It was already over, he overstepped and from then on plenty more fans turned away from him and wished for his downfall. An Nba example would be Westbrook shit talking Lillard with the too small, and baby taunts. He lost to a Dame Lillard step back three, and now he is Dame's son forever. If you keep your trap shut though or keep the taunts and shit talk to a manageable level, no one will truly ever hate you or want to see you fall.
