    Serious question: How do you find a good pair of shorts? We're all different so what's good for a friend might not be good for me. Plus they won't let you try them on in the shop (for hygiene reasons) and even if you could, trying them in the shop doesn't mean that they'll be comfortable on the bike on a long ride. And if you buy them, you won't know if you don't get on with them until you've done a good few miles in them. If I spent a couple of hundred quid on shorts and they were great then I'd be a happy bunny. But if I paid a couple of hundred quid and the shorts ended up laughing at me from the bottom of the drawer, then I'd feel ripped off. I think this dilemma is the reason that I'm still wearing shorts that should have gone in the bin a long time ago.

    Great video Katie. Durability is one aspect of expensive kit. But the point you make about comfort and enjoyment you get from quality kit is the most important aspect. My advice to new cyclist is to be patient in buying kit. Keep an eye out for sales. Quite often you can get really nice kit for reasonable prices.

    One thing I found that helps kit last longer is using those Zip up washing bags I think it stops them getting all twisted up in the washer, and you can wash stuff with Velcro at the same time (in a separate bag) without the worry of it damaging your Lycra. Bloody useful for keeping kit in order too, small stuff gets its own bag, so you don't end up hunting for a lost sock or glove inside the large stuff. All my matching kits have there own set of bags and once they have been washed and dried they go back in them, so I just have to grab the bag of the kit I want and know its all there.

      I 100% agree 👍. A mesh bag with a zipper, which a set of 6, can be purchased online very cheaply ($10) does wonders to protect quality cycling gear in the wash.

    • @chris1275cc
      @chris1275cc Рік тому

      @@luciouspontorro3741 Those bags and my "still wont die" 6 year old Aldi work stand are some of the best cycling related purchases I've ever made LOL. Also forgot to add so might as well do it here: You can throw normal clothes in there too so you save on the energy bill by not having to just wash your kit. Especially good in summer months when sweaty kit has to go in the wash immediately so it doesn't start to stink the house up.👃🤮🤢

      Are you talking about the mesh bags, or fullon guppy bags designed to stop micro plastics being washed down the drain?
      Really curious about those and how wellthings wash in them.

    • @chris1275cc
      @chris1275cc Рік тому

      @@thebrowns5337 I'd never heard of Guppy bags until now TBH. The ones I use look very similar to those the "mesh" is very close weave/knit and they are zipped (I have used drawstring type in the past with no issues). Never had any issue with the detergent not getting to the clothes but those could be a tighter weave. You could always put gel wash tablets in the bag with the clothes, maybe?

    My biggest disappointment were expensive bibs from ASSOS. Discolouration at the front, seam fell apart multiple time in the seating area (until mending wasn't worth it anymore).
    My much cheaper DHB bibs seem to hold forever. Also good experience with Endura shorts. My favourite in terms of quality and fit are the Castelli jackets and ROS jerseys.

    Two things to keep in mind: If your current kit(s) work, most brands have sales around the end of year/new year (Blacksheep is the exception), so you can afford better kit 😊
    Second thing is the importance of washing your kit properly. I have done pretty well with longevity by washing them in a laundry bag; cold wash and drying on the line.
    P.S. Sealant stains bib shorts 😞

    I’ve never tried Rapha, but have tried a few other brands. I tried Assos a couple of times over the years, but found them a bit hit & miss, especially being 6’4”. Not consistent in terms of comfort or quality, and not really long enough. Castelli have been good on the other hand, but not had any for a while. My favourite budget(ish) shorts are Ale, really comfy on long outdoor rides, not so good indoors after an hour or so. My absolute favourites though are the LeCol pro range. Best I’ve ever had for comfort, quality and durability. Consistent in both quality and sizing, absolutely love ‘em. Be good to get your review of these. Pricey, but often have offers on.

    I'm about to say 'adieu' to a par of Cafe du Cycliste bib shorts that are about the same age. I like the look of their gear but I think Rapha has it on material quality/durability. Having said that, the dyes in Rapha shirts, merino and lycra can't handle the NZ sun and fade/discolour very quickly... like, one summer and navy/black or even pink are cosmetically toast.

    Interesting, I’ve had the same shorts (in blue) for roughly that long. I prefer that chamois to their later ones as well. Mine have worn the same (stitching coming away on the edge but chamois still good). The only thing I don’t like about them is the narrow leg gripper (sausage leg). I always wash mine in a laundry bag. Really enjoy your videos 👍 Oh and fave bibs are Pearl Izumi (Pro for road, Expedition for gravel) partly for look and comfort but also they are easiest for loo stops with their drop tail, would love to know if you know of a more convenient brand (not Assos, that front clip is stupid).

    Thanks Katie: This is a sore subject (see what I did there?). Started out using cheap shorts both outdoors and indoors (Zwift) and soon discovered that not all chamois and shorts are created equal. Joined a team (Team TFC IRL and Zwift) that has a relationship with Primal....big improvement. Completed a few Strava challenges and got Le Col discounts --- night and day....Better construction means less pain in long outdoor and (especially) indoor sessions. Mostly wear bibs for all rides, but I think shorts for indoor sessions make sense. Better construction means repeated washings won't disintegrate chamois or open stitching (poor Bike Nashbar).
    Been my experience that bottoms mean a lot more than tops. Jerseys just need to fit and look cool...bibs and shorts are like shoes, they have to REALLY fit and not create hot spots. Thus for me, I can get away with cheaper jerseys but try to up my game when it comes to bibs and shorts. Recently tried an inexpensive alternative from NeoPro (out of Australia)....did a couple of 4+ hour rides using Le Col and NeoPro bibs and found the only difference is that the NeoPro are like 1/3 the price. Just a matter of seeing how this lower cost alternative holds up over time. As a larger rider the shoulder straps are also a consideration -- Le Col have had some breakdowns in the 2+ years I've owned their Sport bibs...they cheerfully replaced one that had a tear in the webbing of a strap.
    Thanks for the content. Have fun climbing.

    I have this version of the shorts and although they are falling apart they are still the most comfortable cycling short I own. I also have the newer model, which are the most uncomfortable cycling shorts I have ever owned. The new chamois causes horrendous chafing under my bum cheeks. I contacted Rapha about this a few months ago to see if they had any plans to bring back the smaller cut for woman chamois and there are no plans to. I’m on the hunt for an alternative if anyone has any recommendations?

    Echo comments about mesh wash bag and sports specific detergent, following wash / re-proofing instructions, rotating kit - 2 sets, it helps convenience/ longevity. Would add that although chamois may look and feel as new this can be deceptive until you compare with identical bibs new. Took it too far once (and although visually perfect) discovered that my 5 yr old S7 Assos bibs were’ dead’ as saddle soreness emerged on a 600 m mini tour of Devon & Cornwall. Probably should’ve been changed 3rd / 4th year

    When I first started cycling 6 yrs ago, I started with cheap shorts since I didn't know if I would like it. Since then I have bought a couple middle to upper end shorts and oh my gosh, what a difference! One of my big things outside of the chamois is the even compression feel all over. My cheaper ones did the job...they helped me love cycling! But the compression and grip was in random spots and I looked like the Michelin Man. Ha ha!
    Thanks for the review Katie!!!

These where expensive but well worth the money. I usually buy the best kit I can afford because it always lasts longer than cheaper kit. Thanks for a great video.

    Good stuff once again Katie, my experience has been that cheaper bibs and shorts do the job ok but for longer rides they don’t seem to provide as much comfort as the more expensive variety and, as we all know I would think, a comfortable ride is a good ride and a painful posterior can ruin a ride. I guess like a lot of things you get what you pay for but I’ve found too that the more expensive ones tend to last longer. Good to see you’ve ridden up Cheddar Gorge, my old training ground before I came to Oz many, many years ago. Just watch out for wandering tourists if you are riding back down fast🙂.
    Keep up the good work👍

    Useful video Katie. You Rapha shorts display great environmentally friendly credentials I think and I hope you continue to wear them for another 5 years, for although they contain lots of plastic you have got lots of wear from them and have helped prevent filling up landfill. I use similar fabrics for other sports clothes. Can I suggest using a microfibre catcher to you and your community when they wash their sports clothes. This helps the waterways and oceans from filling up with plastic microfibres. Keep doing what your doing Katie.xx

    Rapha classics are the best. Still using a pair that must be almost 10 years old. Had to get the needle and thread out after I had a bad crash in them as the paramedics cut through the bib straps! Core jerseys are good but like you say the bibs go a bit see through after a couple of years.

    It is not too hard to re-sew a shammy with a zig-zag stitch. Better to catch it early so you are only repairing a few cm's and there is no guessing how to get the layers all aligned. My favorite liner shorts wore similarly after about 4 years, and are going strong another year after my repair.

    I’m one year in to wearing a pair of Pearl Izumi shorts. I’d definitely classify them as mid-range since they retail for around $100 as I recall.
