Awesome and fitting music. My Great Grandfather was a machine gun operator in WWI. When I was around 12 years old he told me he wanted to share something with me. He wanted to make sure that I understood what war was about and did not sugar coat it. He said he carried a guilt all those years because he out lived the machine gun crew he was assigned to. He told me the other "boys" would get it one by one until only he was left. He said one time he was taking his turn running the gun when an explosion knocked him down and got dirt in his eyes so another fellow took over. Minutes later that fellow was killed. At this point he began to cry and said he was thankful to have been spared but never got over the guilt of surviving when others did not . He also said that there was no telling how many men he himself killed, and had asked God for forgiveness. He was a deacon in the church and I would run up to the front pew and sit with him after Sunday school. I miss my Great Grandpa.
Your grandfather is a very honorable man, That war was baptism by fire and your grandfather passed... He would have been scarred for life and to see you and talk to you maybe his way of at least trying to express the ever so lumbering guilt he had... God bless your grandfather, he deserves to be in heaven so to those who have felt the same way after surviving the war.

We also have to remember that this was the first time tanks were used in full scale combat. if I were to see a massive iron machine made for war I would be scared.

BF1 has me watching all these documentaries and movies. I've always know quite a bit of WW2 history but never gave much thought to WW1 because it is so overshadowed by WW2 in movies and what not.
Exactly how I am. I know so much about WWII and know little about WWI. It's funny though cuz I know so much about certain wars and I'm only 13 years old.
After I returned from vietnam, my father and grandfather all sat down one afternoon and talked about the wars we had seen.. Never before had I heard of either of them speak of it.. though I knew they had both seen combat in the two world wars.. One story that sticks with me is one my grandfather told (he fought for Canada in the great war) He spoke on one late after noon these monster machines had come rolling up to the back of there lines. Most of the fellas were dumbfounded.. they were of course the mark 1 tanks.. they were told that just after dawn the tanks would roll through no mans land and once they passed the wire then the troops would go over and follow them to the Huns position and wipe them out.. It was a terrifying and funny story all at the same time.. Now I see these things rolling through the battel field I am reminded of these stories. My grand father passed way shortly after our "long after noon" of beer and memories.. I came home in 72 (after two tours) and he passed in 75 and my father in 2010.. and that day has faded now that I am in my 70's.. But finding this has brought it back like it was yesterday.. It is a hard memory but a cherished one.. thank you for that! Carry on!
I think they look pretty amazing, not ugly, but strange. These tanks were high tech at there era, imagine seeing something like this for the first time coming at you. They must have seemed unstopable. Immune vs bullets and barbedwires, slowly but surely coming closer. Must have been an epic and unforgetable sight.
To all the people comparing Abrams to these things, keep in mind that these were the first tanks ever built and were designed to take down infantry and storm over trenches while providing cover for our troops. Modern tanks are designed to take down both vehicles and infantry.
Comparing both is like comparing a desert egale to a longbow. They both serve different purpose in different eras so ofc it would be unfair. Now imagine you compare jack to his great grandfather, and tell them both to beef with each other. We will all probably know the result.
Imagine being a German soldier fresh off the train because of the inspiration the Keizer has shown you and being entrenched and all of a sudden a mark 5 tank is charging you at a snails pace returning fire and pretty much bulletproof.
The British Mark IV were the first Tanks designed for breakthrough. The French Renault Tanks were the first Tanks that features a modern turret at a full 360 degree traverse and were Mobile.
You know, despite these tanks' impressive look, from what I read it was the last place where a soldier wanted to be. It was a hot box full of exhaust and if the enemy got you you burn alive on the inside. Also no safety from gas.
I think it’s one of the places the soldiers wanted to be the most when they are already in combat. In the nomansland they needed to run from their trench to enemy’s while being under heavy machine gun fire. In the Tank you would be safe from that Fire and wouldn’t see all the dead bodies around....
That statement is false. The odds to survive in a tank in ww1 are significantly higher than as a foot soldier, mainly for the lack of anti tank weapons. And in case it fails, at least you spent some time in relative safetly before facing the same odds as everybody else during the attack.
There's accounts from tankers who claimed their crews were wiped out inside the tank from machine gun fire occasionally. The overall layout (rhomboid shape, guns on the sides) was very well laid out and makes sense, they were purpose built for this kind of war. The problem was the lack of powerful engines, and that necessitates thinner Armour. Poor safety equipment, and lacking suspension. You were just trapped in this hot loud smelly toxic box, and to top it all off, some machine guns could take you out very quickly, all while you're being thrown to and fro, it would be miserable. But that's war for ya.
I love it. These are fantastic, and the music fits well with the dark dread of seeing one of these mammoth steel monsters, the biggest machine you may have ever seen in your life, ominously crawling towards you, shot and shell bouncing off their iron hides, smelly loud engines hammering away, with the creak of the tracks and the spatter of machine-gun fire. Excellent!
I know they were'nt that fast when you look at it in numbers...but especially the FT17s fairly shifted :D As for the Marks, that must have terrified the hell out of the German infantry! Thanks a million for posting this footage :)
I used to be obsessed with the Big Willie (never knew the name until today) when I was in Elementary school. Every time I went to the library I got the books about tanks and the big willie was the most memorable by far

Aymen Alhashimy. The Big Willie mk1-2 etc was designed to stretch over wide trenches dug by the germans. The cannons were placed on the sides to keep the tank balanced. It performed well for it's time i would say.
Sorry to be a pedant, but there are a couple of thanks in there that aren't WWI. After 8' 08" there's a Christie light tank (USA), followed by a Fiat 3000 (Italy) - the one that does a forward roll. Other than that, this is very nice.

@JTelli786 None, because it wouldn't be able to penetrate the armor of the Abrams or any modern tank, the 75mm on the Mark IV fire inadequate ammunition and they are too light weight and lightly armored to be able to cause any damage by ramming the Abrams if they manage to even hit it at such low speed. The only way I could imagine is boxing the Abrams in.
some times I like the entertain the thought of just how many old British Mk IV's would it take to take on only one M1A2 Abrams, Leopard 2, or a T-90, 50, 500, 5,000?
rules : no running away, no getting out of the tank, no air infantry any kinds of support, no terrain just flat space, no ramming no blocking, no hiding. scenario: the mkIV's was close to the m1a2 surrounding it and they all had infinite ammo and fuel and infinite crew stamina, they had no engine problems or other mechanical problems. lets start : a million shots won't penetrate the m1a2 while the m1a2's machine gun can penetrate the mkIV easily. the mk1 can target the m1a2's gun barrel, tracks radar scopes. but it will be hard to hit since they had bad view and their guns were not accurate. even with the hit it will still need 10-20 more hit to destroy these weak spots. the m1a2 can easily kill the mkIV killing 60 tanks per minute or more the m1a2 weak spots were hard to hit but the mark 4 spams shot at every direction and angle and so hits were made and the gun barrel was destroyed after 5 minutes of shell raining killing the m1a2's all guns and tracks will take for 10 minutes but after that the mk 4 can fire as many times without getting damage and they will kill the m1a2 after a lot of firing so how many was needed : destroying all guns will need 10-15 minutes of shell raining which makes the mk4 lost 600-900 and to achieve shell raining they need a lot of tanks like 100 they also need to cover the lost 600-900 tank's position and a m1a2 destroyed track and guns will need 100mk 4 to destroy the tank over all we need average OF 1500 mark 4 tanks thank you

British Mark V tanks were designed with no suspension, while others like the German A7V and the French St. Chamond had suspension.

there are many reasons why these tanks looked like this not to be ugly but to run over the trenches, barbed wire, no forward cannon for ramming.

They would have to be sped up to keep them viable for gameplay purposes. The real MarkIV tank had top speed of 4-5 kph. Renault FT17 about 7 kph.

@JTelli786 None, because it wouldn't be able to penetrate the armor of the Abrams or any modern tank, the 75mm on the Mark IV fire inadequate ammunition and they are too light weight and lightly armored to be able to cause any damage by ramming the Abrams if they manage to even hit it at such low speed.
The only way I could imagine is boxing the Abrams in.
some times I like the entertain the thought of just how many old British Mk IV's would it take to take on only one M1A2 Abrams, Leopard 2, or a T-90, 50, 500, 5,000?
probably something like a bajilion
rules : no running away, no getting out of the tank, no air infantry any kinds of support, no terrain just flat space, no ramming no blocking, no hiding.
scenario: the mkIV's was close to the m1a2 surrounding it and they all had infinite ammo and fuel and infinite crew stamina, they had no engine problems or other mechanical problems.
lets start :
a million shots won't penetrate the m1a2 while the m1a2's machine gun can penetrate the mkIV easily.
the mk1 can target the m1a2's gun barrel, tracks radar scopes. but it will be hard to hit since they had bad view and their guns were not accurate.
even with the hit it will still need 10-20 more hit to destroy these weak spots.
the m1a2 can easily kill the mkIV killing 60 tanks per minute or more
the m1a2 weak spots were hard to hit but the mark 4 spams shot at every direction and angle and so hits were made and the gun barrel was destroyed after 5 minutes of shell raining
killing the m1a2's all guns and tracks will take for 10 minutes but after that the mk 4 can fire as many times without getting damage and they will kill the m1a2 after a lot of firing
so how many was needed :
destroying all guns will need 10-15 minutes of shell raining which makes the mk4 lost 600-900 and to achieve shell raining they need a lot of tanks like 100 they also need to cover the lost 600-900 tank's position and a m1a2 destroyed track and guns will need 100mk 4 to destroy the tank
over all we need average OF 1500 mark 4 tanks
