That scene with Miss Ellie smashing dishes and cups in the kitchen & breaking down like that at the realization that Jock is really gone, really captured grief in its rawest form!! Anyone who's lost someone that they love could truly relate to that powerful scene!! Also since Jim Davis had actually passed away at that time, Barbara Bel Geddes was actually grieving for him in that scene
Miss Ellie's character was one of a kind. She was tough as nails when she had to be but she also had a kind and compassionate heart. Her family always came first. They don't make tv like this anymore. That scene when she had finally excepted Jock's death was worthy of an Oscar in my book.
Almost all the female characters in Dallas were very likeable. They were so selfless to one another ex Sue Ellen and Jamie and Lucy and Cally. Unlike today's females it's all about the Devil Wearing Prada and pitting against one another.
I can identify with what Miss Ellie went through. My Father died in October and I didn't break down until July the following year. I had a dream where he was in it and I just broke down and sobbed uncontrollably. I felt much better but I didn't realize how much pain I had kept inside of me.
laminage My dad died last January and it really struck a chord with me when Miss Ellie said that she knew Jock was gone but she would have her memories of him forever, totally resonated with me.
@@CaAnPeSe4ever Absokutely. He had Cancer and within Six Months he was gone. Jock was the love of Miss Ellie's life. I missed him so much when he died. The Scenes weren't as powerful in terms of Business at Ewing Oil or even The Cocktail Hour.
Same here, but it was like 2-3 years later. My mom had died and one weekend i went home and my aunt was talking about my mom. I Just bursted out crying so loud. I couldn't stop and it scared me. I loved and miss her so much.
The first time I ever saw my mother cry was right after my father passed away. I was in my late 40s and it affected me as if I were a small child. My parents had been married for 59 years. It is very difficult to watch someone hurting after the death of someone that they love and have made memories with for so many years.
Barbara Bel Geddes was relating to her character, because she knew that Miss Ellie had loved her Jock so much until the day she had lost him (this was because in real-life Jim Davis had passed away & producers of Dallas had to find somebody for Barbara). Her character needed to stay single for a while, but eventually they got another movie star - Howard Keel - to fill his void. He loved Dallas, as much as he loved dancing & Barbara.
my mum done the same thing when dad died, she just lost it,smashed a few glasses and plates, but my dad always use to say, keep the family together when i'm gone. love you mum, your one strong lady.
It's pretty real. Good scene. I could relate when my mom passed, and my dad was stoic and tough at first. Then cried. We had to let him go. Nothing you can do. Got to grieve.
Barbara Bel Geddes was a great actress! You know it's great acting when you could feel the weight of her inconsolable grief upon coming to the realization of Jock's death. She captured Miss Ellie's anguish perfectly. It's like the good Lord put Miss Bel Geddes on this earth to play Eleanor Southworth Ewing! And to the 7 who downvoted this, you might as well deny the reflection of your own face in the mirror if you don't think this is great acting!
And when she said i know jocks never coming back but i have my memories of him and there forever everyone can relate to people living dead pets gone to doggie kitty heaven and just moments in life you knew or thought would never end still resonates 42 years later because so many of my people are gone including pop culture idols.
I went through this with the death of my father. The grief was so intense that it took me a couple years to get through it. You never really “get over it,” but you eventually learn to come to terms and start living again.
The scene at 2:50 where Miss Ellie smashes all the plates was the most powerful scene of the entire series, for me. I have watched every single episode and I found this scene to really let the emotion loose like it never has been. No words can speak the power of that scene.
I agree...some of her best acting! This scene was Dallas' equivalent to the Good Times-- Damn...Damn...Damn!!!!! scene, when James died; and Florida smashes the punch bowl in utter grief. Barbara Bel Geddes was a fine actress... and this scene actually depicts her range.
Yes, it was. When my Father died in October I didn't fully grieve until the following July. I had a good cry but I felt like I was releasing this burden off of my shoulder.
Poor JR! Ray, Bobby & Miss Ellie and the other members of the family were, did and here helped each other over the grieving process were JR had to do it alone holding Jocks chain. And people wonder why JR is evil, twisted, bitter, resentful & vicous. Buisness was all he had. This and the next 2 episode is ome of Larry Hagmans best work. Tell me the real Dallas fans who didn't have a lump in there throat when JR alone with the chain wells up devastated because I feel theres a lot of Larry Hagmans true emotions there. That's not just acting that's emotions. RIP Jim Davis, RIP Larry Hagman, RIP Barbara Bel Geddes!
JR didn't have to stick to himself and not share. He was always a greedy boy from his teenage years. He embraced being closed off because it kept him safe. Now, whether that was healthy or not, or even conditioned or not, but it was certainly his choice. But picking up on what you said, I did appreciate the scenes where he softens - particularly with Bobby. Larry Hagman was so amazing for playing such a complex and layered individual. It is rare to pull that off. I've seen it a few times over the years where an actor gives such depth and layers, and you can see the flickering aspects of personalities and emotional processing of the character in a scene by an actor. Larry was one just one of those guys. Yes, JR grieved alone and it was sad and poignant, but I didn't necessarily feel sorry for him because he had to grieve alone because he didn't have to. lol All his family ever wanted from him and FOR HIM was for JR to be open and loving. They didn't give him shit just to give him shit, they were tired of HIS shit most of the time, but they still loved him. But if he would've straightened up and been a good boy, then Dallas would NEVER have been the same. lol
Oh absolutely. On The Dallas Reunion Special, he talked about how he was like their Captain in the early days of the show. When JR looked up at the sky when they came back, you knew that JR would never be the same without his "Daddy".
In this episode my dream I would have been Jocks daughter in law married to Bobby then when we found out jock was dead I would have held Bobby in my arms tightly saying I know u will miss your daddy think of all the memories you have of him I love you Bobby always will u are my husband he says liane I love you so much so glad we have each other during this hard time our family is going through.
I thought that too. Hopefully Miss Ellie at least offered to helpclean it up after She was the type who would , as she was not the snobby , lazy type. She was in grief however, so maybe she was too out of it to think about that.
I like the part where she is breaking things in the kitchen. I see it kinda like she's still grieving a lot (and she's in a great pain) but there's no more tears left...
I think it was cruel of the producers to make Miss Ellie's grieve over Jock's death in the spring of 1982 in front of the camera. Barbara Bel Geddes, was grieving in private over Jim Davis's death in the summer of 1981. Why would they make her grieve again in front of the camera. I do not understand that. Any one's thought on that, please let me know.
Prime time shows shoot (film) at least 3-4 months in advance, at least! That coupled with the reality that the stars were given real time to grieve before tapping into those raw emotions for such scenes. Sure, it would be amazing to see that kind of raw emotion being used to create art for a story line that mirrors the real thing, but in a way, it's also tacky... it was much more respectful for the producers to allow the cast to grieve on their own and process their emotions rather than exploiting them for ratings, wouldn't you agree? plus, it might be detrimental to one's personal and emotional well being if someone uses that kind of emotion for performance when it is so raw before they actually have time to process their personal feelings. After all, it is an actor's job to pull on emotions and bring them back. She did that. If you think she would've done it better when she was really feeling devastated, that's knocking her ability and also suggesting you think she should have been exploited and used like a tool in a factory. Now, I know you weren't saying that so no need to respond. ;-)
