Thanks for watching. This trimmer was getting tougher and tougher to start and run. Finally it wouldn't start at all. The diagnosis was the metering diaphragm was hardening and not working like it was supposed to. This was a down and dirty repair where I didn't even remove the carb from the engine. Thanks for watching and please consider subscribing.
Perfect example of companies designed obsolescence so you get duped into buying new trimmers every couple of years. Great work my friend!
I agree and Thank you David Gibson
You are a savior thank you so much I've been killing myself trying to understand how to fix it without having to buy a new one... Once again thank you and keep making great content.
Thank you Ismael Rodriguez for the comment I appreciate it .
Really grateful for this video. Got our trimmer going again when we thought it was completely gone. Great work :)
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Thanks bro. This was my problem and runs like new. FYI I also use and always have used ethanol free fuel. My equipment are all 6 yrs old. This is the first problem I have had. Thanks again you saved me hundreds!
No problem and thanks for the comment
This video is very helpful. I have that exact same trimmer and had trouble starting it and keeping it running. It used to take 10-15 minutes to warm up before i could even touch the throttle. Eventually it got so bad i had to use carb cleaner, seafoam, and starting fluid just for it to start. i am going to get a new diaphram right now. Thanks!
Thank Michael Holding for the comment I appreciate it
Man thank you! That was awesome. I know it’s a good trimmer so I didn’t want to get rid of it and this was exactly what my problem was!! Thank you thank you thank you!✌🏽

Great, succinct instructions. Thank you! I hope this saves me from having to buy a new trimmer. Same problem, upon starting, it sounded like it was "choking" (kind of like I remember a 70's car doing) and it would stop after a couple of put-puts. Took it in a few days ago for a diagnostic, I was told it needs a new carburetor, and a new something or other for the constant oil leaking (which has been there since day 1 out of the box). It's a 32cc 4 cycle Troy Bilt with jump start capability. I really like this machine, and even though I have a lot of territory to cover with it, it really doesn't get a lot of use. Maybe 6 times a year, between string and blade use. Everything else gets done by the tractor. My lawn equipment gets little use because it rains and floods for 6 months, then dry season comes when nothing grows. So, I am miffed that I have to already replace the trimmer; it's by calendar time only 2 years old, maybe, but lightly used. I use Non-Ethanol fuel in all my lawn equipment. The Husquie equipment is 14 years old, and still going. This is my 4th TB trimmer, the most expensive one I've bought, but the one that's given me the most problems. I have had to replace one or the other of the string spring's pawl, 3 times already. Fortunately, that was a cheap & easy fix. Again, thanks for the video! **IF ANYONE reading this comment has any ideas or suggestions for me, within April-May 2019, I'll sincerely appreciate them. Thanks!
Thank you VeeJay Vargas for the comment. I'll be honest I'm not fond if 4cycle trimmers. I'd rather do 2cycle. I find this finicky to start even with a new carb and the valves adjusted. Have you checked to make sure theres not too much oil? I usually find these slightly overfilled and it cause a leak and sometimes running problems.
I have the same trimmer with the jump start and it's only a year old. Has leaked oil since day one and they give you just enough oil for it to get to the bottom of the dipstick. Has slowly died on me to the point where it doesn't run for more than a few minutes. I'm disappointed with the quality to say the least. Definitely not going TB again
@@ryanvess6162 I completely understand. Thanks for the comment.
I had a Craftsman 30cc that looked exactly like the one featured in this video. Found out that all of these were most likely made by Murray and were junk. Went through 3 of them in about 14 month period. String heads were junk and the pull-start would free-spool when I tried to crank it. Sears replaced all but the last under the 2 yr manufacturers warranty and refused to replaced the last. I showed my behind and almost got the Police called on me. Got it replaced by a privately owned Hometown Sears store with a newer model. Haven't had much trouble out of the newest one. I'm buying Husqvarna when this one dies.
Wow thanks for the info. Husqvarnas are pretty good trimmers.
I have the same trimmer except it's a craftsman instead of a troy-bilt. I recently noticed that the pull starter was starting to skip. (and yes, I was very gentle with it whenever I used it.) So I took the starter assembly off and the first thing that I noticed was that one of the pawls were missing and was sitting inside the case. Whenever I inspected the pawl, the tiny little tab was snapped off. So then I got the idea to drill out a little hole wear the tab used to be. After I did that, I got the smallest wood nail that I had and heated it up with a lighter. Then I got a hammer and gently tapped the nail into the hole. After that, I let it cool down and put a drop of Krazy glue where the nail was. Then I reassembled the starter assembly and put the cover back on. Then I tested it and... It snapped off again. So I was getting pretty desperate at this point and looked up the model to buy new pawls. Ordered them, threw them back in and, SNAPPED AGAIN! I looked up videos about that model to see if people were having the same problems and a few people were so then that's when I was about to give up. Then it came up to my mind about the fact that it has an electric start feature...🤦♂️ Soon I will be ordering the troy-bilt electric starter for a drill since I have a few of them. but anyway, if you read it this far, thank you! And btw you are the one that got me started on fixing small engines. So once again, thank you.
I appreciate the compliment, and yes the electric start is what they always wanted you to buy from the start., thank you TheGemmyRestorer.
Great video.

You're welcome.
Hello I'm sorry I don't know where to find the link for the part or the sprayer sorry I'm not very computer savvy again the video is awesome thank you
I have th Troy-Bilt TB6044XP - Straight Shaft Gas String Trimmer, and it uses the same carb. I am hopeful that this will fix my problem also. Thanks for making the video!
It should fix it. If not try consider a carb replacement. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it

hey Chris, did you have to buy a multi pack off Amazon? that is the only way I have seen them. I have the same trimmer 6044XP.
Great job! I like these 4 cycle trimmers, easy to work on, but as you said way to heavy.
Thank you Alan Marshall for the comment I appreciate it . If you have have a lot of trimming you'll feel it the next day.
I just got a Husqvarna 324L. Super light. I love the 4 stroke over the old 2 stroke.
For those who have bogging issues when adding throttle try removing the muffler and the spark arrestor screen as it may be clogged. either that or if your carb is adjustable try tuning it.
Thanks for the
Thanks,a friend went battery powered and gave me this. I knew it was the ethanol poisoning the carb.
worst think you can put into a small engine is ethanol gas. Thank you for your time I appreciate it.
Thank you bro u make perfect sense
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Thanks, great video
Thank you
Did just that and still can’t start my trimmer. I’m leaning more towards the carburetor issue because when I remove a spark plug and squirt little gas in there, it starts and runs for 3 seconds or so.
then I would replace the carb
Great video I have the same one but mine the purge valve won’t suck air into it what could that be
There could be a clog in the carb or the diaphragm has hardened which won't open the needle valve. The result is a primer that won't fill up.
I have a four cycle Troy built that the pull rope is on the other side towards the grip. It runs fine or more less OK until it gets really hot and then once you turn it off to change the string it won’t restart. What do you think that is
Thanks for the comment . First try check the oil level and its color. Next thing would be to check the valve lash. If that checks out then I'll go with carb problem
Hey what could be cause be of not getting gas through the primer bulb, into the carb? Fuel lines are new and I've tried switching the orientation of lines to carb in ever possible combination. I removed the filter from the tank in suspicion that it was plugging. I also tried pinching back on downstream fuel line to give the bulb something to prime against with no luck. Note: I know not getting gas is the problem because with the air filter removed I can look down the throttle body and see just a tiny bit of fuel pissing in there when actuating the bulb. Thank you
Thank you for the comment. If the diaphragm inside the carb has hardened and moved away from the rocker arm then it won't allow fuel to pass thru the carb and into the primer bulb. Replace the diaphragm or order a new carb.
Yeah those metering diagrams are like touching a butterfly's wings when they're brand new, so when they start getting old and brittle they'll be the
that Is the best explanation for a metering diaphragm I've ever heard.
Well thank you! The first time I had a new one to put into a trimmer I was amazed at how soft and pliable it was and that's what came to mind was a butterfly LOL
So my problem is that it won't turn right so it won't start. The start pull is bad and can't seem to see what's with it since the two clamps inside look okay to me...any advice?
You can remove the recoil assembly and turn the part inside by hand
If it spends freely then consider buying s new or used recoil assembly. Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
I’m going to try this to fix my weed wacker. I took it apart and that diaphragm was very crusty.
What does that part do?
I couldn’t find the individual part, so I’m having to buy an entire carb. I’m just curious what that diaphragm does, and if it would start running if I can find that part. Thanks for the great video!
It basically replaces the bowl and float section of a carb on a lawn mower. Its very important to a 2 cycle carb that it be very flexible.
One problem you use the same machine as I have and I was hoping you’d show line replacement if going that far. Everyone else using different models or two line purge button, not using three line.....
Well at the time lines were not a problem. I would show a line replacement but I don't have this trimmer anymore. Let look and see if i have another video that would work for you.
Mine will start after choke but won't stay running , replaced little bubble , didn't check that diaphragm thing , will check that first
hopefully you'll figure it out.
Also did you say place or replace blue diaphragm along with the spring?
there was no mention of replacing it
I wanted to know what kind of oil you put. Because I find one in garage sale but don't know what oil uses.
Heavy duty 30w.
I use a drill on the flywheel nut to start this model. Any idea why it just spins and doesn’t start? It seem l8e it is not engaging the flywheel?
Are you using the adapter too or are you using an Allen to grab the flywheel?
I have the same problem
I was given this unit with no pull rope. Went and bought the drill adapter and it dosent start seems like not engaging also.
Adapter and allen key ?
I only have the adapter that goes in the drill into the jump start hole
None of the videos ive seen show using and allen key with the adapter.
BTW . I just found your channel. Liked, and subscribed.
Great video.
Mine got turned over and now it won't start. In fact it starts and dies immediately. Do I need to replace parts in the carb? Fresh gas? Please help.
There should be 2 screw on the front and then remove the recoil screws. There might be one more near the exhaust cover. I dont have this trimmer anymore so I'm going by the video. Try removing the spark plug and replave it. Some oil might have gotten on the plug and is keeping it from working.
I have had mine for many years and it never failed to start. It has no choke on it. I just pushed the gas bulb and pulled the rope off she went. Now I have a no start one so I'm here seeking an answer.
Servicing the carb is a good place to start.
I have a question for you...can you use the same metering diaphragms in 4 stroke engines as well as 2 stroke? I've always bought carb kits for 4 stroke engines. Thanks, waiting on your professional reply & advice!
Only If they look the same and have thr same length stem in the middle. The diaphragms don't care if the machine is 2 stroke or 4.

Thank you! Thats good to know!!! Your the man, love your vids I've learned so much from them!! I often recall your videos when I'm stuck on a project or repair. You've saved me on more than one occasion lol! Keep up the stellar work!!!!
You did get it running but it was bogging out when you reved it how do u fix that ?
It wasn't bogging down I was only revving the engine and yes its still working.
Thanks for the video.
I have the same one & it's all been hard to start, but recently it died on me & I thought... Well I've never added new oil, so without looking at the manual, I just filled it to the brim & put the cap on. It started spewing oil all over after a while. I drained all the oil & filled it up to just where the screw cap indicator shows it has oil on the stick.
Ran it for 10 minutes & died. Let it cool down, ran again another 10 minutes & it died? But it was still leaking oil... on the opposite side of where you put the oil?
Any suggestions?
clean the spark plug. And as for ther leak its coming out the breather into the air filter from the overfill.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Thanks. So it sounds like I over filled the oil & that's why it's still coming out of the overfill breather area?
Should I drain all oil, & take apart the air filter & wipe down all oil? Put back together & fill to correct oil amount & try again?
@@MatthewsFabrication yes that sounds like a good plan.
same exact motor i have...my issue is only runs full throttle and it hesitate to rev up
Thanks for the comment I appreciate it. Replace the diaphragm and you should be good to go
Any suggestions on how to rewind the pull string? Mine has come out and I can't find info on how to fix it anywhere. 🤔
Yes after winding the recoil I use 3 or 4 zip ties thru the housing while I reinstall it
mine got stuck out because the back plate had gotten rusty, i thought the spring was bad but turns out it just needed to be manually wound up and then lubed with PBlaster. works like new now
@@thisoldchevy2371 nice work.
Any suggestions for fixing a pull start that wont engage. I have checked and the pawl tabs on the fly wheel are gone.
How about using a cordless drill on the flywheel nut? Use it as an electric start.
That could work. I just found this trimmer sitting on the garbage bin. There was a crew that was doing the lawn. They couldn't start it and they just tossed it. It looks pretty clean and new. Let me check on price to see if it is worth it.
@@Solracotos excellent. Good luck with it.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I got a set of pawls that didn't quite fit,but it did start on the second pull and ran good. I don't expect the plastic pawls to last long so your idea of the drill bit adapter to start it is the way to go. I check and it is 15 bucks. Not too bad for a tossed trimmer.
@@Solracotos good and thanks again for the comment I appreciate it
My Troy bilt will start ok, but when I pull trigger it stalls. I can't locate the high and low adjustments for the carburetor. The 1 you demonstrated looks exactly like the 1 I have as well. Could it be the diaphragm as the why it won't engage in position 3?
this type of carb has limited adjustment so I wouldn't suggest trying. I didn't even try in my video. I would replace the metering diaphragm but replace the whole carb would be much easier.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE thank you
@@mikenelson1181 no problem.
I have the same trimmer and just repaired the carb; however, it now spits out oil from the air filter hose. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the comment. Yes it would seem that you have too much oil in the the crankcase. That's what happens whenever I overfill it just a but too much.
I actually emptied the oil and measured and added the recommended amount
Okay then the only other reason is massive blowby from the engine which is pressurizing the crankcase and forcing oil out the breather.
I bet those motors would be awesome a RC car or truck
probably.
Awesome where did you get the carburetor diaphragm from?
there's a link in the description if you're interested
Sir,
I prime, it wants to turn over then dies in less than a second.
If I prime, pull the cord and for that second it fires, I start pushing the prime button over and over it will have a very rough idle then I stop priming and it dies.
Will that Carbhub #95-526 diaphragm work for the *Lowes model TB 625 EC*
The model you worked on, I think was a model 685 in the video and looks exactly the same but.......And if not, is the Walbro carborator model # stamped on it, I can see the name but no #, but have not tore it apart yet.

check the fuel line and filter for any obstructions. Also there is a small metal screen inside the carbuertor where the line enters, there might be an obstruction behind the screen.

So, you got it starting, that's great. But then every time you hit the trigger the machine appeared to bog down, not rev up. How did you remedy that?
Thank you Ed Reynolds for the comment. It was revving up it just sounds different because it's a 4 cycle eninge. It yours doesn't rev up after this fix I'd probably look at adjusting the valves.
If it's bogging down, it's typically a blocked spark arrestor on the muffler. Is a gauze screen that prevent sparks shooting out of the exhaust system and starting grass fires. It gets full of soot/ carbon from the exhaust gases. You can remove it, or better, take it off and use a propane torch to burn off the soot and put ithe s po ar arrestor back on.
It's usually just 2 screws on your muffler
When you give it gas and it shuts off what could it be
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it. Try adjusting the carb to add more gas on throttle. Turn the H screw out about half a turn counterclockwise. Otherwise buy a replacement carb.
Question, I do not know why my trimmer doesn't work. I left it outside because my landlord put a lock on the storage closet outside and didn't want to store indoors because of the gas. Where should I start with reason it won't fire? Someone thought I should replace spark plug.
i have a few questions. what model is the trimmer? so it was working before you left it outside? how long was it left outside before you tried to start it? did it get rained on? Go ahead and replace the spark plug then check the air filter and make sure its not wet with gas or water, while it off the engine you might as well try and start it.

Even in this video when he holds the new diaphram up to the old one you can see that the outline of both are the same, but the metal disc is on the back as opposed to the front. So confusing. So multiple metering diaphram work, and it's not really important their installation orrientation?!
I was just holding the new diaphragm turned around . I should have had it facing the same way. Orientation is very important. Replace it the same way the old one came out.
Jay Leeberg
Sir, so your final conclusion is that this diaphragm does not look the same as the video's, but your weed eater looks exactly the same as the video's?
I have not even torn mine apart to even look, I figure it's the same weed eater and carb just rebranded with a different model number for each big box store the unit ends up in. I can't imagine the manufacturer would source different parts for different
model #'s, it would seem more cost effective to buy all the same parts, but who knows.
I have no option except to roll the dice.
So I just ordered the set of 15 off Amazon for $8. I even emailed Carbhub to inquire about model # of the troy bilt m/# but they could not answer what applications the carb ends up in, they said 90 day return though.

Thank you Soli Deogloria for the comment I appreciate your comment.
If you note the orientation of the outside shape of the gasket, the metal ring is on the opposite side when you are holding the two next to eachother. I found the same thing online too. I spent two hours searching for this stupid little part, and the only one that I could find that looks similar to mine, had the same outside shape, but flipper mirror image from mine.
I'm going to call these clowns (troy-bilt) tomorrow and get the part from them to make sure it's the same. Then I'm going to sell this stupid thing and buy a stihl 131. I cant stand having sub par equipment that takes THIS much effort to make even run.
As far ass the difference between mine and yours, it appears mine doesnt have a choke, whereas your does. Not sure if that would affect the metering diaphram orientation or even the shape as I dont even know what this part does. Good luck to you bud, and thank you both for the quick responses!
I just watched the video again. They are definitely a mirror image of eachother. Though, I dont think that matters as long as the metal disc faces the carburetor side, and not the square cover plate side.
