I'm so glad you clarified what midrange is. So many people think that having a mid to high curve, 3 and 4 mana value cards, means that your are midrange and that isn't the case. It's the ability to pivot from aggro to control and vice versa that defines midrange, since the strategy lies somewhere in the middle, and the deck makes that pivot post sideboard. Great video and I hope that people wise up to the lingo so we can have a more substantial discourse on the game. Thanks again Dev!
Yo my man... Idk if you'll read this.. but I am so stupid proud you.. it might not mean much coming from a stranger, but you've grinded this channel so hard. and there is not a single mtg UA-camr or streamer that is as unique and dedicated as you in my eyes. You create original scripts and content for every video wether it's a deck or a conversation topic or just doing something you're interested in. It's always fresh and entertaining even if I don't plan on making the deck you are talking about at the time. I've switched souly to the commander format. And I don't find myself watching mtg content anymore, all besides yours, just cuz it's fun and engaging to be apart of your videos. You're so real and down to earth, you make me feel like we're friends in every video when I've never even spoke to you. You deserve the world man I swear. Don't ever get discouraged, I know there are so many like me that love you as person not mention your content. You've single handedly kept me here on this channel with your hard work and attitude towards this game. You are and I can't stress this enough a legend.. I started playing this game when I was 11 and I started watching you not long after that, I'm almost 20 now. you're a role model and a hero to me sir. I remember the first time I had a good job and was able to build one of your non budget decks and how excited I was. I can't tell you how many games your budget fnm decks won me, how many sealed preleases you got me through and so much more. You are a beast. I apologize for the essay man but I could honestly go on forever about you and what you did for me. I'll end this with saying I didn't have much growing up. But I had this game, and one night a week where I could forget all the drama and nastiness in my life playing with your budget decks and winning and having that little something to make me feel smart and special for the 5 hours I got to play fnm. Thank you man... Thank you..
Oh my god so so so so so good. Most videos out there are for people who are brand new or total edgelords. As an intermediate player midrange songs like the perfect place to land between aggro and control and you just let us all have a very genetle wander through all the theory whilst showing the practicalities too. I will return to this video time and again. Thank you.
love the guide, lots of players will benefit from a more general guide like this. Myself included. Easily earned a new sub, I'm excited to start improving my deckbuilding skills with your other videos. Cheers!
This popped up at a perfect time for me as I was wondering what to craft from the woe set and midrange golgari seems perfect for me great vid Dev 👍👍👍👍👏👏
I agree, midrange is in a great place in standard. Aside from the meta decks, I've been enjoying a golgari enchant/graveyard midrange deck. And just today I cooked up a gruul werewolvss midrange deck for the first time since Crimson Vow came out & it performed great. Honestly, I can't wait for the New Capenna triome nonsense. I think it could make midrange even better & more diverse.
Perfect timing. I was playing a lot of aggro humans and merfolk, but a lot of control and midrange decks have been hating on that lately. So, I adapted my humans deck to midrange for tokens and cards after my creatures die.
I really like this type of video where you are rating and going over some of these well-performing decks, explaining why they would be good, etc. Great stuff as always Dev!
Great video. It is amusing to think back when I first started playing MTG and bought my first precon: Dominator, Exodus. LOL I could have picked Slivers but I went with mono blue midrange tempo control. Soon after I made my first deck, mono green stomp and Cleric tribal midrange (Onslaught block). I think my favorite is Midrange Tempo after making so many decks over the years, least that style seems to be the most flexible :P
I just stumbled onto this gem of yours. Thought it'd be cool if you did a how to build Aggro and Control video, too. You could even reproduce the formula every year, come rotation, with examples of decks or specific honorable mention cards in Standard. Keep up the great content.
Thank you for this! In depth deck archetypes have kinda been wide open since TCC did the series a few years ago. Time for a much welcomed refresher course!
I just want to say that I appreciate your insights to deck building it was one of your decks that I piloted to several first places at Fnms and got me into competing in bigger magic tournaments. This break down of mid range strategies is top tier sir. I would hope to see break downs of other archetypes in the future or even why some are not viable in current metas
One of my favorite "trueisms" of Magic is that when midrange is a viable archetype for your format, then that means your format is healthy and in a good place
Midrange is my fav. Aggro don't let you play (ends quickly, where is the fun?), control don't let you play (boring and don't let the other player play, where is the fun?) In midrange, you get to PLAY. There's the fun :D
My whooole play group hates midrange except for me. “It’s not creative!” They say. So I end up playing control decks that win game one and go waaaay to long for game two to happen. They created this monster and now they have to live with it lol
This dude is a treasure. By far the best Magic personality out there. Watching his videos is like hanging with an old friend. Keep it up Dev!!
For real! This comment is as real as Dev!
Agreed

@championchap my only argument here is that there were tons of midrange lurrus decks pre-ban.
Midrange is easily my favorite archetype, and I think he really nailed the attributes of a midrange deck well. Great video, good guide.

I always liked your deck techs, loved the reviews, but these theory/philosophy videos are by far my favourite ones.
You're the man
As a final fantasy ffxiv player, a mid ranger magic player, and someone who was raised listening to dave matthews that intro came right for my jugular
Hey man, great video! Could you do a deck building 101 series? I'd love to be able to see your process.
Ya this is 1 year old but I could not watch enough of these kinds of vids from you Dev, especially midrange haha LOVE MIDRANGE

Helped me bulk up my phyrexian obliterator deck. Cheers! Great vid.
This is great for newbies like me, having only been playing for about 18 months. Thanks Mate
love the guide, lots of players will benefit from a more general guide like this. Myself included. Easily earned a new sub, I'm excited to start improving my deckbuilding skills with your other videos. Cheers!
You only subbed NOW? The shame
That intro talk on classes and how they relate to deck types was amazing
Lots of multiple layered references. Concrete info. I'm just baffeled at the content quality of this video. Many thanks!
I'm from the future and my hand is absolutely disrupted by a damn bat.
This popped up at a perfect time for me as I was wondering what to craft from the woe set and midrange golgari seems perfect for me great vid Dev 👍👍👍👍👏👏
Always glad to come back to the couch
I agree, midrange is in a great place in standard.

Really dig content like this!
Ahh, this video makes me miss Questing Beast in standard.
Great video. I would like if you did a video on aggro and control decks too.
I really like this type of video where you are rating and going over some of these well-performing decks, explaining why they would be good, etc. Great stuff as always Dev!
Just found your channel after getting into MtG this week. You rock!
You are the best and always a joy to watch :)
Really amazing video , i enjoyes watching this alot. This is a great video for newer players.
Great video.

My favourite deck type!

My God this is a masterclass
That Dave Matthews reference just gave me flashbacks of being in the car with my mom for long drives and having to hear SO MUCH Dave matthews band lol
This is a great video concept/style, and yeah, midrange is my favourite archetype. Cheers Dev!
Well done! I've been playing for a long time and this clarified some things about midrange for me.
I am a midrange players at heart. Thanks for this video.
Thank you for this! In depth deck archetypes have kinda been wide open since TCC did the series a few years ago. Time for a much welcomed refresher course!
Very comprehensive breakdown my man. Quality content. Well done
The Dave Matthews dig was so damn good Dev xD
This was great. I’d love a recurring feature like this that’s just a review of the top two to four viable midrange strategies for current standard.
This was fantastic Dev! Thanks!
I do love me some midrange decks yeah! Great guide and it feels good to be able to play those decks now in standard.
what a nice surprise! thanks for the video Dev!
Some real zingers in there! Great content, dig into this deeper if you want, I'd watch 'em!
Whoaaaa space between held up decently. I just saw them like 7 years ago
Love this style of video
Great work on this video Dev, thanks a lot for the great explanations and useful information as well as history!
One of my favorite "trueisms" of Magic is that when midrange is a viable archetype for your format, then that means your format is healthy and in a good place
Spirit monger is probably the first card I would think of when I think of midrange. Maybe Obstinate Baloth or Thragtusk (aka "swag"tusk)
this was a really cool video to watch. thanks for doing this
The lotus lookout is one of my LGSs!
Hello Dev! Love your content man keep it up. As a newer player to mtg this is awesome info to learn!
Midrange is my fav. Aggro don't let you play (ends quickly, where is the fun?), control don't let you play (boring and don't let the other player play, where is the fun?)
In midrange, you get to PLAY. There's the fun :D
Love the deck breakdown.
Brilliant Video. Love you Dev
Pls do this type of video for tempo. Midrange and tempo are my favorite archetypes
Love me some midrange, my favorite archetype!
Thank you so much! Love the insight on archetype build. Please keep them coming! Do you have a discord?
You laughing at your own joke make my day, keep it up dude!!
In today’s video, the gloves are coming off in the age old grudge match between Dev and Dave Matthews.
I've watched this a couple times now and I really appreciate how you explain things clearly, I would like to build a vehicles deck.... Any ideas?
Good lord, I've never been this early to anything!
Angels are with you
man that dmb joke was amazing
Fun, as always. Thanks!
I LOVE this so much
Love this video!
Midrange aka fair magic as Richard Garfield phd intended
really great video, thank you
My whooole play group hates midrange except for me. “It’s not creative!” They say. So I end up playing control decks that win game one and go waaaay to long for game two to happen. They created this monster and now they have to live with it lol
Tireless Tracker standard was awesome
Original FF + Vin Diesel = Thumps UP
I thought you were going to liken the Red Mage to The Last Witch Hunter -- not unlike Vin Diesel.
Ohhh big fan of a good midrange deck.
Siege rhino, best rhino. He (she?) won me so many games when it was in standard. Abzan midrange BBY!
More videos like this, too
I finally understand midrange
Great video
The jokes are toooooo clean 😂 killin it man
Can you do a video on how to build a commander aristocrat deck?
Like that 😉 keep up the good work!
hardest part for me has been deciding what to make with limited wildcards
Midrange is sweet, hopefully there will actually be another good one in standard
"liked" for the lo-fi title music. (not that its better than the vintage bars)
Was that your back or the couch that cracked at the beginning? Better get both checked just in case.
What was more midrange to you? Tragtusk or Siege Rhino?
Red Mage for life!
I hope shrines are on the list 🙏
It's funny because I can do aggro or control but it all falls apart the moment you ask for midrange
That opening had me concerned you were gonna fall off the couch. I hope you're all good. I take it your health has gotten better?
Thank you.
After watching this I think I would call myself a midrange Timmy is that's a thing.
Very cool video
I'm so sick of the boardwipe tribal control decks in standard right now that want to drag a game out to turn 25 and I just resign because I'm bored.
My shivan dragon sengir vampire deck got a shoutout
The intro was funny
Vin Diesel eats crayons...
' You are a banana' _ Edd
question do u have a way of getting messages?? looking for help and advice??
Mid range for life.
Is that crono cross?
Naw dude, think older
Damn I havent seen you in a long time you lost alot of weight. Keep up the content bro
I feel like I try to build midrange and usually end up going too far elsewhere.
