Easy explanation for something that seemed intimidating, thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this and for all you do to help photographers. We appreciate you!
Thanks Dan! I appreciate that!
Wow that are some super inspiring photos. I don’t know this technics before so thank you so much for sharing this in a great video ❤️
Thank you for sharing that information, that is truly wonderful
Thank you for this video!!! I saw these on Instagram a few years ago and instantly became a fan. I immediately recognized the rear curtain technique. We use it when shooting dance floors shots at weddings so that the motion looks natural. I wasn’t sure what your constant light source was, but modeling lamps make the most sense. Thank you as well for the color wheel idea!
You're welcome!
Cool technique! Thank you for the video.
Great tutorial James, ty so much!
Awesome tutorial!! Thanks
Going to try Sunday. Thanks bro. Great work!
Have fun!
I love it! Nice to see you back 👍🙂✌️
Thanks! 😃
Awesome video !!
WHEW!!!!! He's back! Love it.
Whew! Is right!! 🤣
Great content
Really wonderful video. Thanks for the tutorial!
You're very welcome!
dude - you are just awesome. Its how I want to learn - easy to watch....just 100% awesome.
I appreciate that!
Cool video. It gives me ideas for a shoot with a rock band that I've coming up!
Thanks for another great video
Thanks for watching!
Exceptional video! And I have seen quite a few. Thanks for the tips, I discovered your Chanel today so I will take a look, I hope everything goes well with you!
Awesome, thank you!
Love it!!!
Thanks!
Going to try this tomorrow
I hope it worked!!
Love this
Thank you Sir!
So good!
Thanks Thomas!
Thank you !
You're welcome!
Amazing.
Thank you Ulisses!
I think your sport photo style is gorgeous (and I don't talk only about ones in this video).
Thank you!
@quantzphoto thank you very much for this. I do have a question. I have been trying to do this outside with a speed flash both on and off camera and trying to pan at the same time. I have not had any luck of any kind. I am using a sony a7iv. Can you tell me where you are pointing or setting up your shot? Are you following him or looking at where he is landing? Thanks again for your videos it gives me new options to try and this is one have been trying and failing.
Thanks so much for sharing James! I plan to incorporate this method for some projects I am working on for a client.
Good luck Jimmy!
Loved this mate. Its been a while ;~) James do the rear lights need to be constant or can I use strobes ? On another note I totally understand the busy life. Balance is hard mate. Getting better as I get older though. Should be perfect at it when I'm about 80 🤞😂
I was just using the modeling lights on my strobes. You could use any kind of colored light source but make sure you also gel your strobe so it doesn't wash out with the (colorless) flash!
Thank you for sharing, will give it a try. What White Balance do you use?
Usually set to daylight but it depends on what I'm trying to do.
Are you in Columbia? I lived in Ft Mill for a long time. just moved back to NC..Thanks for the videos.. keep it up.
What laptop would you suggest for beginners/novice 🤔
James, thanks for your video. A quick question - as I've just purchased my first strobe (yes, only have one). As you point out, it's going to be dark. So even if moving side to side - and perhaps having a mark on the floor for a dancer or athelete to end close to, how do you ensure close enough focus using rear curtain sync. I could see how using front curtain you could focus first, but would just like to understand the process of focus using RCS first. BTW: focal length and f/stop used? I would imaging you're using around 50-70mm and f/7.1? Thank you in advance.
Thanks for another great video James. I guess the black backdrop is almost mandatory is it? Thinking about trying this with youth hockey players on the ice in an arena. We’ll see how it goes.
A dark arena would work as well...
I am struggling to get my rear curtain sync to work. I have a canon R6 with a prophoto trigger and prophoto lights- I am setting my trigger to 2nd sync but my curtain is still functioning as a 1st curtain. Any suggestions?
I have tried RCS with my R6 and FJ400 strobes without success. The Westcott trigger.does not seem to work. I can use my Canon flashes to get RCS since the control for rear curtain sync is bulilt into the remote trigger and Canon flashes. I enjoy your content and wish you the best.
Does Rear Curtain Sync work in bulb mode with a manual trigger....?
Thank for the video! Which is the name of those dolly arm that you use for the softbox? Thank you
I just added it to the description!
I was doing some stuff like this with fire back in the film days with Medium format cameras. try this is you want. Take a basketball or football and deflate it some - maybe 30% but so it still has shape. Find some old aqua net hair spray from aerosol can. have subject hold ball to right or left of body so no one gets burned. use long lighter and remote for camera to light up ball. Fire shoots up and lights subject then under exposed flash. Just like what you are getting here but orange. Requires explanation to subject and showing what will happen and safety protocol about dropping into bucket after 3 seconds. Also as ball gets hot it expands air inside so that is why under inflated. I won many award and made lots of money with fire sports. I have never tried it with digital
That sounds next level! 😱🔥
Also you can go to local pharmacy and get small bottle of Glycerin - this beads up on skin really well and will not run like real sweat. Mix with some water 1-1 if you want extra to act as a spray. Add 10% milk to show up on camera better. Spray fine mist over subject and you will see beads of sweat making them look extra mean. And if you get extra on them it will fly off and look neat when caught by flashes. All rain you see in Hollywood used to have a bit of milk in in to show up on camera better. But that is old school. Still it works. Also I tell guys to do 20 push ups to get a pump on, they feel stronger during shoot and then if I tweet their muscles just a tad in PS, they think it was natural and I am the greatest photog they have ever met. LOL it works
I bought two color wheels like a month ago and they go where my camera goes. Much handier than trying to remember the color wheel in my head. lol
Exactly!! 🤣
Which Parabolic Umbrella do you use, the deep dish or regular? Thank you.
Regular I believe. They should be linked in description...
James did you need to use “freeze mode” on the beauty dish profoto strobe to get a sharp image?
Pretty sure it was "freeze" all around!
@@QuantzPhoto Thanks James. I appreciate you taking the time to reply :)
How are you getting RCS on your R5? I can’t find that settings. The only way I have been able to do it is to use a delay setting in the light itself, rather than using a camera setting. I used this for pictures of kids playing with sparklers. I really like, and want to try what you have done. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Jim, I probably should've mentioned that but I'm using the remote for the strobes to set it to rear (or 2nd) curtain.
@@QuantzPhoto Thanks James, I'll check out my remote and see if mine also has that setting.👍
@@QuantzPhoto 😂I should have read the booklet for the remote, I got it. Thank you.
James, Are most of your shoots on a black backdrop when using Promod's??
Usually unless I can turn the background black with exposure.
@@QuantzPhoto ok thank you!! Looking at investing in some promods. Seems pretty cool..
I take it that Canon added the easy rear curtain sync? In an earlier video u had to use a diff camer to do this…
No I needed up getting the updated Profoto remote with the option. These images were taken with the Nikon D850 though and it allows for it in the menu.
A piece of feedback: I find your intro and transition music parts are significantly louder than your vocal parts. I find I have to keep adjusting the volume throughout to prevent my spouse from glaring at me.
Apologies to your spouse!
You talk to much and don't show enough of the images you took. This is a talking head video.
I appreciate the feedback Rich!
