the league is more fun when the flyers are good. I wish your team great success in bouncing back. and there's a lot of good players there still so who knows, with some competent management and a bit of luck, flyers could be back sooner than a lot of folks think possible.

On a positive side for me, I got to my 1st NHL regular season game this year ( just moved to Winnipeg in December). My flyers beat the Jets 4-0 in Winnipeg. At least I got that :)

He gets along with Torts which is good long term and he has an opportunity over the next to years two really shape this team. However... Dave Scott is still governor. @@yurk21 I would argue passing on a future 50 goal scorer (something Philly kind of desperately needs is any type of goal scoring) for a top 4 defenseman who will be forced to play bottom pair minutes because of who Philly has and will likely end up ruining him, that is a really damn big oof. Other teams did pass on Caufield sure but Philly stands out because of how big of a miss that was. Plus the video of the Flyers fans cheering for the USNDP announcement then realizing they drafted Cam York is an all-time classic lol.
My thoughts, I think Risto has had a better season than what you think. He’s probably the most improved player on the team. He’s -4 with 14 points this year. Compare that to Provy’s numbers, 4g 18a at -14.

Flyers are in Sharks territory. They kinda need a rebuilt, but they kinda can't really do it. They have a lot of long untradeable contracts. So, I guess keeping Torts, maybe even adding pieces in a nondestructive way and hoping for the best, is the strategy for now?
that's probably the only possible way because of the lottery, they have to get vets they are stars for the short term like 1 year or 2 until a big time young star becomes available. i mean i mean you look at the stars, they have star vets but they are not overpaid and have great term and still winning games, it's very difficult to get a young star.
I do not think Fletcher will get another shot at a GM job, but I also thought Ron Hextall would not get another shot at a GM job after his firing from Philly either... so who knows. The NHL really likes to cycle through coaches and GMs like crazy...
I think, in part, it's a mix of fan reaction to a GM who has no experience, and also, if you are betting your job on how well the GM performes, it's probably a better bet to get a GM you know.

I'm pretty sure he gave the flyers a discount cause he wanted to stay in Philly. Not to mention Torts has called him their most improved player this season. Yes the first round pick was a big overpayment though

Regarding Brendan Lemieux. Fletcher and Kings GM Rob Blake had agreed to a 5th round pick for Zack MacEwen. But Blake needed to move Lemieux first before he could make the deal happen, so Fletcher just agreed to take him along with the 5th.
I'd say when you errantly trade away draft picks and aren't developing young players from within or opting to trade around for free agents willy nilly... Your doomed. That's why for example the devils have had much more success as of late. Deep prospect pool and development of their young stars
Go easy on Risto Shannon. He's far and away been the team's best defenseman this year and has more than proved that contact is worth it. Hayes, Laughton, and Provorov have been the worst contracts. The 3 of them are absolute trash.

I agree with you on the Sanheim and Hayes contracts, but Risto has absolutely NOT had a "nightmare of a season." That's the bandwagon talking. He's actually playing very good defense and he will continue to get better. Poor guy's never had the same coach 2 years in a row. Very good overall analysis though. Could have mentioned Atkinson and Couturier didn't play a shift all year.
Didn't watch video yet but as a Flyers fan. Fletcher was brought in for his "Bias for Action", they were gunning to get back into the playoffs after they pulled out of Hextalls "rebuild" early. Fletchers early moves were risky like bringing in Niskanen but mostly worked out and it was mostly down hill from there. If Ellis wasn't half dead and they didn't suffer medical malpractice that is their doctors then he very well might still have a job. He went from some splashy, risky moves to being more of being a guy that applied a band aid to everything.
Meh, they traded picks and DeAngelo has had a decent season from an offensive standpoint. I did mention him in the video, but the trade to me is still somewhat justifiable.

The Flyers are the team that was most screwed by the pandemic. They were strong in the "Vigneaults first season with a new team", and it's been all downhill from since.
I don't blame the pandemic, this franchise has been a circus since 2013. The drafting has been abysmal, cap management god awful and asset management/development laughable. There's serious issues above the GM level.
The JVR Contract by Hextall was supposedly pushed on him by management. I believe he was forced into making the deal because the likes of Clarke, Holmgren, et al. wanted to see something done other than just sit back and wait for drafted players to develop.

Flyers need to Fire All their PRO scouts... some of the players they signed recently and gave Huge contracts to are just bad or way past their prime... and even flyer fans knew that BEFORE they even played a single game as a Flyer.

Going back into their own division was never going to help the Flyers, the East was mostly the Metro, and the one major difference (Carolina out, Boston in) was a lateral move at most.
I always thought that Chuck Fletcher was never an NHL gm. Its purely name recognition (Cliff Fletcher) And in my opinion Mike Yeo is not an NHL coach either. It's interesting how they both ended up in Philly.
The fact that it never mattered if it's Homer, Hextall or Fletcher, the Flyers have always signed FA's to god awful deals, traded the most nonsense stuff and developed assets horrifically. It shows that the real issue is above, Homer shouldn't be in the organization still, neither should Clarke and whomever else is there with influence over the last 10 years. Just look at their draft history, all rounds, not just round 1. Look at how many of those panned out at all, look at the signings over the last 10 years and trades. It stinks of just the most out of touch advisorship.
I give Fletcher credit for making them the Broad Street Bullies again (leading the league in fights). I enjoyed watching them play despite being mediocre in the standings. Hextall's draft picks weren't that great but he cleared out bad contracts. Sanheim & Hayes are very bad contracts Fletcher brought in.
I think it was announced at the STH town hall that Ellis is done. If Briere is committed to a rebuild he’ll trade Konecny. It would be an unpopular move but Konecny as our best offensive player is indicative of how low the talent level is in Philly. He’s a solid fourth best on a contender.
Chuck had some bad luck during his time with the Flyers, BUT the bad moves he made were horrific. He made maybe 3 or 4 decent trades, but man this last deadline is where he royally screwed up. Fletcher wasn't the main problem in Philly, he was a symptom of a major Comcast problem. So ends the rock bottom phase of the Philadelphia Flyers. Welcome to Philly, again Danny Briere. No where to go but up.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the Flyers, if Coots and Cam are healthy next season, we'll make the playoffs next season. Our first line would be Tippet-Coots-Atkinson, 2nd line as TK-Hayes-Farabee. Those two lines have the potential to be fantastic. And with Laughton and Frost as your 3rd and 4th line centers, this team could be considerably different next season. The flyers aren't as bad as everyone thinks they are, but the reality is, you cant lose your number 1 winger, center, and d-man basically at the same time, and expect postive results. Glad Fletchers gone though

But the front office and "advisers" like Clarke, Holmgren, Barber AKA the last cup guys need to go, just retire already because the game has passed you by. I'd say even have the team sold to new ownership but that will never happen. As long as there asses in the seats it won't change.
I think the problems with the Flyers go well past the GMs door, deep into the front office where the culture of this team has held them up for nearly 50 years. Having Clarke, Holmgren and even Breire there stops them from progressing to the skating and skilled players the rest of the NHL embraces- and wins Stanley Cups with. Ownership has no one there who knows hockey like a Montreal or Colorado, and frankly come off as uncaring about it at all. I'd 100% say it had no consequence that a week ago the Rangers fans obliterated Flyer's home ice. Sad, sad ownership compared to the Sixers, Phillies and Eagles. As a 50 year fan, I see nothing changing by not clearing out every old Flyer from the front office, hiring a top talent evaluator/draft savvy GM, and Comcast selling this team post haste. I'm strongly thinking Philadelphia would be much better off with the Flyers organization moving out of the city, and a new expansion team move in with new, fresh ideas and zero Flyers organization members involved. After all this time it seems like the only way to achieve an NHL quality organization.
I’m a Flyers fan and this disaster is not all Fletcher’s fault. Let me explain. The Flyers original owner Ed Snider died of cancer in 2016. He was diagnosed in 2013 so that is essentially when he stopped running the team. Dave Scott (who was the VP at Comcast Cable and knew nothing about hockey) was installed to run the Flyers. This is when the team’s stagnation began and has continued for a decade. Dave Scott had no vision for the team and would not allow whoever was the GM to rebuild. So the Flyers have done these half a** retools every summer and it’s like Groundhog Day every season. They get locked into these bad contracts and never had any cap flexibility (hence we couldn’t sign hometown boy Gaudreau last summer. Now don’t get me wrong, Fletcher was bad and deserved to get fired. But he was hired to keep retooling the team every year and no GM would succeed doing that. The team is a disaster as we’ve missed the playoffs 7 of the last 11 seasons and have no young nucleus. Carter Hart is probably the only bright spot but he will be wasted in net cause this thing will take 4-5 years to rebuild if done right. It’s embarrassment as we have one of the most loyal fanbases in all sports. The last 3 years overall attendance hasn’t been this low since 1971-72 (we were an expansion team then). I gave up my season tickets years ago and they will have to go farther than firing Fletcher to get me to believe it will be different this time. The Flyers management needs a total culture change from top to bottom. Fletcher was just a symptom of the problem.
While Hexy had a couple bad contracts on his roster, PLEASE go back and consider what a load of bad contracts he inherited from Holmgren. I think Danny Briere will be a huge improvement but he'll be hamstrung by those top three contracts and the only way to move each of those $5M+contracts is with prospects/draft picks... I don't think Briere will go that route either after seeing the Fletcher Fiasco! So it's a long time coming before the Flyers are good again.
As a Wild fan I give my condolences to Fletcher's next victim and to the Flyers fan base a hardy cheer! The light will shine again in Philly!

Ristolainen contract signing went like this:
Ristolainen: “I played poorly but can bounce back. Give me a two year bridge at 6 million.”
Fletcher: “How about 25.5 million for five years?”
Ristolainen: “Are you out of your mind!?!? Sure, I’ll take the cash and play for a trash team. If I go to free agency I’d be lucky to get a one year for 2 million.”
Fletcher: “Outstanding, sign here!” Internal thought, if Fletcher has thoughts, (I wish I hadn’t failed math.)

What’s mind-numbing about the Risto extension (ignoring the horrible trade) is that he was statistically terrible the year he was on an expiring contract. Then Chuck dives into the sunken coat fallacy and decides Risto needs a fat bag.
And he's been much much better this season. He isn't the problem and I don't see how a 5.1 million cap hit for a big 2nd pair rhd in his prime is this ridiculous overpayment. Had he gone to the market I think he would've gotten more

Regarding Brendan Lemieux. Fletcher and Kings GM Rob Blake had agreed to a 5th round pick for Zack MacEwen. But Blake needed to move Lemieux first before he could make the deal happen, so Fletcher just agreed to take him along with the 5th.

I'd say when you errantly trade away draft picks and aren't developing young players from within or opting to trade around for free agents willy nilly... Your doomed. That's why for example the devils have had much more success as of late. Deep prospect pool and development of their young stars

Go easy on Risto Shannon. He's far and away been the team's best defenseman this year and has more than proved that contact is worth it. Hayes, Laughton, and Provorov have been the worst contracts. The 3 of them are absolute trash.
And hold up here? How has Risto had a "nightmare season?" Are you even watching the same team as me? Risto is a beast and has propped up this d-core by himself

I agree with you on the Sanheim and Hayes contracts, but Risto has absolutely NOT had a "nightmare of a season." That's the bandwagon talking. He's actually playing very good defense and he will continue to get better. Poor guy's never had the same coach 2 years in a row. Very good overall analysis though. Could have mentioned Atkinson and Couturier didn't play a shift all year.
I'd have mentioned not offering Gaudreau a deal when he expected to come to Philly. They could've made space
Didn't watch video yet but as a Flyers fan. Fletcher was brought in for his "Bias for Action", they were gunning to get back into the playoffs after they pulled out of Hextalls "rebuild" early. Fletchers early moves were risky like bringing in Niskanen but mostly worked out and it was mostly down hill from there. If Ellis wasn't half dead and they didn't suffer medical malpractice that is their doctors then he very well might still have a job. He went from some splashy, risky moves to being more of being a guy that applied a band aid to everything.
Philly has the same problem as Vancouver. "We just need 1 piece to be a contending team"
Difference between the Flyers and the Canucks is that the Flyers are finally committing to a rebuild

Meh, they traded picks and DeAngelo has had a decent season from an offensive standpoint. I did mention him in the video, but the trade to me is still somewhat justifiable.
@@TheHockeyGuy Hi. That is the point. He traded picks, draft capital, that this team needs to rebuild. He had no plan. In a year when the draft is so loaded, he thought this team was close to making the playoffs. They needed to be baaaaad. Not just bad enough that they will probably just miss getting in the top 4 picks that are supposed to be Can't miss prospects. Terrible acquisition. Wasn't needed.
The Flyers are the team that was most screwed by the pandemic. They were strong in the "Vigneaults first season with a new team", and it's been all downhill from since.
I don't blame the pandemic, this franchise has been a circus since 2013. The drafting has been abysmal, cap management god awful and asset management/development laughable. There's serious issues above the GM level.
Any thoughts on the Old BSB 'advisers' and Dave Scott's future.

The JVR Contract by Hextall was supposedly pushed on him by management. I believe he was forced into making the deal because the likes of Clarke, Holmgren, et al. wanted to see something done other than just sit back and wait for drafted players to develop.

Flyers need to Fire All their PRO scouts... some of the players they signed recently and gave Huge contracts to are just bad or way past their prime... and even flyer fans knew that BEFORE they even played a single game as a Flyer.

One thing not mentioned was Chuck not pursuing Johnny Gaudreau in anyway
Going back into their own division was never going to help the Flyers, the East was mostly the Metro, and the one major difference (Carolina out, Boston in) was a lateral move at most.
Two other picks that could pan out is wisdom and emil andrae. Wisdom could be a solid high energy bottom 6 that can chip in here and there.
Fletcher was one of the GMs of all time.

I always thought that Chuck Fletcher was never an NHL gm. Its purely name recognition (Cliff Fletcher) And in my opinion Mike Yeo is not an NHL coach either. It's interesting how they both ended up in Philly.

The fact that it never mattered if it's Homer, Hextall or Fletcher, the Flyers have always signed FA's to god awful deals, traded the most nonsense stuff and developed assets horrifically. It shows that the real issue is above, Homer shouldn't be in the organization still, neither should Clarke and whomever else is there with influence over the last 10 years. Just look at their draft history, all rounds, not just round 1. Look at how many of those panned out at all, look at the signings over the last 10 years and trades. It stinks of just the most out of touch advisorship.
I give Fletcher credit for making them the Broad Street Bullies again (leading the league in fights). I enjoyed watching them play despite being mediocre in the standings.
Hextall's draft picks weren't that great but he cleared out bad contracts. Sanheim & Hayes are very bad contracts Fletcher brought in.
Noone can ever top Benning. The OEL trade will haunt the Canucks for the entirety of Hughes and Petterssons careers.
I think it was announced at the STH town hall that Ellis is done.
If Briere is committed to a rebuild he’ll trade Konecny. It would be an unpopular move but Konecny as our best offensive player is indicative of how low the talent level is in Philly. He’s a solid fourth best on a contender.

Chuck had some bad luck during his time with the Flyers, BUT the bad moves he made were horrific. He made maybe 3 or 4 decent trades, but man this last deadline is where he royally screwed up.
Fletcher wasn't the main problem in Philly, he was a symptom of a major Comcast problem.
So ends the rock bottom phase of the Philadelphia Flyers.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say the Flyers, if Coots and Cam are healthy next season, we'll make the playoffs next season. Our first line would be Tippet-Coots-Atkinson, 2nd line as TK-Hayes-Farabee. Those two lines have the potential to be fantastic. And with Laughton and Frost as your 3rd and 4th line centers, this team could be considerably different next season. The flyers aren't as bad as everyone thinks they are, but the reality is, you cant lose your number 1 winger, center, and d-man basically at the same time, and expect postive results. Glad Fletchers gone though
So, the Flyers decided they needed to fire Fletcher, but that it could wait until the end of the season. Beg your pardon?! Even most poorly-run organizations wouldn't retain interns for months after determining they were unqualified or untrustworthy, never mind a top executive.
As a Devils fan, I love dunking on the Flyers. But I don't see how you can criticize Fletcher's drafting. Yes, it will take time to prove but his picks look excellent imo. Trouble is there weren't nearly enough of them. And that's on him. And Sanheim kekeke

I like Briere as GM as he's relatively newer in hockey thinking. But the front office and "advisers" like Clarke, Holmgren, Barber AKA the last cup guys need to go, just retire already because the game has passed you by. I'd say even have the team sold to new ownership but that will never happen. As long as there asses in the seats it won't change.
I think the problems with the Flyers go well past the GMs door, deep into the front office where the culture of this team has held them up for nearly 50 years. Having Clarke, Holmgren and even Breire there stops them from progressing to the skating and skilled players the rest of the NHL embraces- and wins Stanley Cups with. Ownership has no one there who knows hockey like a Montreal or Colorado, and frankly come off as uncaring about it at all. I'd 100% say it had no consequence that a week ago the Rangers fans obliterated Flyer's home ice. Sad, sad ownership compared to the Sixers, Phillies and Eagles.
As a 50 year fan, I see nothing changing by not clearing out every old Flyer from the front office, hiring a top talent evaluator/draft savvy GM, and Comcast selling this team post haste.
I'm strongly thinking Philadelphia would be much better off with the Flyers organization moving out of the city, and a new expansion team move in with new, fresh ideas and zero Flyers organization members involved. After all this time it seems like the only way to achieve an NHL quality organization.
I’m a Flyers fan and this disaster is not all Fletcher’s fault. Let me explain. The Flyers original owner Ed Snider died of cancer in 2016. He was diagnosed in 2013 so that is essentially when he stopped running the team. Dave Scott (who was the VP at Comcast Cable and knew nothing about hockey) was installed to run the Flyers. This is when the team’s stagnation began and has continued for a decade. Dave Scott had no vision for the team and would not allow whoever was the GM to rebuild. So the Flyers have done these half a** retools every summer and it’s like Groundhog Day every season. They get locked into these bad contracts and never had any cap flexibility (hence we couldn’t sign hometown boy Gaudreau last summer. Now don’t get me wrong, Fletcher was bad and deserved to get fired. But he was hired to keep retooling the team every year and no GM would succeed doing that. The team is a disaster as we’ve missed the playoffs 7 of the last 11 seasons and have no young nucleus. Carter Hart is probably the only bright spot but he will be wasted in net cause this thing will take 4-5 years to rebuild if done right. It’s embarrassment as we have one of the most loyal fanbases in all sports. The last 3 years overall attendance hasn’t been this low since 1971-72 (we were an expansion team then). I gave up my season tickets years ago and they will have to go farther than firing Fletcher to get me to believe it will be different this time. The Flyers management needs a total culture change from top to bottom. Fletcher was just a symptom of the problem.
While Hexy had a couple bad contracts on his roster, PLEASE go back and consider what a load of bad contracts he inherited from Holmgren. I think Danny Briere will be a huge improvement but he'll be hamstrung by those top three contracts and the only way to move each of those $5M+contracts is with prospects/draft picks... I don't think Briere will go that route either after seeing the Fletcher Fiasco! So it's a long time coming before the Flyers are good again.
Thank God Philly is gonna get Bedard. Him, Cutter & Gunnar Wolfe will turn this team around
