Pinned post for Q&A :)
With which battleship class was there the greatest difference in combat capability at time of commissioning between the lead ship, and the last ship of the class? Is it a more traditional "mechanical" answer, or does it come down to a difference in sensor suite sophistication between one of the fast battleship classes?
When’s the collab with rob from Britishmuzzleloaders
Were there special versions of those guns for lefty-handed people?
Southpaw!
Could you tell us more about diving before the modern era? I've heard on this channel a few times of 19th and early 20th century ships that get wrecked in Shallow Waters being salvaged by divers but I have no idea what that would even look like. The process sounds interesting to me.
Drachinifel before US trip: This is quite agreeable
Drachinifel after US trip: Hell yeah brother
Drachinifel after Canada trip: I'm sorry!
@@TheEDFLegacy LoL!!!
Drachinifel guide to the USS Intrepid and the Yokozuna Bodyslam Challenge when?
I'll say it. Drach is Honorary Yankee now. Go get some bacon and a cholesterol check.
Welcome home brother.
@@jakesully2868 Yeehaw!
This episode felt as though it was about to start with, "Hi, I'm Othias and this is British naval historian Drachinifel. Let's get him over to the light box."
Ya know, now that you mention it I'm a little disappointed that it didn't
Othais is a strong guy, but I'm not sure he could lift Drach from his lap onto the table.
@@catfish552 he could always use a patented plastic pokey...
I was literally thinking just that, with the characteristic grunt.
Love it!
I like how at first you don't even realize he's shooting at a steel target until he finally makes a random hit, but by the time he gets to the Mauser he's ringing steel every shot
🤣 lmao
Oh.. your right... I am reading this. And yes.. I am starting to hear ringing on steel...
I thought he was going for a paper target to get a read on his accuracy...
You did very good though . I forgot you were wrong handed though...
Lol
You want to go and watch some 9 Hole Reviews.
I’m sure he’d be better if we had laws that allowed us to carry, and shoot at virtually anything, in the U.K.
Also his prowess at shooting mines would probably be even worse, bearing in mind that in a ‘Real World Situation’, both the mine and his shooting platform would be bobbing about in a wholly unsynchronised manner! 🥴
I think his microphone was malfunctioning, that's why you couldn't hear the ringing!
Glad to see this collaboration. Two of my preferred channels.
Careful though, Ian and Bloke may grab you for a Brutality match now.
It was great being able to watch you shoot and interact.
Drach is safe as long as he doesn't have any 7.65 French Longue...
A crossover were declared
The number with the C&Rsenal logo down in the lower right corner refers to their episode which covers the weapon on hand. Link to their channel in the video description.
Ah, good to know!
Thank you! Didn't noticed the number 'till your comment.
I was going to mention that until I saw your post. Very enjoyable video, despite the lack of time for the usual studio discussion after. The Patreon car interview is quite revealing on the tightness of Drach, et. al.'s tight schedule!
The fact that the 1911 had a TBD on it undoubtedly caused a great deal of wailing and gnashing of teeth
Thank you for the explanation.
Thank You Othais for helping FINALLY PRONOUNCE this man's channel name.
I will note that while Drach may have liked other pistols better, by the number of hits for rounds fired, he was the best with the Colt Revolver, despite his misgivings about the size of the gun relative to his hand.
The Colt new service is a very large revolver and although similar in size to the S&W 'N' frame the reach from the back of the grip frame to the front of the trigger is much longer on the Colt. This is not a revolver for small hands. Glad you got to play with all these bang bangs in America. You were grinning a lot.
Colt's double action pull always felt nicer to me than S&W's, but keeping the lockwork timed on a Colt is a much harder job for an armorer than on the Smith. That and the fact that the S&Ws were almost uniformly cheaper to procure across the 20th century pretty much told the tale on police and military contracts. Even today it's easier by miles to find, say, a good condition S&W Model 10 than a similar condition Colt Official Police.
I used to work in a gun store, and have done quite a bit with firearms (hunting, pest control, wasting afternoons, etc.) since I grew up in a rural area. I actually very much appreciate seeing people who aren't "gun people" shoot unfamiliar firearms. Especially in a context like this, it gives a very good window into the suitability of a weapon for general issue use or emergency armament of a population (or merchant marine, in this case) in wartime. "Guntubers" are of course a great source of information, but they tend to be so well-practiced with many types of gun that we don't tend to get as accurate of a perspective into things like whether a firearm is intuitive to a new user or manageable under recoil to someone who hasn't spent years shooting everything they could get pointed downrange.
It's part of the reason so many "straight forward" choices may not be as straight forward as people think. Glocks/Hellcats/Other standards don't fit everyone. That's not a problem, it's just a reality.
@@SlavicCelery Or one that comes up here in this video: Not a lot of large frame revolvers fit anything but very large hands well at all, especially for double action. I loved my old N-frame Smith and Wessons, the same frame size as Drach shoots in the video, but I ended up trading them for various K-frame .38s and .357s and a couple of Ruger single actions for the heavier calibers because the double action pull was useless to me, even though, for reference, I can handle a large-frame Glock like a 20 or 21 very well.
My have gun stores changed. Before it was, Brown/wood stock, .22, hunting rifles, 3030s and hunting shotguns and maybe 1 or 2 assault style firearms to now days where 60% are over modded AR styles, 30% are assault shotguns and only 10% are utility guns. Gun stores are toy stores now. Sad.
@@twt000 Yeah, I decided to get out of it when a guy who had just turned old enough to buy his first rifle asked me about an AR by saying, "Is that one of those guns from Call of Duty?"
A video game shouldn't be the frame of reference for what a firearm is to anyone, let alone a grown adult buying his first real weapon.
@@brittgardner2923 Good story to show how times/things have changed for the worst.
Mandatory first firearm has always been a .22 or 410 shotgun and required safety class.
Woo. Been anticipating this, and Othias wouldn't tell us ANYTHING.
Well, he told us he manhandled you on an aircraft carrier, but other than that he wouldn't tell us anything.
After meeting Drach in Canada, I believe Othias. 😅
It is always a treat when two of my favorite UA-cam channels do a collaboration! Enjoyed this very much... Drach is his typical droll English self with his wry sense of humor, Matthias is the consummate host, and Mae's dulcet voice makes the narration such a pleasure! Thank you for posting!
Othias.
Today I learnt that Drach is left handed
Drach's a lefty, who knew ! Well, he's got that in common with Ian (Forgotten Weapons).
If they had more time, they would have had him chucking clay pigeons. 😃
I'm a lefty too and i shoot and cycle the bolt the exact same way
Left handed shooting is surprisingly common among surplus shooters for some reason.
@@sleepyrasta14820 I'm left handed, but shoot right handed.. I can shoot with either hand with about equal ability, but oddly enough I just find right handed shooting better for me..
"Happy British Noises." A must to be added to Drachinifel's best quotes.
C&Rsenal did a great job with Indy Nidell and "The Great War" series too!
That's how I found them.
Drach, you look absolutely delighted doing this. 😂
Also, your colab partners are getting a sub. 😁
Happy British noises. :)
@@anarionelendili8961 Happy Canadian Noises. 😁
Must admit, meeting him face to face, he is no different. 😂
If you enjoy historic firearms and seriously in depth overviews, you'll get weeks worth of enjoyment out of their long-form videos. C&Rsenal (curio and relic)arsenal have amazing content.
They're great. Very detailed historical information. Been subscribed to C& Rsenal since day one. Or maybe week one.
If you're not a C&Rsenal sub you are missing out on a wealth of small arms information.
Ian from Forgotten Weapons is good as well if you prefer shorter pieces of information, Othias and Mae however do hour long videos on C&Rsenal that are history lessons.
Drach,
I’ve also got a Mk.VI Webley with the broad arrows all over. After a certain amount of double action practice (even dry fire works well), it becomes much easier to actually hit your target reliably. This learning curve is very steep compared to a crisp single action trigger like the 1911 so it’s no wonder the double action fell by the wayside and the autoloader took over.
My Mk.VI was "customised" by it's owner (my great-grandfather) during the WWII and it has hair-trigger, short and crisp, because it was used a lot in close combat in North Africa and than in Western Europe. Single action is obviously better but great-grandfather said that he used it only during training, never in action. "If you have your rifle, shoot with your rifle. If Bosch comes too close, stab him in his belly with bayonet. If you lose your rifle, than you pull out your revolver. Some guys preferred knife because it was faster but I was never that strong and agile" he said about that.
A trip to the States without a trip to the range is an incomplete trip to the States. Glad you had a full and rounded, if not hectic trip, Drach.
Now for the French Naval small arms video. I think there's a man very well versed in French small arms who happens to have a fairly popular channel called Forgotten Weapons. I think he could help out with that
Naval….sorry.
@@banjopete fixed thank you
They already did you one better: ua-cam.com/video/keWHqy1VfyY/v-deo.html
I must admit, that's quite a variety Small arms for the naval service. That looks like a really fun trip. Great collaboration. Very informative.
Excellent, Othias has been teasing this so hard
22:15 “Webley Self loader”
Looks as if a P-38 and a Colt 1911 had a baby
I've never seen someone work a bolt action so quickly and gracefully left-handed, a testament to the excellence of the action on that SMLE and the skill of the shooter, great video.
Drach doing that over the top bolt work is actually impressive. And that's coming from a born and bred Texan that's been shooting my whole life.
Great to see some of my favorite military history channels collaborating. And surprisingly honest and insightful opinions for someone without a whole lot of direct experience with firearms. Excellent video!
Wow, Drach is a left hander. Good handling Drach! I'm suffering of the same issue and me fiddling with bolt action rifles usually looks much clumsier. But maybe its because I have a bit of a belly by now and we usually shoot in the prone position here in Switzerland
Amazing that a leftie, a Brit (unused to shooting rifles/pistols, [guns are in the Royal Artillery or on ships], did so well). Kudos to Drach and C@Rsenal
Gun Jesus himself is also a lefty so you're in fine company.
As a lefty who really struggles to handle most boltactions, I agree, very well done.
Ima lefty.
Shoot righthanded. Problem solved
I’m a lefty but I work a bolt with my right hand because all I use it is for hunting so speed isn’t necessarily an issue and it was what was taught to me if time isn’t a problem I would recommend trying it
For a lefty that straight handle action on the arisaka is one of the easiest to operate
I have been waiting for this since C&Rsenal showed a clip of you shooting the Type 30.
After sitting on that tease for so long, it's nice to see the episode.
Also never knew you were left handed until now. I learn something new every day.
When I was 9-10 years old, living in South Alabama, about once a month my stepdad, Billy, would buy a bunch of ammo for all our guns & we would go somewhere out in the woods & target practice. Now I could hit any stationary target with my 22. And something flying through the air with my 12 gauge. But one time our neighbor, a man by the name of Huey King, went with us. He had a bucket of large marbles that were a bit smaller than a golf ball. And if you threw one up in the air for him he would hit it with a 22 rifle. I actually saw him hit the same marble 3x in the same flight, each time knocking it further into the air.
My dad served on a minesweeper in WWII and he was tasked with shooting stray contact mines (they mainly patrolled the Solent).
What he told me was
'All that film stuff where you fired a rifle at a mine...rubbish. We got the Lanchesters out and fired everything we had at it. And we had the bayonet fitted because the barrel climbed like hell'.
Makes sense - small ship is not going to sit still just so you can take careful aim - hose that sucker down.
He was deaf in one ear - I'm assuming that the Lanchester (next to him) probably had something to do with it.
Two of my favourite channels doing a collab? AND we see Drach shoot a bunch of old guns? Sold. Really hope to see more between these two channels.
Two biggest take aways:
1. Drach shoots left handed (I'm also left handed but I learned to shoot right handed)
2. Drach missed the opportunity to have a return of the voice of the mine....
C&Rsenal is by far one of the best firearms history channels out there and one of the few that I willingly and openly fund. I am so happy to see you collab with them.
Regarding the Winchester ejecting upwards in a confined space...I've seen a video where hot brass gets ejected upwards, bounces off something above the shooter and ends up going down his shirt collar. The result was a very entertaining little dance and some impressive swearing :D.
Winchester, it will make you jump up and dance!
I think it is admirable and praiseworthy how kindred souls among the youtube channel hosts so freely collaborate with one another.
It's just another piece of evidence supporting my belief that our sort of people are just fundamentally better human beings than the members of the dinosaur media.
great to see your honest feedback on a gun you just shot for the first time
It's nice he had the time to squeeze this into the hectic schedule he must have had on the trip.
Very happy to see you were able to partake in shooting unavailable to most UK citizens.
P.S. Many of my fellow Americans feel the same about the Lee-Enfield. Myself included as the owner of a No. 4 Mk 2*.
Being Canadian thinking every hunting family has a couple. 303 ,mine being couple P14's. I worked with a British man who last fired a rifle in the suez crisis. I got hin into deer hunting he wanted to start since shooting in England he said was a hassle.
@@vernonfindlay1314 Lucky, I desperately want a P14, there just so damn expensive here in America. I've adored British firearms and I've collected them for since I was 18, I'm now 42 and my collection has grown to include a SMLE No.3, Lee-Enfield No.4, and a No.5 I purchased sporterized but had a new stock made that is military spec along with original hardware. Bloody lefty like my sister, nephew, and Ian? Glad this is the rum ration. Spectacular.
Very many thanks Drachinifel and C&R!
Nice look at something outside of your normal wheelhouse Drac. Thanks for your hard work.
I really enjoyed this! As someone who's been shooting most of his life, it interesting to see someone without a lot of experience, and therefore, bias share what their impressions are.
Glad to see someone else shoot left handed. Working the bolt this way is a pain in the ass
The mad minute
I have one of the British used Remington 14 1/2’s, great fun to shoot. I saw the hitch when you were working the pump. You can’t treat them nice. If you work them slow, they jam, but working them fast and they rock. If anyone happens to know what the D stands for on the rack number, I’m interested in hearing about it.
I (an American gunsmith) am jealous of you Drach as you got the chance to fire a number of firearms that I can only dream of handling.
Really neat colab. Enjoyed every bit of it
WELL,
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!
Two of the best channel's there are.
Only thing missing would be Ian teaching Drach a thing or two about running a bolt action with their shared disability......
A disability I just so happen to share lol
this seemed more to me a video of drach shooting guns rather than explaining why sailors needed small arms . i am not complaining tho
Happy British Noises. Lol
I had the same thought. I'm hoping for a part 2

30-30 lever action rifle is far and away the most fun I’ve ever had with any rifle. So much fun!
Interesting to see left-handed shooting on a bolt-action rifle that's for certain!
I never knew Drach was so sinister :D
Welcome to my life..we just walk to the back yard and target practice. You got a real treat there and i could tell by your giggles. Like myself, you are also a lefty and probably appreciated the lever and pump action.
As an expat Brit with a deep interest in historical firearms, I watch C&R quite a bit. One of the nice things about being over here is I get to shoot historical guns as well and I'm a member of a BPCR club where we shoot metal silhouette animals (chicken, pig turkey and ram) @100,200, 300 and 400 yds using original long arms, some dating back to the late 1800s. Two of mine are Remington rolling blocks, one in 30-30 and the other in 7mm and it was nice to see the rolling block featured in this collaboration between two great channels. I have dropped in on Drachinifel from time to time and will make a point of doing more so and being a bit of a brown noser, I just hit the subscribe button.👍👍👍👍👍
Wow. I love this collaboration.
Freakin sweet. I’m glad you had a great time in the USA
I can’t wait for Mae being a “Cowboy on a boat” with a Lever gun again, this time with Mrs Drach.
Drach is really out there bringing together every channel I'm subscribed to
Oh boy, a match made in heaven.
But... only 40+ minutes? Knowing yours and Othias content I would've expected at least 3 hours...
Gotta say Drach, you ran those bolts well. Glad you got to spread some freedom seeds on your visit.
Drac. I'm so happy you got do a colab with C&R. They are awesome and do such amazing content just like you do. Great work and I'm glad you had fun.

This I what collaboration dreams are made of ! Thank you
Nicely done. Being handed a bunch of unfamiliar firearms, you did well sorting them out. You gotta learn, however, not to wimp out when the hot brass lands on you.( : < ) The marks they leave are tattoos indicating stiff-upper-lipness.
Will there be any "Minute of Drach?" filler segments? On a more serious note - this was an awesome colab. Keep up the great work.
Nice one Drach , C&Rsenal is another of My favourite YT channels along with Yours & Forgotten Weapons ,Anvil , Mark Felton , The Royal Armouries , Bovington Tank Museum and others , so to get a collaboration between two of My favourites was awesome , I have watched both Your episode & C&Rs truly epic . Well done .

Drach, I hope you got a chance to shoot a modern AR pattern rifle and M1 garand from WW2 as well. The differences compared to early 20th century bolt actions are very illustrative.
I would be surprised if he didn't have the chance to try out modern AR and other platforms. Othias seems like the type of man who would have a few lying around, collecting dust under a pile of SMLE and Mosin parts..

The sea mine bit was peak Othais and was fantastic. Whole video was great and I can honestly say I'm filled with envy for you getting to manhandle all those fun pieces.
Best compliment
Mrs. Drach was correct. The brass ejection is a Thing for Drach.
A Winchester lever rifle, like the 92 you shot here is not "handed"; i.e. it will shoot just as comfortably left handed as right. This is also why JMB designed it with straight-up and back cartridge ejection. The most efficient way to cycle the action is with your 2nd, ring, and pinkie fingers inside the loop. With this arrangement you can cycle a spent shell and reload with a flick of the wrist. It is very natural and it takes very little practice to get off an aimed shot every 2-3 seconds.
I had no clue about the Winchester 1892 being in the Zeebrugge raid, I completely didn't realise that it was of course Royal Marines fighting their. If they make a film I hope someone has a Winchester 1892 in it. Wonder what other seemingly out of place rifles the royal marines were using in the raid, maybe a couple of the mausers that would be slightly ironic.
In these days and age they'll use a broomstick, and the appropriate rifle model will be added in post production.
There is a couple of accounts by people who served in that raid, reeling off a list of weapons they had offered to them or were packing for the fight. Things like clubs/trench Knives, revolvers, and either a Winchester or Enfield long arm that they could take their pick of (and it seems at least one took all of them!)
In the Connery film "Wind and the Lion" the US marines use a Colt potatoe digger.
@@rogersmith7396 The USN and USMC had the M1895 in 6mm Lee and the M1914 in 30-06 Springfield

Haven't even watched this yet and it's already my favorite drach video ever
Finally, O teased this to us so long ago but said nothing. Glad to see you had fun Drach.
super cool vid sir - very glad you got the opportunity to use all those historical pieces, (hope your hand and shoulder don't hurt too bad!)
And now for something completely different....
Great video on a little known subject 👍

Outstanding. Thanks for all you do!
C&R + Drach well my day has been made complete, also Drach has surprisingly good form with a rifle
Awesome video! C&Rsenal sure does have a lot of those odd ball guns that you don't get to see often! Now think about how much more fun that is to aim when the deck is rolling! I am looking forward to the next video! Something tells me it will be a lot more lead and hot brass flying!
I would have thought the Webley Fosbery would have been useful for sea service, after all there wasn't really the risk of mud or sand buggering up the mechanism.
Amazing collab, two of my fave channels!
