Does anyone get excited when they see a new Adorama video up and ready to view? I just love how well these are put together for us to learn from. Thank you Gavin!!
Phew, for a moment there I was worried Gavin wasn't going to mention his "small home studio". As usual, an informative and entertaining video from the legendary GH.
Thank you Gavin, Jess and Sam! Always look forward to your informative videos. I must inform you that I nearly choked on my morning cup of coffee when you modeled the jacket. Thank God the tassels were on the sleeves. Cheers to you all!
I always get that WOW feeling when Gavin posts a new video.. You have been a great insperation to me and so many others, i'm sure. Great video, again. I struggle a bit with drag and pop. will have to try again. Thanks to you, Sam and Jess.
There are some good photography teachers out there, but Gavin, you are the top. Loved the way you explained the rationale for each lighting change here. You always left me thinking, "Of course! Any fool can see that!" Only if you had asked me beforehand, there would have been a long silence. And if there's one thing I've learned from your videos that applies to every shoot, it's "Experiment!"
What a great video Gavin! As always I love how you show the steps and the "wrong" ways that don't give the result you want and what you do to change that. I. E. Rear curtain synch. Great work by Jess too. Love the hair and a great smile! And I have to agree about the tassles Gavin! Look great... Not so much on you though Gavin 😂. Simple and to the point, and kept my interest all the way through. Top job,, thank you 😊
Thanks Gavin and Sam, I've not commented before but have learnt so much and been so inspired by watching your videos for a number of years. Rocking that jacket by the way Gav!!!! 😂
Have a shoot scheduled to do this very thing with rugby team doing dives and run and tackles etc, after whatever lockdown we are on now ... love a bit of rear curtain flash....great video Gav as always
Hmmmmm...you've really given me something to think about. Now I'm wondering just which thrift shop will have a tasseled jacket I can buy! Thanks, Gavin--as always, very educational and easy to understand!
whooooooooooooooooooooooow!!! very nice!!! Excuse me, could you tell me the name of the monitor you use to see the photos, or provide me with the link please
To use rear curtain flash, do you set your flash or your camera or both to rear curtain? You said in the video that you set your camera, but didn't mention if you changed your flash settings as well. thanks!
Hiya Gav! Great video as always! Given me a great idea for a shoot (when it’s finally safe again here in Kent!). How would you do this mixing ambient light? Because obviously once I match exposures for my flash and ambient, if I start to slow shutter speed, my ambient will become brighter. I don’t use TTL so will it simply be a case of ND filters to stop it down?
tthanks Gavin, another great idea to pass time in the studio! but could you tell us where in the menu at the OM-D E1 I can switch to rear curtain flash?
Awesome as always Sir Gavin Hoey.. Greetings from Chowdry Photography, Bangalore, India.. I would love to watch a video tutorial on shooting Fitness, Athletic portraits especially focusing on the Physique of a body builder like ABS, Biceps,, Chest Triceps,, etc... Would greatly appreciate your help and support Sir Gavin..
hi Gavin , can you help me with my choice , I hesitate to buy the AD400 Pro or the AD600 Pro, along a kit that includes 2 AD200 Pro , I begin in the kind of photography ,can you tell me which one will be better, I will make photo in my small home studio too ( my living room ) lol, and also this summer outside, for portait in bright light situation also in sunset, to overpower the sun( HSS) is the 4000 will be ok or just in case take the 600 thank in advance
Gav answered my question before I thought to look/ask for the answer. When does the flash fire when the shutter speed is long. BRB i got to check out my camera options.
This same concept can be used while photographing wedding receptions if you use ocf to light them. You can mess around with twisting / shaking the camera.
Is it possible to achieve a food or some small particles like spices or dry fruits falling from top and get all those freeze with sharp images. I have 6D mark ii and shutter speed is limited to 1/4000 and not beyond that. But I do have AD400 pro.
I'm a budding wedding photographer. How could I achieve similar results as those in cocktail hour while the guests are dancing??? Would it work with on camera flash???
I love this. I love how you break this up into steps. I do have a question for you. Can you think of a situation in movement where the first curtain sync would work?
Gavin, save the jacket for the model{s} - trust me, its not a good look on you ;-) Super walk through as to how to build the shots. Great images and thanks to Jess, as well. Now, if only there was some smoke or sparklers ... ... maybe once lockdown over and we can photograph in bigger spaces
Due to the ambient light and a need to blur the subject, a slow shutter speed would typically be used. And when we use a slow shutter speed, the aperture would be closed down a fair bit. So DOF should be adequate.
I tried using rear curtain sync and off camera flash fired optically. Even though the flash was set to Manual, it fired twice. I would have expected a pre-flash in iTTL but not Manual. Without a radio trigger or cable, must I use on camera flash instead?
Does anyone get excited when they see a new Adorama video up and ready to view? I just love how well these are put together for us to learn from. Thank you Gavin!!
I definitely do!!!
For sure!
Gavin is my superstar in the series of Adorma videos :)
Gavin in my opinion is the Yoda of photography!
It's a new video from Gavin Hoey.....today is a good day 😊👍
Gavin you are a legend, all your videos are short and full of information, always a pleasure to watch them.
The rear curtain sync was a HUGE TIP!! Thanks!! :)
Phew, for a moment there I was worried Gavin wasn't going to mention his "small home studio". As usual, an informative and entertaining video from the legendary GH.
So much respect for Gavin. Truly a legend.

Super video, Gavin you are always an inspiration.
Thank you Gavin, Jess and Sam! Always look forward to your informative videos. I must inform you that I nearly choked on my morning cup of coffee when you modeled the jacket. Thank God the tassels were on the sleeves. Cheers to you all!
I had to think for a moment about your tassel comment Booth but you're right... Sleeves are probably the best place 😲

Excellent demo of the various elements, and great results, Gavin. And of course, fun, too. Thank you!

Grab work as always.

Grazie Gavin
Great video Gavin
Thanks Kirsty... works with Speedlights too 😉
@@GavinHoey I will try that at some point
Another great video Gavin, can this be done hand held ? Or with the slow SS does it have to be on a tripod ?
Keep the jacket. I dare you. 😜 Brilliant video.
lolol he's already funny but that jacket added to it big time.
Can you pls share something about the screen which was used for tethering? Dont think its a laptop or anything... Thanks,
Thanks Gavin was wondering what the screen is you are tethered to

Great job on the video. I can’t wait to experiment with that. Bad job modeling the jacket.... sorry lol.
Gavin Hoey, yet another awesome video. I have a profoto B1 light. What should be my light setting to freeze motion?
It would indeed. Keep the power LOW and you're good to go!
@@GavinHoey thanks a lot
tthanks Gavin, another great idea to pass time in the studio! but could you tell us where in the menu at the OM-D E1 I can switch to rear curtain flash?

With today's image stabilizing lenses, should the IS be turned off when using flash with shutter speeds at or below the camera's synch speed?
Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat
Great lesson. I'm ready to shoot!

Gav answered my question before I thought to look/ask for the answer. When does the flash fire when the shutter speed is long. BRB i got to check out my camera options.
If rear curtain sync is enabled, the flash will fire at the end of the exposure time (just before the shutter closes.)
Who wore it best? Gavin you should wear the jacket every video!
Gavin looks like a rockstar in this jacket
All the looks, none of the talent 😉
@@GavinHoey who said rock stars have talent ?
@@GavinHoey But a very talented photographer and teacher !
This same concept can be used while photographing wedding receptions if you use ocf to light them. You can mess around with twisting / shaking the camera.
How strange...I was doing this exact same thing last night with an RGB strobe light as the constant light.Took a while to dial in but lots of fun!
👏👏👏👏 Antonino Italy

Hmmm, good question Patty. I'm sure I could given enough time but if it's long exposures AND flash then usually my brain defaults to 2nd curtain sync.
Long exposure and smoke... that sounds like a great idea for another video. Thanks for the idea Alan and the fashion advice 👍
Hi! Why do you have to maintain the power of the flash at a low level to froze the image??
Dear Gavin. Kindly show brief editing of same picture at the end as you use to show before.
How do you focus on the subject during this process?
How do we get sharp images at f2.8 when DOF is very shallow, especially when model is moving as in this video?
Due to the ambient light and a need to blur the subject, a slow shutter speed would typically be used. And when we use a slow shutter speed, the aperture would be closed down a fair bit. So DOF should be adequate.
Is there a practical reason to synch on the first curtain?
I tried using rear curtain sync and off camera flash fired optically. Even though the flash was set to Manual, it fired twice. I would have expected a pre-flash in iTTL but not Manual. Without a radio trigger or cable, must I use on camera flash instead?
sounds like an issue with your flash unit. have you tried covering up the optical sensor with a piece of tape?
when i drag the shutter the subject gets very blurry. The only way I can catch the subject moving is with a shutter speed of minimum 250
Could you show us how to do blur shots with sharpness with no flash?
Keep it, Gavin, keep it!!!
Please wear this jacket for your next videos ! :-)
