Absolutely hands down the most detailed and thought through video I have seen to date for any Troy-Bilt machine. Your step-by-step approach follows a logical sequence for troubleshooting. Your level of explanation is spot-on. I appreciate that there's no fluff in your videos you go step by step and move forward solidly. There's not a bunch of BS that I have to forward through. The dialogue is pertinent and your video quality is exceptional. A presentation of this caliber is not done in 12 and 1/2 minutes in your buddy's garage and recorded with an old cell phone. So I would just like to say thank you for taking the time to put this together . This is the only reference video I need regarding my Troy-Bilt
@@HomeGaragechannel I'm actually using your video as we speak. I think I have the idle dialed in but when I hit the throttle it immediately bogs down and dies. Any thoughts on that? ( As a sidebar.... the other fuel adjusting nut next to the one that you used to adjust the gas flow is that one for the high idle?
@@StephenWilhoite sure the L screw is for idle fuel adjustment AND revving up the engine, If it bogs, then turn the L screw counter clockwise about half turn. You might have to turn the idle up a bit to keep It from dying because of the extra fuel
I agree with you on that . Takes the time to explain and shows you how . Where I live no one wants to work on Troy Bilt , but that's ok to I want to learn how to fix my stuff !
Just came across your video. Great explanation of how to work on nearly all 2-cycle small engines. To answer your two questions at the end, yes, I have bought the tool kit and yes, I have spend the time along with this video and hundreds more on UA-cam to do my own repairs. I know it takes time but it's well worth it (satisfaction of accomplishment). Also, the cost to get small engines repaired these days is ridiculous. Guys like you and many others on UA-cam have turned me into a local hero when it comes to minor repairs and stuff like this. THANMKS !!!
I took a dremel tool and cut out a slot in the screws for hi and lo adjustments. Faster than buying the special screwdriver. The screws are recessed a bit. The metal surrounding the screws gets cut during the process of cutting a slot for a screwdriver. The metal is expendable. The security screw and the surrounding metal is there to keep the really low skilled home owner from screwing things up. You can adjust this to the point of damage to the engine. Lo speed is left closer to the engine. Hi speed is closer to the air filter. The new carburetor from a few sources is $20-25 if you happen to mess it up. Great video!! Very methodical! Big help!!
Just bought the tools tonight. I watched a few videos to figure this thing out, and this one is definitely the most thorough so I appreciate that. Hopefully I can get this thing going asap. Thanks for the info and I've subscribed for more 👌
Thanks good description on repair I'm a do it yourself kinda guy love tinkering with engines I've got a troybilt trimmer like this a different model . I'll be trying some of your info to make it run better I find a lot of people throw things out cause they won't start most times if you change gas clean plug and filter they will start people don't mantaine lawn equipment thanks again very informative video!
I work on these trimmers pretty much daily. What I have found to almost always be wrong with the carb is either the metering diaphragm or the check valve. I also have the carb adjustment tool kit that I use and it was a life saver.
This is a great video. I purchased the special tool for the adjustments. But I like to tinker with things and like I said this video give me even more confidence in doing the job. Thank you
Thanks for the video! I have more than one gas powered machine so I bought the set of 6 tools for under $10 w/ free ship. More often than not, taking it to be repaired just once will cost almost as much as replacing it. Watch a few of these repair videos to get a basic understanding of how these things work and you can confidently do most of these repair tasks. You can learn, you have the time so stop fuming and get at it. Don't let yourself be defeated by an inanimate machine.
In all my years the literal worst thing is storing something with an empty tank. Put stabil in it and fresh fuel and store with a full tank. Then moisture won't get in the carb or tank. Your video was absolutely perfect advice up to that point and the only thing that I would advise further.
Thanks for this video. I tried what was said on the video and got my Weed whacker working again. It had gotten oil in the carb and would not start. Cleaning the carb, as shown, worked great. Thanks, Roger
I would buy the the tool if I need it I buy it once and dun and having the right tools make the job easier I hate rigging stuff it's just another step. Thanks for all the great video's.
Just bought a special set of tools to adjust the carb. My problem now is a friend broke off my choke lever and I have not been able to find an exact replacement. Its a 4 cycle Craftsman and even with the model number no one seems to have it. I have fabricated one that semi-works. Anyway thanks for the fixing video's. Stay safe.
Another great video , you did a great job detailing what you were doing. Now to answer your question about the tool , I ve done front end alignments for years and I of course that was years ago but I would get all of them, you never know when you'll need them. Besides if I keep watching your videos there no telling what I can learn from you. At least I can try to repair. Thanks again for sharing your experience ! From: Mobile Alabama
I would buy the special tools, here's why. i have to learn this skill only once, i have to pay for special tools only once (if high quality), and it will pay for itself on the long run.
I just fixed mine started by replacing the carburetor but that was not it. For those reading the comments, check the .070 x 1.864 o-ring located on the crankshaft endcap. If it is broke there is no vacuum to pull in the fuel. Good luck!
I grew up with 3 brothers and I try to do somethings for myself when it is seems doable for me. Not always successful, but I try. I would buy the tools. My primer button is busted and I have had the TB for a period of time, so I bought the entire carb kit for like $18. I would buy the adjustment tool. My theory is, if it isn't running now, I have nothing to lose by trying to fix it myself. Of course, in the video you make it look simple.
This video really helped. I can finally use my weed eater again. The tiny round filter is missing from mine. It seems the repair guy from the last time didn't put it back after he was done.
as a novice in small engines i bought the set of tools i have always learned best by hands on and it has served me pretty well.thanks this video was helpful to an old man
Nice job: I have thousands upon thousands of dollars in tools. For a home owner to spend money on tools that he may use once does not pay. Also most people don't know how to adjust carbs. Thanks for this excellent video.
Hi ,this boston Jim .I'm a tool guy yes I would buy the kit of tools the average person would just buy a new trimmer I've fixed many of them and I appreciate your videos thank you once again
I never liked those troybilt trimmers i remember they one in a 4 stroke version my neighbor bought one very unbalanced very heavy I don't think they sold that well either. Good Job on the fix. See you next week. Stay Safe. Stay Healthy. Have a great weekend!!!
Your video was very helpful and very well done, thank you. Just changed the supply fuel line(which is maybe 5 years old and left fuel in it last winter) it would start and idle but not run very long at operating speed. Cut the old fuel line open at spot where it goes into fuel tank. Line was swollen its intire length and as a result where it went thru the fuel tank it was swollen and the inside of the fuel line nearly closed off. Hoping this is the culprit.
@@HomeGaragechannel it ran strong without dying thru a couple of tanks of gas. I about positive the fuel line swelled shut or nearly shut. I think I need to adjust mixture screws a little. Should have tools Wedensday.
Great video. I would buy the tools and do the repair myself, mainly because I cannot be sure that the mechanic really knows what he is doing. I write from experience with repairs to a Mantis tiller that has a similar carb and similar problems.
You did a great job of explaining it all, but I’m STILL not sure a complete newbie (like myself) would be sure about the repair, sooo, I’d probably get a repair shop to do it, IF I could find someone to do it. Some areas are bereft of knowledgeable mechanics, from small jobs to big ones.
Why pass up an opportunity to become knowledgeable and experienced and save your hard-earned money. If you can remove and replace a light bulb you will be able to remove and replace the fasteners on your machine.
Done!!! Brosef!!! You are him sir… thank you, I’m super hardheaded, and yes could have definitely gone and grabbed a trimmer and parted this one, but that determination and stubbornness my wife yells at me about😂😂😂 wouldn’t let it go, I was not going to be beat!!! Hahaha weed eater is almost 12yrs old now and hasn’t given up on me yet!!! Next round of beers is to you sir!! Cheers😂😂😂🍺🍻🍺 thank you!
Oh man. I have this one too. Bought it with no head on fb for 10 bucks. Had it running in 2 mins but when I went to clean the carb I losses the dang spring! Sooo not i gotta buy a carb and shaft attachment. Will end up being a 60 dollar machine instead of a 40 like I'd hoped.
The tools are reasonably priced and if you repair the 2 cycle carbs, Just do it. I got an 11 piece set for less than twenty dollars that includes brushes and wire cleaners that works for all carbs now on the market that I've seen. They have already paid for themselves a dozen times over. Also, I've seen new carbs on line that come with fuel line, filter and adjusting tool. BTW, the carb I just spoke of cost less than fifteen dollars. Fighting with the screws is aggravation nobody needs.
I used to pay money to get my snowblower and Lawn Equipment repaired until I finally went on UA-cam and started to learn how to repair them and buy some of the tools I needed. Now I never go to the repair shop. So buy higher grade gas and seafoam Plus empty the tanks when I store them and run them dry.
I got the special adjusting tools because its easier that trying to make up something and they are cheap. I got a 4cycle Troybilt last year on a garbage can with all the paper work I took it home and it started right up and the problem was the homeowner couldnt string the unit and gave up.
Well, I'll tell you what I'm trying to do. I bought the tool kit, and have watched several videos to help me get my POS Troy Built TB35 EC running. It's nearly new. Worked great out of the box, but now won't run when not in choke. I've tried adjusting the carb. It runs like a scalded dog, but won't idle. I'll keep playing with it. If I get too PO'd, I'll take it in and see if my local small engine guy can get it running.
Have you inspected the metering diaphragm? A trimmer that won't idle but run at full speed would indicate a diaphragm that's not performing like it should and might need to be replaced.
@@HomeGaragechannel I haven't broke the carb down yet. I kept playing with the adjustment screws and finally got it running--though the idle still needs some fine-tuning. I'll have at it again today. If that doesn't work, I'll certainly take your advice.
The same thing happend me,I didn't want to pay €12 for the adjusting tool so I got a junior hacksaw and cut a slot in the screw then came alons with flat head screwdriver and that fixed it. I guess the only bad thing was that I had kind of cut a small part of the cover I didn't mind.
I'm very mechanical so I bought a set already of special tools for small engines but I would expect the average person to just pay someone to fix it thanks for your videos
Thanks for sharing! I have 2 questions. 1.can the metering diaphram be purchased individually? 2. My Troybilt 574EC carburettor does not have a Hi/Lo air/fuel adjustment. Could I fit a carburettor like the one on your model? Thanks
yes the metering diaphram can be purchase by itself. i don't know about retrofitting a different carb because i have never done one. if i had to guess then i'm sure it can be done.
No need for special tools. You already have to take the carb. off to work on it. Beforehand, place the carb. In a vice, adjusting screws up. Place cloth, cardboard, etc. around the carb to keep from damaging it. Then cut across the adjusting screws with a hacksaw. By doing so, you create slots for a flat blade screwdriver to adjust them. I never even use a vise. But if you try this, be careful. The hacksaw cuts flesh a lot easier that it does metal 😂. I speak from experience. When finished, spray metal shavings off with carb. cleaner, brake cleaner, or an air nozzle. Then do you carb. repairs and replace carb.
Keep the videos coming. Unfortunately, I agree with your assessment. MTD, Troy Bilt and snapper seem to have gone down in quality. However, my previous purchases of Stihl, Echo and Toro from reputable outdoor equipment store are still going strong. Provided that basic maintenance occurs, as you have outlined several times in your videos.
What is the little blue plastic part for- does it have name? Mine is missing. Maybe that is why mine won’t start? The blue piece is in the video when you put gas in the carburetor at the very beginning of the video?
Personally it's a carb issue. next time run it, let it get hot and then stop it. If it doesn't start, try putting some fuel in the carbs throat and if it starts, or tries to start, it's a fuel issue from the carb. IF it doesn't start let me know.
Special tool but didn't know which one from Pac Man to Single D is what I need and hopefully will starts my Troy-bilt weed eater like new only used less then few times.
Hello, I bought a replacement carb for a string trimmer TB90BC but the carb came with all three adjustment screws turned in, could you suggest a starting place? I have tried turning all three out 1 turn then making adjustments, but the best I get it is turning over for 2 seconds. Any thoughts would be great. Dan
I would buy whatever tools that i would need to maintain my trimmer myself. And I have bought a kit of small engine adjusting tools for trimmers and chainsaws.
I service my own equipment and do spring tuneups every year and keep a chart for my equipment … I renew my trimmer and blower every few years unless new models are not a good upgrade
I would absolutely buy the tools. Even if I lean it out to hell and blow it up. Buying a new $79 trimmer is more bang for my buck than paying a lawn equipment mechanic over and over.
I fixed one of these recently but dang, do these things shake! Ive never used one that shook so bad at idle. Once you press the trigger its not so bad but not matter how much i adjusted, it either died or still shook.
I just did a same thing that video show me same model weed whacked ,it ran for few minutes and it shut off . Can you please tell me why thank you in advance
Sure questions first. Did you replace the fuel lines? Is the fuel filter still connected to the line in the tank? Did you done compression test? Usually if the engine dies after starting and running for awhile it its running out of fuel so the carb might need to be adjusted for more fuel. You might need to replace the carb. Try replacing the gas cap.
First thank you for kindly respond my problem to answer your questions, no I didn’t replaced any fuel lines and yes the fuel filter still connect to the line , no I did not check engine compression and why that have anything to do with a fuel cap? Thank you again
Realistically, getting the correct metering diaphragm for that carb. is easier said than done. I had a nice Hitachi RB24EAP and just decided to sell it to a tinkerer. A lithium battery blower si much simpler and about $100-130 new. Recharge and forget ethanol-free fuel and oil mixing, carb tweaking, noise, and the little things a 2-cycle engine annoys you with. There is no dealer of ethanol-free gas in Richmond, VA... a state capital. Think that over and consider it may be time to abandon 2-cycle blowers and trimmers, at least. Stihl has a small battery powered chainsaw for small limbs (homeowner size) and when graphene batteries arrive... lithium may fade away, as well.
not sure what carb it is but I know the Zama;s you are not suppose to blow air into the passages as there are check valves and will be damaged, even using carb cleaner they say spray at an angle around holes and poke no wires into passages of course I learned this after I had done what I usually do with other carbs! Put it back on my leaf blower got it running but just for a minute I will see if I can tune it out tomorrow, I already ordered another carb as I fear the worst.
why doesn't the manual or troybilt website have information on making carburetor adjustments? I know lots of guys who just throw their whole trimmer away and buy a new one because they have no idea they can adjust the carburetor.
Hey, a friend just gave me his TB trimmer b/c he says it won't run... fuel goes through the bulb & into the tank just fine; however, it won't start, even by putting fuel directly into the carb'...I grounded the plug to the block & No Spark!?! How can I tell if my challenge is the ignition module OR Stop switch??
Do you have a source for a carburetor rebuild kit for this Troy Bilt Trimmer (TB32EC)? I have the exact same trimmer. All the online sources are too nebulous regarding the parts in their kits.
Hey there, I'm trying to get my weed whacker started, and I have replaced the carb, fuel lines, fuel pump and have tested for spark. For fuel I am using pre mixed 40:1 two stroke fuel. I put fuel in the throat of the carb, and nothing happens. Could you in any chance give me some advice? Thanks!
Surw. If you have spark and you're putting fuel into the carbs throat and it still won't start then try replacing the spark plug. If thats okay then the engine might be low on compression so it won't start. Test by using a compression tester.
I have a Troy bilt tb35ce and I did a deep cleaning yesterday plus I changed the diaphragm and I found out the spark plug always is soaking in gas so what can I do for reduce the gas amount I the carburetor Please help me with this issue Thank you Hector

Hi. My wife bought an Efco MultiMate trimmer head with weed wacker and hedge trimmer attachments, in an auction. She told me about it, but I thought it would be a more common brand. I have been trying to figure it out, but there is no spark. Ive tried to diagnose, but it is so enclosed I'm afraid ill never get it back together if I take it all apart. Any suggestions? Ive tried a new plug, checking plug wire, kill switch, lost. -Dan
I have a Troy Bilt TB415CS 4 cycle that I had to replace the pull rope. After replacing it and reassembling the unit I noticed that the trimmer would rotate counter clockwise not clockwise. It did start and run BUT something happened and it quit running. Pulling on the rope offered no resistance. The flywheel spun freely. Oh Oh I thought. Key time. Took it apart and yes the key was sheared. Now I can't find a key for it. Went to Troy Bilt and Ebay but no keys. I could see nothing that would have made the key shear. The engine turned just fine with compression. Lost as to what happened. I thought I had the rope wound wrong and the engine ran backwards breaking the key. Do you know if this trimmer runs counter clockwise like yours does in the video? Thank you.

Oh man. I have this one too. Bought it with no head on fb for 10 bucks. Had it running in 2 mins but when I went to clean the carb I losses the dang spring! Sooo not i gotta buy a carb and shaft attachment. Will end up being a 60 dollar machine instead of a 40 like I'd hoped.
thats a shame but you still got a good deal. thanks for the comment.
You are correct. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I have a question though, if somebody doesn't want to get the tools and fix it themselves, why are they watching this video to begin with? 🤔
I’d take my dremel to that mf carburetor is what I would do, lol
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
That’s what i do! Just did it again today on a Jonsered leaf blower."
EXACTLY! F the EPA and their bullshit pacman tool.
@@HomeGaragechannel iiu
did that today.
I used to pay money to get my snowblower and Lawn Equipment repaired until I finally went on UA-cam and started to learn how to repair them and buy some of the tools I needed. Now I never go to the repair shop. So buy higher grade gas and seafoam Plus empty the tanks when I store them and run them dry.
man you are ahead of the game. excellent work and thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
I got the special adjusting tools because its easier that trying to make up something and they are cheap. I got a 4cycle Troybilt last year on a garbage can with all the paper work I took it home and it started right up and the problem was the homeowner couldnt string the unit and gave up.
nice grab. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Well, I'll tell you what I'm trying to do.
@@pokey5428 thank you for the update
The same thing happend me,I didn't want to pay €12 for the adjusting tool so I got a junior hacksaw and cut a slot in the screw then came alons with flat head screwdriver and that fixed it. I guess the only bad thing was that I had kind of cut a small part of the cover I didn't mind.
It's happened to me before. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
You adjusted the screw closest to the engine. What is the other for and how do you adjust it?
Its for full throttle adjustment. To adjust it squeeze the trigger and turn it till it runs at its best.
I'd buy the special tools to adjust the carburetor because I've never known when I'll need them again in the future !
You are absolutely right. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Having being a wrench since the 60's I would buy.
thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I'm very mechanical so I bought a set already of special tools for small engines but I would expect the average person to just pay someone to fix it thanks for your videos
Great point!
So, after many comments, we have not mentioned the item# or part # of this 'special tool'? What is it and where was it ordered from? thnnx
there is no part number for this special tool. simply search for "single D" carb tool on Amazon
I would definitely do it if were my own trimmer but if its not mine I would have to ask permission from the owner.
I'd buy wrenches because I like wrench-n! Got a question, how many turns out are the 2 carburetor screws supposed be in, or factory settings? THX.
i apologize but I've never counted. if i had to guess i would set it to 1.5 turns out to start
Thanks cause mine died while trimming my yard. Now I know how to do this
good luck Stephen Berry
I prefer to try and fix something myself before paying someone else to do it! I enjoy learning new things! So I would buy the tools.
Excellent answer me too
Keep the videos coming.
Thank you Jim America I appreciate your comment and you're experience.
It is all about getting the right balance on the tune it is not easy.
You are absolutely correct about that
I paid for a set to work on my own equipment and now that I am getting into working on small engines.
Nice work. The are definitely worth it
What is the little blue plastic part for- does it have name? Mine is missing. Maybe that is why mine won’t start? The blue piece is in the video when you put gas in the carburetor at the very beginning of the video?
you mean the blue choke lever? Yes you need it. Otherwise to start it, you'll need to put fuel into the carbs inlet each time.
Great video. Mine starts and runs great the first time. If I shut off, this bad boy isn’t starting for hours. Any thoughts?
Dan
I would turn the 2 fuel adjustment screws out 2 full revolutions and the idle screw I would turn it out till 3 turns
I would buy whatever tools that i would need to maintain my trimmer myself. And I have bought a kit of small engine adjusting tools for trimmers and chainsaws.
you are ahead of the class already. you stand to save yourself a lot of money. Good work.
@@HomeGaragechannel thank you very much.

If I could get the tools to adjust it myself, that's what I would do. And of course I would look up videos to help me out! 😜
Smart thinking. Me too.
Excellent Video, with Great Detail. Thx 👍👍
Glad you liked it!
Xcellent video
Lots of good tips
I learnt good tips

I service my own equipment and do spring tuneups every year and keep a chart for my equipment … I renew my trimmer and blower every few years unless new models are not a good upgrade
Thank you Fred D. seems like you're on top of your maintenance schedule.
Well to be honest since I'm watching this I'm probably going to buy the tool lol 😂
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
I would absolutely buy the tools. Even if I lean it out to hell and blow it up. Buying a new $79 trimmer is more bang for my buck than paying a lawn equipment mechanic over and over.
You are absolutely correct
I fixed one of these recently but dang, do these things shake! Ive never used one that shook so bad at idle. Once you press the trigger its not so bad but not matter how much i adjusted, it either died or still shook.
Yes they can be unbalanced sometime
Wow that's sucks that they don't have non ethanol fuel there. I wasn't aware that was a problem .
I would get the tools. Nice video, very detailed
thank you Chuck Davis.
not sure what carb it is but I know the Zama;s you are not suppose to blow air into the passages as there are check valves and will be damaged, even using carb cleaner they say spray at an angle around holes and poke no wires into passages of course I learned this after I had done what I usually do with other carbs! Put it back on my leaf blower got it running but just for a minute I will see if I can tune it out tomorrow, I already ordered another carb as I fear the worst.
thanks James
why doesn't the manual or troybilt website have information on making carburetor adjustments? I know lots of guys who just throw their whole trimmer away and buy a new one because they have no idea they can adjust the carburetor.
because they don't want you to make "any" adjustment to them.
Yes, no oil in gas, thought that myself a good check to add anybody eliminate list before attempting to start.
Do you have a source for a carburetor rebuild kit for this Troy Bilt Trimmer (TB32EC)? I have the exact same trimmer. All the online sources are too nebulous regarding the parts in their kits.
no I don't , I only ever replace the metering diaphragm and that's it. I haven't bought a rebuild kit in a long time.
Home Garage I'll try it. Thanks for the reply!

I have a Troy bilt tb35ce and I did a deep cleaning yesterday plus I changed the diaphragm and I found out the spark plug always is soaking in gas so what can I do for reduce the gas amount I the carburetor
Please help me with this issue
Thank you
Hector
you can try and adjust the fuel screws to reduce the amount fuel. However doing that will affect how it starts and runs.
I would figure out a way to adjust with out special tools unless I see that I will be using those special
More than a few times.
You know before I bought the tools I really don't use them that often. I usually just other things work to adjust the carb
2019 craftsman25cc 2 in 1 trimmer head curved shaft , do u have a video on restringing this particular weed eater? it has fixed line and bump feed aswell???
hmm. I'll have to look but I don't think so.
-Dan
sure try taking off the on off switch from the front handle and disconnect one of the wires, from it, and see it changes.
I can’t help but noticed that the trimmer has a common lawn mower spark plug installed instead of the recommended Champion RDJ7J.
wow! great eye. yes someone put a mower plug in it. I'll change it later. thank you for the comment I appreciate it
Where do you buy the metering diaphragm and check valve if you can't find them on Ebay or Amazon?

nice reasoning
Thank you.
sorry I have no way of know, without having one in front of me.
