For Sale is an easy to grasp concept of flipping houses. It is also really easy to jump right in and learn as you go, and short enough that most people want to play again after they fully understand it.
Bohnanza. Every person I know that likes monopoly likes trading and negotiating. Any game I teach to my Dad (who enjoys monopoly) that has some form of money he always asks if he can trade or negotiate with the other players.
I don’t like monopoly despite playing it endlessly growing up with everyone in the neighborhood…..somehow “negotiation” never seemed to be part of it. I think it might have been less miserable if it was.
This was really interesting! My wife and I started to get back into board games, and we were the kind of people that grew up on Monopoly, Scrabble, and assorted mostly mass-market games. Even though it doesn't respect my time, I return to Monopoly on rare occasions and have fun with it. I had been away from board games for so long, and never really paid any attention to what was really out there. This has all changed, and my wife and I have now made board gaming a weekly thing. We love it! Thanks for putting this list together, can't wait to check these out.
I would add Power Grid to this. Similar auctions to build up your areas, you try to monopolize areas of the map, and its all about spending money to make even more money
Similar to Acquire, the first game that came to mind was Foundations of Rome (or upcoming Foundations of Metropolis). Both games involve buying up properties (sometimes property you're opponents want), managing money/income, and placing out buildings. FoR has more decisions to consider on your turn and strategy so there is a little bump up in complexity, but it still has quick snappy turns for the most part.
Waterfall Park captures that feeling of making deals with other players quite well.. and that everything is for sale and worth something. Highly recommend for Monopoly players. Also super easy.
I know it's not back in print again just yet, but Lords of Vegas? Buying, developing, and eventually monopolizing property, getting huge sums of cash, a high degree of high-stakes randomness that lead to emotional highs and lows, tons of dice rolling, and the ability to freely trade with other players that nobody will EVER do until they're one turn away from losing the game. It's basically Monopoly, but with player agency, a turn limit, and a fun theme. It's the perfect Monopoly replacement!
I think Settlers of Catan is a great option for people who enjoy Monopoly. The only reason I don't play it much these days is because of how much I played it during it's heyday. Especially if the negotiating, and building up a property is the big appeal of Monopoly to people. Settlers is classic worth checking out.
Gigamic Marrakesh is a perfect connection too: closed economy with money exchange, 45s rules, roll and move BUT fun and interesting decisions since you decide the direction before you roll. The tactile aspect helps a lot obviously :)
I would think the big mechanisms that Monopoly players would be drawn to would be Negotiation and Set Collection. Those mechanisms immediately lead to two gateway classics: Catan and Ticket to Ride.
Although I don't like Catan, it really is close to Monopoly in feel. The dice rolling, trading, building, negotiating. Not many other games do these things.
Without a doubt (in my opinion) the best game to replace monopoly is Lords of Vegas. Also, loving this concept hopefully more videos are coming soon =)
A good comparable game: New York 1901. It has real estate, and building on that real estate. I'm not big on Monopoly. But the games mentioned here are good choices...
Anyone who thinks that Acquire is too mathy should stay away from Alhambra. I taught the latter to a group at a library game day and one girl said to her friend "I feel like I'm doing my math homework". 😃
Hope you're doing 'Talisman' soon. That's a tough one if you are also trying to find games that are not like 70$+ and available today... and trying to find games with most of what Talisman gives and not just one aspect (fighting, magic, exploration, leveling up)
@@gee355Art It's rather easy to find games that give some aspects of talisman - which is what this series seems to do, but if you're looking for most of the aspects just without the luck, turns where nothing happens and long elimination game - then sadly it's problematic to find an affordable available option... wish there was one. I would love to see a 'Restoration Games' version of Talisman.
My pick/vote would be for Talisman. So many themes (fantasy, Batman, Harry Potter, kingdom hearts). Roll and move, landing on/activating squares, collecting money. Great game as a stepping stone from monopoly to more thematic hobby games =)
I love teaching Monopoly people Eric Lang's The Godfather: Corleone's Empire There is plenty of take that, your collecting money and trying to control different areas of the city. I think it goes over well for these Monopoly people.
Games like... The Shamelist Edition 😅 Camel Up is a good alternative. I'd maybe add Metropolis (often called The City) by Tom Lehmann. Adds that notion of building different types of buildings, and has money. And it's a far cousin of Race/Roll for the Galaxy, which are evergreens.
I like Monopoly - but never a game I’d play on a game night. It’s a game to play while chatting - on your turn roll the dice and maybe if you’re lucky you get to make a decision - then you carry on chatting till it’s your turn again. Oh and you also get to make deals with people. The perfect replacement for that feel is Catan. Again, not a game I’d want to play on game night, but for sitting around with family chatting, rolling dice and sometimes getting to do something - and with making deals - Catan is a replacement - and a much shorter and better game than Monopoly.
Good call on Machi Koro, but I strongly suggest Machi Koro 2. It improves on the original in many ways to the point that I honestly am surprised the original still is pushed to be sold. Heck many still dont even know MK2 even exists. We got rid of our original game.
I really don’t like the landmarks. In most games that kind of mechanic would give really interesting, strategy defining bonus/cards. Instead they’re really boring or even help the other players.
Hmmm… the most important mechanic of Monopoly to me is negotiation, and the idea of smart deals. I’m the Boss and Chinatown/Waterfall Park are probably the best alternatives to monopoly. And then maybe QE and Rich and the Good.
The point of Monopoly though is that one person gets wealthy while everyone else goes bankrupt and destitute. It was designed as a commentary on capitalism. Bit of hypocrisy that it's then owned by a massive corporation and has made billions of dollars for them.
For Sale is an easy to grasp concept of flipping houses. It is also really easy to jump right in and learn as you go, and short enough that most people want to play again after they fully understand it.

Which expansion is best? It’s a good game but it needs a little bit more.
Chinatown/Waterfall Park is always my first recommendation for people who like the trading and human interaction of monopoly
Yup, best direct replacement. I’m the boss too.

100% Raccoon Tycoon
came here to say this
Ditto
Great game that’s easily broken by people causing our group to no longer play it. :(
Really great idea though. It can be fantastic.
@@SmoothGummi how can it be broken?
@@gabtrat9091 every player can just force auctions over and over. It really ruins the exoerience.
I would add Power Grid to this. Similar auctions to build up your areas, you try to monopolize areas of the map, and its all about spending money to make even more money
Lords of Vegas
Take aquire and monopoly and you get Lords of Vegas. It's my go to for people who like Monopoly and win my being a trading shark.
While this is the first I thought of too, I think it’s more complicated than what they were going for here.
Thats my go too when i wanna play something like monoply
This has to be the first time someone did a comparison video to monopoly and DIDNT mention “for sale”. Interesting list for sure!
Just want to say how much I enjoy this mini series. Hope to see more. Thanks and keep up the great work!

At 13:15, I see Ra must be more challenging and cut throat than I realised. Is the wearing of Pampers Training Underwear a necessary add-on?
Lords of Vegas would be my pick. Acquire is good too
I'd go For Sale, Chinatown and Power Grid
I would think the big mechanisms that Monopoly players would be drawn to would be Negotiation and Set Collection. Those mechanisms immediately lead to two gateway classics: Catan and Ticket to Ride.

I don’t think Catan is a great negotiation game compared to Chinatown or I’m the Boss
@@Ad3tryeah but OTOH they're far from being a package of multiple things like catan
What about laying traps and watching your friend fall into them? Like Marrakech
@@Ad3trAh, but Monopoly is not a great negotiation game either! :D
Without a doubt (in my opinion) the best game to replace monopoly is Lords of Vegas.

Options that came to my mind were, Splendor, Sunrise Lane, Yspahan, and World Wonders.
If people like roll and move, and a lot of people do, probably the best roll and move in existsnce is Jamaica
Who doesn’t know Wonder Woman? Been around for many decades.
The game in my collection that I think of as my monopoly alternative is Great Western Trail
A good comparable game: New York 1901. It has real estate, and building on that real estate.

Can you do a pick six with Clue? Would love to hear your suggestions.
Camel Up! Yes! A hard agree from me. I wouldn't have thought of it, but that's a perfect choice, Zee.
Please, make pick 6 like Mage Knight. I really need more games like Mage Knight to play)
Mine are the following:
For Sale - property and auction and money
Puerto Rico
Happy City is a great one for younger players
Camel Up is a good one.
I would LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to see a Pick 6 alternatives to Uno.
Although Uno Flip is my go-to at the moment.
Dice tower needs more Zee & Joey
Great lists guys, but was For Sale in consideration for either of you? I'm surprised not to see it here.
Or maybe even QE!
You went back to Acquire, so I would go for Careers. It has so many facets that are also in more modern games.
There’s not really any trading and the real estate theme is a little thin. It’s more of a quick auction game
Jamaica, a race, dice , and the most money wins!
My pick/vote would be for Talisman. So many themes (fantasy, Batman, Harry Potter, kingdom hearts). Roll and move, landing on/activating squares, collecting money. Great game as a stepping stone from monopoly to more thematic hobby games =)
A choir? I suppose that's an alternative way to spend time. But what if you can't sing? ;)
Totopoly would be a good alternative, similar vintage, but less well known.
I love teaching Monopoly people Eric Lang's The Godfather: Corleone's Empire

Please do one of these for Risk
Wealth of nations is a step up more fun and doesn't last forever
How did you guys know i was looking for monopoly alrernatives 😅
For Sale / Modern Art
Sunrise Lane / Ticket to Ride
Carcassonne / Acquire
/thread
Cape May was left off the list.

💯 agree Machi Koro 2 is great. A top fav. Amongst our gaming group🎉
Most mainstream competitive sports use victory points, so I suppose it's not more distant of a concept than money to most people 🙂
Before watching i am position For Sale is going to be there, and it should cause its an amazing game
Power grid.
Acquire would be my first choice! It's a great game 9/10. I would also second Machi Koro, 7/10 for me.
Hmmm… the most important mechanic of Monopoly to me is negotiation, and the idea of smart deals. I’m the Boss and Chinatown/Waterfall Park are probably the best alternatives to monopoly. And then maybe QE and Rich and the Good.
Nah. The 2 modern games that sum up the good aspects from Monopoly are Jamaica (roll and move with player interaction) and Chinatown (negotiation).
I would pick Iki
Cape May reminds me of a much better monopoly
I thought about RA.
The type of list will never find its intended viewer.
Feel free to share it so that it does!
The point of Monopoly though is that one person gets wealthy while everyone else goes bankrupt and destitute.
It was designed as a commentary on capitalism. Bit of hypocrisy that it's then owned by a massive corporation and has made billions of dollars for them.
And even more ironically, the corporation stole the idea from the original designer, who only got a pittance for her idea.
Well, according to every single non-gamer, _all_ games are like Monopoly. Or that's what they seem to believe. 😂
Monopoly deal card game
Why do you have the Russian version of Machi Koro in your video? 😂
chinatown
how to turn me off six games! lol
Raccoon Tycoon
I had the same thought. Or Lizard Wizard. 😊
