What makes Danish design so unique?

  • In this video we’re gonna talk about a subject we really love: Danish 20th century design! We’re often asked why Danish design is so unique and we will do our best to answer that question. We will show you some characteristics of Danish design and tell you why the Danes made the best mid-century furniture. As a Swede it’s hard to confess, but Swedish furniture really can’t compete with this. And yeah, as always we will focus on furniture. Danish design is obviously so much more than that, but we can’t talk about too many different things in a single video, it would be too confusing.

Another excellent video by two people who are passionate about Scandinavian design. I wasn't familiar with Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bendar-Madsen so I will definitely be checking them out. Learn something new with each video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.

Ya'll say that your focus is on furniture, not architecture, so I thought it would be a fun episode idea to talk about architects and their furniture and architecture designs.

One of your best videos. As you said in the last minutes: "When knowledge and craftsmanship get lost, it is almost impossible to recover it"... Look at peoples who, because of wars, epidemics, natural disasters and such, lost the knowledge to make many of their own things..Their cultures become stagnant, and they replace their impoverished culture with the worst of what other cultures have to offer
If you haven't done so already, could you, please, make a video about the replicas and fake furniture coming from places like China and elsewhere?

Great idea! We've already done a podcast episode in Swedish on copies focusing on the fraud company Designers Revolt. We could perhaps do a similar UA-cam video in English.

As a feminist geographer, I can't help but follow the story within your reply, "peoples who, because of wars..." have replaced their knowledge with the worst of others. So it seems even the history of furniture is overwritten by colonization. You wrote this a year ago yet it still resounds with amazing clarity.
