- Greetings California Roots Family! Here is the their entire set of Nahko & Medicine For The People performing at the 5th annual California Roots Music & Arts Festival in Monterey in May of 2014. This was one of the highest energy sets of the entire weekend and commented on as a favorite performance of many. If you haven't heard of Nahko before, your in for a treat. Oregon-native Nahko, born a mix of Apache, Puerto Rican, and Filipino cultures and adopted into an American family, suffered an identity crisis from an early age. But the unifying power of music entered his life as a healing remedy, when he took up the piano at age six. Armed with his newfound talent, he set out to bridge the cultural gaps dividing his own psyche and began producing a public, musical journal of his journey toward personal, spiritual, and communal healing.
From his hometown of Portland to the shores of Hawaii or Bali, wherever he has traveled, Nahko is joined by a tribe of culturally alienated truth seekers for whom Nahko's story resonates with their own, and who find redemption in his voice, guitar, flute, and drum. Whether solo or with the dynamic group of musical troubadours known as "Medicine for the People," Nahko delivers a soulful dose of curative vibrations that moves audiences to dance, laugh, and cry. His 'spirited redemption music' lays bear the scars of cultural wounds, environmental wrongs, and social injustices. His lyrics bear the burden of heavy messages, but the load is lightened by agile melodies and driving rhythms that coerce all who bear witness into spirited, purifying, movement. His humor disarms, and his lyrical stories open listeners to the power of "Real Talk Music"-songs that reveal an honesty and depth so raw, it inspires an internal revival that echoes out into the world. As always, simply breathtaking and amazing! Going to Boston to see him in a week and I'm so excited! Finally, a great musician who is still alive and with a positive message. It truly is medicine. It's nice to know there is others out there on a similar path! When you're from a rural area it can be harder to make connections. I haven't been this obsessed with a musician since I was 14

Wow! This is just blowing my mind! I've never heard these guys before, was listening to some live Michael Franti(🤘) when it finished the auto-play played this, & wow! Truly awesome live show. Each & every song is like listening to an old favorite, it just resonates right in my soul. And such a great message he's getting across. I know I'd find it very hard to be of Native descent without being very angry & bitter for al that befell his people. But he seems to have embraced all Man, spreading the word of love & peace, & the restoration of our Mother Earth. Philosophies I've heartily embraced for many years, since I let go of my hatred of humankind for all atrocities dealt Natives globally & the horrors we have dealt to Mother Earth. Now I just embrace the peopie who feel the same, try to open the eyes of the ignorant, & do what I can for the Mother.

I finally understood that after 41:02 another song kicks in connecting with On the Verge: We shall overcome! Strangely I do not see any good records of this song. But this version is I must say an epic one. I think people there at this Caliroots '14 witnessed a performance that all humanity is affected. It is an epic history sung there!
Yeah, it took me a few listens to figure that out - best part of the show.
I agree that it is the best part of the show and I couldn't believe the version on the album. I tried to convince myself that Nahko has some sort of sense in converting these epic lyrics into the genre in the album but in my opinion this tirade-like version is just unbelievable and here he simply shouts to the world what a great poet he is.
Get to see these guys and trevor hall in Australia next month. so excited!

Any Nahko 2017 full set posted on UA-cam was done illegally without our or the artist’ consent. We do continue to work with artist throughout the year to release live footage. All videos must be approved by the artist before we release it. We will be sharing more soon.
