheo, everything comes naturally to her.
That was absolutely magical to watch
Марианела одна из самых замечательных балерин современности, необыкновенно талантливая. Милая, очаровательная женщина. Смотрю на её выступления с неизменным восторгом. Доброго ей здоровья и творческих успехов.
Thank you for sharing! Her attitude is really admirable for someone as prestigious as she.
When Monica Mason just repeats "wonderful, great..." and bearly corrects the dancer, it's because the dancer is pure technical and drammatical perfection. Just saying...
Amazing coaching! I just love the nuanaces she touches upon . Amazing dancing too of course!
Et voila une extraordinaire et autentique Prima Ballerina.
Grazie 😘
I love! Humilde, a pesar de su experiencia con buena actitud y respeto por su trabajo. Pasion.!
