      They both have some wax and some oil, traditionally when we refer to wax based it just means there is more wax. The wax based (luminance, derwent drawing, prismacolor etc) are generally creamier and more opaque than the oil based (like polychromos), but don't hold a fine tip as well because the lead is so much softer. I personally combine both wax and oil based pencils in most of my work :)

      Great Video I have been using Prismacolor for a very long time and never could pull off anything spectacular Always had so much wax bloom and they just did not blend to well to me. I was thinking maybe it was me Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Then there is the whole Pencil Breaking thing I went through so many Pencil Sharpeners Thinking it was the Sharpener. Then I found your videos and realized I was not alone I realized that Prismacolor pencils are not very good. So after watching this Video I ordered these on Amazon along with the Procolurs. These arrived first I tried them out OMG what a difference These Pencils are amazing They blend so well not to mention it was nice to be able to sharpen a color pencil without it breaking. I cant wait till next month to try my Procolurs. Sorry for the Essay just wanted to share my Story.

      @@Lachri ... the Procolour are just a rebranding of the Derwent Studio & Artist pencils. They contain clay, mixed with oil & wax.
      The Drawing Pencils are primarily wax. However, most of their colors will be the foundation of the Derwent Light Fast brand's colors which will be primarily oil based pencils & lightfast (as their name suggests).
      Kinda exciting. Combining the Polychromos w/ the Derwent Lightfast (throw in the Pablo & Lyra Polycolor) & Oil based color pencils can go toe to toe with any of the Wax based pencils, as their will be more oil based that are lightfast vs. the Wax brands.
      As of now Wax has Luminance (the best Wax), Prisma (some colors you just can't do without), Procolour (aka Studio/Artist) and the Derwent Drawing Pencils, as their best brands. Luminance & Drawing & Procolour being the best wax brands with majority lightfast to some degree.
      Obviously you can combine the two types when blending normally or with OMS. However, if your using the new blending method from BrushAndPencil, oil is your best bet (at least for the majority of layers blended, especially in early stages).

    As a guy with about 400 Prismacolors I'm working through until I upgrade (I thought all colored pencils broke a lot) if they break where the lead comes out in one piece like you mentioned a dab of super glue works great and you can sharpen right through it. I just discovered your channel today when looking to get back into traditional art which I left for digital stuff about four years ago. I love what one can do with digital, but not having that tangible thing in your hands when your done is very unsatisfying.

    I'm reminded of the thing about color pretty much every time I do a project that involves color. A funny thing is, when I work from photos that I took outdoors, I notice unexpected colors like hints of blues and purples in rocks and animals' fur. I don't know if it's because I live in San Diego and the sun is always shining on everything or if it's because I take most of my reference photos with my phone and it causes those colors to appear.

    I know I'm very late to this video, but I recently bought the set of 24 Derwent Drawing pencils thanks to your strong endorsement of them in some other videos of yours on Patreon, which I am a member of.
    I'm a professional portrait artist, but I usually work in pastels, oils, or carbon pencils. I love carbon pencils for grayscale figure drawing because the black is so rich, you can get wonderful gradations in value with the right touch, and no shine from burnishing the way graphite does.
    Anyway, I'm recovering from an ileostomy, which is very major abdominal surgery with a very long recovery time of 6 months to a year, so I got some colored pencils so I could still do art in my recovery recliner without making a massive mess or being stuck only being able to create carbon pencil drawings for the next year.
    Because I often sell my work while other pieces end up on my walls, my dad's walls, or my son's walls, lightfastness is hugely important.
    I went with the full sets of Luminance and Polychromos (I labeled the fugitive Polychromos with tape on the ends so they're easy to identity and keep them separate from the ones that pass the lightfast test), but once I heard you rave about the Derwent Drawing pencils, especially for portraits, I had to get them, too. I originally went with Luminance and Derwent Lightfast, but the Lightfast set was weirdly imbalanced, in my opinion, so I returned them for the Polychromos. I bought the Lightfast pencils that I liked open stock that fill in gaps of colors from the other two sets.
    The Derwent Drawing set has absolutely wonderful natural tones, perfect for portraits. The cores are really strudy and sharpen to a really fine point. I also really appreciate how thick the cores are.
    I'm so glad I came across your channel when I was researching. I was planning ahead before the surgery so I'd be already set up for when it was done and I was back home. I had everything I needed except for the Derwent Drawing, which just came a few days ago. Really great pencils. Thank you so much for your detailed reviews that make sense for both beginners and professionals. That's a tough balancing act that you pull off exceptionally well!
    Edit: I also just ordered a full set of Rembrandt Lyras that should arrive Tuesday. I've racked up quite the collection in the span of a month. I also have some Pablos and Holbeins open stock. I meant for this to be a temporary thing, but I've fallen in love with the medium so I now plan on using them even after I'm healed.

    I have a set of those too they are very nice . I didn't use them a lot because they make very few shades . I checked some of your old videos and i saw that you use caran d'ache luminance white for highlights usually . You can use the white from this set too it's ultra opaque maybe more than luminance and in my country is far cheaper . Some shop here sell luminance pencil for like 6 € each 😑 . I usually use Polychromos , prisma , some luminance too but these have very uncommon shades that i can't find in the other sets .

    Here in the UK Derwent is considered low to mid range and more for "crafters" rather than Fine art. I admit Derwent are not my first choice in art materials, thought I will say - credit where credit is due - what Derwent are very good at is bringing out the "unique" products such as these pencils, their inktense, and finally their excellent dog shaped scratching tool for scraffiti/indenting/scratching techniques which is a great little tool. Where Derwent fail in general is overpricing without enough attention to fine art/lightfast products. For example. Their pro colour pencil is more expensive than polychromos, and IMHO polychromos is better and offers better lightfast results. If they pulled themselves out the "general craft" market (they're marketed in all craft stores here, but not so much in fine art shops) and focused more on producing fine art materials that have better light fast ratings, they could easily ride alongside Faber Castell and Caran D'ache. Great pencil piece btw Lisa!

      There are no set skin color pencils. It would completely depend on the person and the lighting that person is under. Every single situation would be different.

    I ordered 6 of these Derwent pencils before I saw your video. They arrived this morning and they do lay down really really nicely. They will never replace my Luminance, however, they do compliment them. I may buy a few extra colours to see what they're like. I must admit I didn't have any sharpening issues, I used a mechanical, an electric and a good old fashioned small pencil case sharpener. My black was perfect, and sharpened to a point like a dream. They didn't say anything about light fastness on the tin though.. Nothing on the pencils either. Thanks for the videos. Your demonstrations and tutorials for Coloured pencils are great, really informative. I also love the smart art boxes you do, and the funny quips you make. 😊

    It appears that there is more or finer fur in the lighter shades of cat. Is this intentional? The black patches of the cat appear almost hairless giving it a flatter appearance. It seemed like you didn't bother adding the fur texture to the dark areas.

    Hi, Lachri! I am a aspiring, experimental artist, and quite young. I can't get paint thinner / mineral spirits. Do you have any less toxic alternatives that work similar and perhaps a video on how to use it / them. And as well, could you make a real time video on wildlife or portraits. I currently use polychromos, as they are one of the easiest ones to get in my country. I have tried some homemade solutions for the blending problem, but I can't layer on top of any of them, which is a problem as I love to layer. Thanks, you're my inspiration for my art! Yours, Kitty.
    EDIT: Liquid, similar to the paint thinner preferred, not colorless blenders.

    Love this Margay! It's so real! Also, a question. You said gel pens and acrylic paint won't be archival on wax/oil based colored pencil. What about on Inktense pencil work? I will be getting the white Inktense block for details, but I recently made a piece (before I watched your some of your Inktense videos or this one) and I used a gel pen for a lot of fine detail. I didn't sell it or anything, but I'd like to know if all that detail will fade/come off. Thanks for all your videos, that must take so much time, and I soooo appreciate it! :)

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  5 років тому

      Nope, because inktense is water-based. The only thing that I recommend for those bright white highlights is the touchup texture/titanium white mixture :) As far as the gelpen, it will be prone to chipping or rubbing off with time. Some yellow with time.

    Aren't these the same pencils that Derwent has been making for years in the earth tones....only now they are offering them in more colors?

    Have you tried the Derwent Studio/Artist's compared to the Procolour?

    Hi Lisa I just had a classmate break his prismacolor three times in a row and though it was worth mentioning😂 thank you for recommending me the polychromos I absolutely love them and love watching classmates break their prismacolors while I'm over here drawing with my polychromos😅

      LOL sounds about right. I had to use my prismas for a quick sample of something and pretty much had the same thing happen.

    How opaque are these compared to other brands like luminance or Prismacolors??

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  7 років тому +1

      These are the most opaque that I've used. Not by HUGE margins, but when tested on black paper these were brighter.

      Work more slowly, pay attention to your reference photo and watch your values. Most importantly, just keep practicing :)

    i have a question about my inktense-it doesn't stay permanent and lifts off like watercolor, it happens more with the blocks than pencils but is still pretty annoying. am i doing something wrong or did i get two defective packs?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  7 років тому +1

      You're most likely applying the pencils and blocks directly to the paper and not dissolving it all the way when you add water. If you have dry bits that didn't blend out all the way, they will still activate when the next layer of water is added.

    I have Derwent studio-pencils- and I try to blend and create layers but it quickly looks like mud D:

    • @attheranch873
      @attheranch873 6 років тому

      Toyon95 there are certain colors that when blended together make mud or grey. Look up color theory and see the color wheel. You’ll learn which combos to blend and which to avoid.

    the thing I find with these pencils is that they are earthy colours, no good for anything bright. I like the texture, though.
