I can get how you would feel disappointed, but I think there are a few things to consider:
-The Pokémon Company may not have a problem with AI in this contest, but does not want to release an official statement until they discuss their stance more internally. I have to assume at this point they’re aware of its presence.
-It doesn’t obviously speak for the entirety of the country, but the Japanese government (some department, anyway) has put out a statement that it considers generative AI training to not inherently be an infringement of copyright, though outputs may fall into that category.
-My experiences talking to folks about AI-generated content leads me to believe that hard opposition is not a common stance among the general public, and possibly not even artists in particular. My gut feeling is that what you see online is a fringe opinion not indicative of a “silent majority”.
-Actually creating artwork of the kind seen in the finalists using AI typically requires a significant amount of post-generation touchups. Regardless of your opinion on the technology, I think it’s incorrect to imply they just put in a prompt, assuming that’s what you meant.
-AI image detectors are generally not considered terribly reliable, though they may improve with time.
Personally, while I have some mixed feelings about the technology myself, I’m not outright against it being allowed in this kind of context. I think it is generally heavily transformative and falls under fair use, despite the effect it may have on the art market.

I feel that AI Art needs to be explicitly stated under the rules on what not to allow in an art contest and I do want to see it banned in future contests because art contests should be about one's personal application of the skills they honed.
Thats the biggest issue there because The Pokémon Company didnt had the foresight to rulepatch such a thing when the intention for an art contest is supposed to be a contest of one's own artistic skill. Because they didnt explicitly state it, people used AI to skirt those lines.
