Mouth Mantra is one of the songs that I stands out the most from Vulnicura (2015), an album that has 8 songs, where 6 of them explicitly deal with the singer's 13-year marriage breakdown, however, a couple deal with things apart, but not completely detaching himself from the central theme, one of them is Mouth Mantra, which addresses Björk's connection and singing, more crudely with her throat and vocal cords during the period in which the singer decides to treat some nodules on her vocal cords with laser surgery , after trying to cure the problem with natural therapies. This surgical procedure forces the artist to spend a long period without being able to speak or even sing, a time in which apparently she also lives the breakup affair and begins to write about heartbreak, figuratively presenting a double wound in the song.
Regarding the composition, it is poor in lyrics and probably also in arrangements, but it transmits a lot. I really like listening to the version of the album with headphones and with my eyes closed, feeling like I'm on a high-speed trip. I take all three parts: vocals, string arrangements and electronics. The voice tells the story, the string arrangements represent the vocal cords, as if they were long strings that travel through a tunnel that is the throat, the electronic arrangements play with a musical sway, in fact they are sometimes heard in the mix nearby and others are further away, which makes me take them as the nodules or possible obstacles through this sonic tunnel. Finally it is possible to leave the tunnel, starting the predominant strings and the electronic arrangements fall, as if they had been defeated.
I rescued this presentation in 2015 after being deleted from UA-cam by Björk's label, because it was among the recordings that could possibly be used in "Vulnicura live" (Yes, this presentation is recorded like same "all Is full of love", which it was the only time he sang it on the tour that started in 2015).
I like this one live, because the electronic arrangement is the same as the studio album (later he changed it to haxan cloak in later live performances), it is one of the first times that she sings this song live, it is without the masks and the stage is not pretentious, as is the album.
Vulnicura, an album that, in my opinion, had a surprisingly good reception from the critics and the public, I would even dare to say that for 11 years it had not positioned itself in the rankings as well as it did with this album. The album in general had a lot of potential for touring and more, apart from Vulnicura VR and Remixes, but clearly due to the high personal content of it, Björk decides to turn the page and dive into a new album.
Before good video clips, designers who want to dress her up and masks, there is the music and before the music, there is the person and that is what I will always rescue from her professional career, she has always done what she wants, without to infringe someone or herself, a person with high personal ethics.

I still can't believe the strings on this track, especially the rhythm of the strings and of the voice constantly chasing each other. This reminds me of a high speed car chase. I sing this, and it takes a lot of focus.

Mouth mantra is not angry to me, it’s more tenacious, triumphant, and tactile. She’s getting it back, not breaking it down
