I am thinking about teaching in Costa Rica in July! Its been in my mind for a long time now and am just waiting to take the leap of faith into it. This was a great video ☺️
I wonder if teacher age is an issue? It seemed to be the case in South Korea. I ask because I am 51. 20 year experience is US and abroad. Health care was not addressed in this video either. I have heard good and affordable health care. I enjoyed this particular video
Hi Katie, I found my job on Dave's ESL Cafe. It was a volunteer teaching position so I got a grant from my university to cover the costs of my flights, program fee and homestay. If you want to teach and get paid, then I reocmmend doing a TEFL program in Costa Rica and then searching for jobs once you are there.
And iv heard most Latin American countries prefer hiring in person rather than online. Well am in SA and advantage is that we dont need a visa to visit most of Latin America for atleast 90 days or 180 days. I just wonder how to go about it to teach legally when i get a job whilst already in the country.
It depends on the country and type of teaching job. Some will allow you to convert to a work visa once you have a contract. Some people work on tourist visas (which isn’t actually legal) and do visa runs to reset their visa. I recommend going the legal route.
@@ESLTeacher365 I don't have my associate's degree yet. I should be graduating next year around October time. I really want to be in japan. But most of their programs are for bachelor's degree. @@villevilkki3625 That's correct. I got a grant from my university to cover costs like the flight, my homestay, etc. I did this over the summer as my first teach abroad experience to test it out to see if I wanted to teach abroad as a career.
@@ESLTeacher365 thats very good to know. Im doing more or less the same thing. Im gonna go to Costa Rica to do an internship next summer and I don’t get paid. But just like you I think my university can give me some kind of a grand. Were you able to start a job with a salary eventually in Costa Rica? Like basically what im asking, is that since you started as a volunteer and if you were able to eventually start a paying job, what are the steps from volunteer -> job with a salary? (+ perhaps the ability to move there and get residency?) what was your path?
@@villevilkki3625 I was only in Costa Rica over the summer. I had to do my student teaching in the US and then I moved to Egypt after that. Getting a job legally in Costa Rica is challenging. A lot of teachers end up doing "visa runs" and teach on tourist visas - but you need to be careful because this isn't technically legal so schools take advantage of you. If you want to teach in Costa Rica properly, you'll want to get a teaching license so you can teach at universities or international schools.
It will depend on where you are teaching (public school, private school, in-company business classes, etc.) To be on the safe side, you can do a basic 120 hour online TEFL course. I am a certified teacher but there have been places where I've needed a TEFL as well.

Age is more of an issue in Asia. I actually had surgery when I was in Costa Rica and my travel insurance paid for it.
Hi just came across this video if i may ask
which website did you use
Dave's ESL Cafe

It’s easiest to get hired in country or by going through a placement program. Which TEFL course did you do?
Can you make videos on other countries where you don't have to have a degree
Which countries are you most interested in?

Do you have a degree and TEFL? What passport do you have?
Hi, do you have any recommendations on where to find jobs in Costa Rica?
Bigger cities like Heredia, San Jose and Cartago.
How were you able to teach? What about the work permit stuff?
I taught as a volunteer through a program.

Is there any chance for the non-native English teacher to teach in Costa Rica? Please, let me know.
Yes please! Let us non native speakers know.
@@prernapadlikar Can you you tell me the procedure?
Yes, non-natives can teach in Costa Rica. It’s recommended to have an English language level certificate like IELTS/TOEIC, etc. plus a TEFL.
