You are right! I am so used to using "negative" in describing original film elements that I didn't even realize it. The reversal stock, much like Romero's Martin which was also shot on 16mm reversal, is why the elements are "baked in". I'm going to pin your comment because I do want this aspect to be correct for the point I was trying to make in the video. Thank you!
I went nuts and bought both Dark Sky versions and the Second Sight edition. It’s my second favorite horror film of all time and in my mind that justifies it. I remember fondly of the day my Wizard Video VHS of Chainsaw arrived. And I still have it to this day.
I got my steelbook today (went with the original cover also) and can't wait to watch it. I am intrigued by your feedback. Your knowledge helps me watch with a more trained eye. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much Adam! My issues are minor but I did want to mention them but overall this is a really great release. I think you'll be happy with it.
I watched this yesterday and i must say that I'm pleasantly surprised how darn good that transfer is. Yes, there is problems in some brighter scenes , but dark scenes are full of details and colors are very good. Also that soundtrack is just as nerve wrecking as it's designed to be! It's no wonder this movie practically started my movie hobby over 30 years ago! Masterpiece!
Fascinating explanations bro! I’ll admit, all of that clipping stuff goes over my head most times, but you explained it very well! Still need to dive into my copy this weekend!
Great Review…I also got that beautiful Steel Book. Can’t wait to watch it tomorrow night. I’m a big second sight fan, but had to go with this release for the Original artwork.
I will be watching this release this Friday, and hopefully, I can look past some of these issues. I can't wait till my Second Sight release comes in because I bet you they nailed it. They are meticulous in their quality is second to none
I am curious to see how the Second Sight release is since they really go out of their way for their releases. Their Dawn set is still one of my all time favorites. And my qualms with this one are minor. I actually edited out a part where I talked about working with video years ago where that type of clipping can happen with improper exposures and it always bothered me so I think I'm more sensitive to that look. I decide to cut it out since the video was long enough already. lol
Hi from Canada, Richard! I did enjoy this version and your thoughts. I'm curious what you think of new Second Sight "documentary" included on the BluRay. I found it disappointing and loooong for what it was.
Great, informative video. I don't know what else you could add for a review, this covered everything pretty well. From the sounds of this I might wait for a sale or maybe just stick with my iTunes 4K version. Maybe the SS version will be better, I think I'll just wait and watch your video.
Another very tempting Steelbook I have the other older Blu-ray Steelbook but I will eventually take the 4K plunge on chainsaw. I was under the impression they would have some amazing 50th anniversary release seeing how it’s only about a year away hope hope 🤞🙏 I’m also hoping there’s a really cool 50th anniversary release of The Exorcist this year as well. And I’m definitely excited for the new film that will be coming.
I ordered this 2 months ago on pre-order before it sells out and is ridiculous money on ebay... Here in the UK it's on 2nd sight with the red and white 2 tone cover.. I'm patiently waiting till its released next month here... I watched it again a while ago and appreciated it even more for the masterpiece it is and is one of my fav horrors... wife hates it though..😅 Managed to get the very rare uk london quad poster on linen after I lost out on the rockin jelly bean mondo.. Cannot wait to hear your review and mega excited to see this again.. Great work Richard all the best from the uk 🇬🇧
Very good review of the original TCM movie Richard. I'll be getting my own copy in a few weeks I think I'll enjoy it very much I love the movie. I don't usually look at how the film looks like as long as it's pleasing to my eyes and the picture quality is good that's all I care about.👍👍🆒🆒😈😈
Thank you SK! These are not major issues but I wanted to mention them. I think most people won't even notice them. I'm more sensitive to clipping having worked with video for so many years. It bothers me especially when I used to see it in my own work from years ago. lol
Currently waiting for the Second Sight version instead since they announced they’re fixing the original Mono track which goes out of synch near the end. Bought it along with 4K Martin and the 4K steelbook of The Man Who Fell To Earth. Going region free is sure is amazing and not worrisome haha
The film has always had that grainy look since the first time I saw it on VHS, so I don't know how much you can improve on that in 4K. I think I'll wait for the Second Sight release, I mean they have a good track record when it comes to 4K transfers.
The only thing I didn't like is that it doesn't include the movie on Blu-Ray. I'm used to the Blu-Rays included with the 4Ks. All of the 4Ks I have include the Blu-Ray and yes I do watch them. I think I'll buy it anyway. Good descriptions and cool video Richard!👉😃👈
Hector... interesting you mention this as here in UK I pre-ordered the 2nd sight 4k special edition which has 3 discs... film on 4k and bluray and extras bluray with ton of cards etc.. That sucks you didn't get the 1080blu too as these special editions are pricey.. it was 60quid here but I paid £45 so about 55 to 60usd...
@@christophercharles3426 most of the times these cult horror movies are released in the USA in multi-disc box sets which makes them expensive. So it's odd TCM was released with on just a 4K and a Blu-Ray for the extras only. Sometimes we're lucky but once in a while not so much.😜
40 dollars and can't even put an image on the back? These companies are becoming such ass! Over-priced packaging, bullshit on the inside of Scream Factory cases, boutique labels not adding reversible art when they normally do but still charge premium prices. These companies are becoming such jokes. Im glad for people like you because I can see what your getting before investing that kind of money for over-priced media.
Thank you Patrick! I wish there was something on the back of the steelbook. I love the front a ton. The inside image is great. Even if the back had something simple I'd just feel better about it.
It Was A Great Transfer.....For It To Be That Old!! I Have An A90J Sony Bravia TV, Which Means I Have Dolby Vision In It...,And The Film On It Looks Great!!
To my eye, not a great amount of difference between the Dark Sky 4K and the Dark Sky Blu-Ray release of this film, they practically look the same, with the 4K having the slightest edge in overall picture sharpness, but hell, this was filmed in 16mm and then blown up, so there will always be that graininess. Still, a definite step-up from the Dark Sky DVD release, as well as an MPI DVD release that I own. Overall, this is probably the definitive version of this film. Haven’t seen the Second Sight 4K release, but I’m not expecting anything to wow me at this point.
A few "film" nerds in the comments. Y'all have to understand the source material is everything and the further you get from the negative the less you're going to get. Have to keep in mind everyone's system is different so reviews on colors or black levels are subjective. Friday the 13th looked beautiful to me so not sure what anyone was talking about. Blu rays have loads of noticeable clipping/compression compared to even the worse 4ks. Seem to notice these "bad" 4ks looks great on my system so maybe you should check your settings.
This film will always be a grainy film. 16mm reversible stock (not negative like I said in the video) is one that is filled with grain. You don't want to apply noise reduction to it or you lose any detail from the film itself and it becomes almost like a wax covered mess. The grain also helps give this film that "rough" look which I think helps with the overall feel of the film.
I bought a remastered blu of this a few years back (can’t remember the exact release) but ended up selling it as it was just too grainy for me to enjoy. I’ve still got another blu which is pretty damn good anyway. Have ordered the second sight so fingers crossed it’s not crazy grain 🤞
Richard, I always thought The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was shot on color reversal film stock and not negative stock. So it was shot on negative stock?
You are right! I am so used to using "negative" in describing original film elements that I didn't even realize it. Thank you for the detailed description of the image quality in this transfer, great work as always!
Very cool. Many thanks Richard for the detail on the release.
I went with the steelbook just for the poster.
While I wish there was something on the back of the steelbook I just so love the look of it on the front with the poster artwork. Just gorgeous.
Someone needs to release a box set of all of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre movies . Old and new
Thanks Richard! Definitely interested in a comparison video between this transfer and the Second Sight version!
Nice review. Please review the Second Site release when it comes out if you're able to

Simply one of the most important movies ever made. I have a chunk of the road from the end, albeit not from the road as it was back then.
Thank you for the heads up! I opted out for the second sight but love that steelbook! Did they ever go back and fix that f13th 4k?
Great review looking forward to getting this one. It's my favorite horror movie.
I went with the Second Sight release and already own the Turbine release.
Great review, man!

Did you happen to give your impressions on the Second Sight UHD? If you have, maybe I missed it?

Does the normal edition have the mini poster?
Nope, only the steelbook includes the poster.
I must admit I do not know. Hopefully others here who have the standard release can help.

I love the slipcover but really rather have a steelbook. But will get the slipcover edition.

Was it scream factory that offered slim pickings with a high price for the 4khdr release of 2013s remake of evil dead...??

Classic, watch it in the dark. 74 I think
Honestly, I'll probably just stick with the blu ray. I feel like that kind of stuff would bother me. Thank you for saving me a little cash. 😆
I bought this release only for the original artwork! I know second sight will most likely have better transfer, but i don't like their artwork at all.

Compression? That doesn't sound good!
A lot of grain . I don't mind some grain but this had a lot.
Also take into consideration that Texas chainsaw massacre movie is 50 years old never going to be prefect.
Transfer is pure trash too much grain.. Very disappointing.

I agree! Way too much grain.
Fun fact the second sight hdr version is not approved by the director unlike the dark sky version
Got mine today @RichardDiaz.
