A really good start. Good of you to help Shane kick start his allotment. My Godson started an allotment last year, this year I think his neighbours will be well stocked up with fruit n veg. Shane will soon be growing healthy produce. Yes keep us updated.

Hi Alex, really nice of you to help Shane get started. My husband took on an allotment about 3 years ago, it had been totally neglected for ages. It took us about 6 weeks to cut down the knee high weeds, dig out areas (peeps had been dumping their excess soil & weeds there 😠), level the ground, get the basics sorted. He completely rebuilt the big greenhouse with salvaged glass, and used free pallet wood to build tool shed & wood storage behind it plus potting tables. Last year he built raised beds, again using pallet wood & used decking boards, we got good harvest, he’s improved it even more this year and we’re reaping the benefits! We saved old rhubarb & strawberry plants, plus several fruit trees. It’s worth all the effort! PS he got some free old paving stones and uses them between the beds, cuts down on maintenance.

This is such an enjoyable adventure. We don’t have allotments here in Texas but in my 70+ years I’ve always attempted grow something in the hot dry environment. I love seeing all of your "green" growing and am praying for a bountiful harvest from all of both of your hard work. How are the froggies doing?

Here in Michigan, USA, we don’t have allotments. Do you have to purchase or lease the land? The ones that I have seen on UA-cam are always so messy. You and Shane are going to make this one top notch. I hope that we get to see the vegetables that he harvests in the fall. You two have very different skill sets but that’s what makes good fiends and a good team.

You did a great job marking out those beds and spending time to really clean them out. I would love those 20 bags of compost for a birthday gift. I hope he had a couple of drinks to celebrate. There is nothing wrong with low cost. You can always upgrade a few years down the road. Reusable materials are getting to be more the norm. Have a great weekend, and I hope to see another video next week❤❤❤❤❤

Great you bought Shane compost, soil for his birthday. We call that organic garden soil here in the States. Compost is the organic matter we make at home in a compost bin. All in all things are shaping up beautifully. Question…do you pay for your allotment? Your a good friend 👍🏻

I saw a great suggestion for raised beds on Gardener's World - It was to put the turves upside down in the bottom of raised beds- the grass rots and adds vegetable matter and of course the dirt is useful. I would think the beds would have to be higher than these though, as at this depth the grass might just grow again.
You two are doing a fine job. Very relaxing to watch someone else putting in the hard yards, haha.

You have the best environment for growing there. Everything should thrive nicely! Unfortunately here in Pennsylvania my fenced-in veggie garden fed the local fauna. We couldn’t even keep the groundhogs out with large boulders. I finally gave up. Good luck to Shane! Wishing him a great harvest. Just wondering if the wood is pressure treated?

My allotment had these pegs as a marker for where my boundary is. Shame about it being on such a busy road. My last allotment was behind some houses, leading down to our local small river and then fields. It was so quiet! My friend liked to come down and just sit ( and watch me dig)

When I made my raised beds this way, I did all the pilot holes first, then all I had to do was screw them together. It made the job quicker. Your friend will need to rotate his crops of spuds in the large bed but other crops in the 6 smaller ones don’t need to be rotated if you follow the Square Foot Gardening method. ❤

Will the weeds/overgrowth in the adjacent plot be a problem for Shane? Would it be acceptable to trim back a portion, since the plot appears to be untended at the moment? Is the council supposed to maintain the public path, as it appears to need some work as well?

You don’t need to mix the compost into to beds, it will work in when planting the beds and worms will do the rest. I garden on heavy clay and use compost as mulch, the soil quality has gradually improved over the years

Think you’re doing a great job but with all the battery operated tools you have you don’t have a battery operated saw?! I’m assuming that the tall grass is where Shane allotment ends. I like the smooth side out. Why does it have ridges. I saw another British show making a deck and same kind of wood. What do you do with the sod you pulled up? Do you rent these allotments.
