This video came at the PERFECT time! I got on birth control at 17 and I’m 24 now - been off the pill for 2 1/2 weeks. I suffer from anxiety and I decided I want to see if this could be stemming from the pill. I’m terrified of acne (it runs in my family) but I’m ready to take on this challenge to heal my body and regulate my health naturally. Thank you for your honesty!!!!
How are you feeling now? Do you notice your anxiety has improved since going off the pill? Did you have acne issues after as well? I'm so nervous to go off it but I gotta do it.
Im 32 and I had noooo clue until about 3 weeks ago that your “ period “ on birth control isn’t an actual period . And so many women that I mentioned it to ( I’m a hairstylist so I see many women everyday lol) they had no clue either ….. you would think these important topics would be discussed by your doctor🤷🏻♀️
i am reading How The Pill Changes Everything by Dr. Sarah E. Hill and she says that the pill is often the root of our anxiety. It is an amazing book so far and i am not even through half of it
I’m 36 now and have been on birth control 3-4 times since 21. Main reason to go on the birth control was to prevent pregnancy. I was on it briefly between October - December 2022 and i can tell you there were major differences in my personality and mood. I felt like a different person when I was on the pill, I became very quiet, depressed, negative and low on energy. But when I went off it, I was always smiling, laughing, feeling optimistic, more energetic, eager, started running and felt more confident. The pill took my confidence away and my masculine side and I didn’t like it. 😮
This is the exact reason I want to try and come off it because I honestly feel so low / emotionless right no. I feel flat all the time and numb. Did you just come off cold Turkey ?
Bro, being confident, happy, and optimistic is not "masculine". Bro, I can't with people who live their lives within the gender binary. Everything is "masculine" "feminine", and it's annoying.
Thank you Natalie for sharing! I’ve heard a lot of perspectives on this topic, many that haven’t been very humble and I have to say this is the most refreshing, honest and nonjudgmental one I’ve seen ❤️ there is truly so much beauty in being more in tune with our bodies and being able to make more informed decisions!
Thank you for sharing your experience Natalie ❤️ I also had a similar experience where I was put on birth control at a young age and wasn’t properly educated on what it does and how it affects our bodies. I definitely feel like birth control was almost seen as the “magic” fix for everything growing up (acne, cramping etc.) instead of addressing the root cause of these issues.
thank you for his video so much, im actually about to start going off birth control TODAY... this marks me going off of it after 6 years! i am nervous and excited :) i feel much better after watching this
I was put on birth control at 12 years old to help with my EXTREM cramps (got my period at 11) two years ago after 10 years on the pill I decided to stop taking it. BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE. Im less depressed, less tired and I went from a B cup to a C/D cup. ❤️❤️
Hi. I’m planning to stop taking bc next year. Wondering if you’ve still been doing good? Other videos I’ve seen of women coming off say they’ve lost hair, get migraines daily, and have severe acne.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! I'be been on birth control for a very long time, got on it because I had heavy periods which I were told were the reason I had iron defficiency anemia. Well, here I am now, years later, no periods, and STILL anemic. My skin has gotten better, but with all the possible negative side effects such as higher risk for getting a stroke, it can affect mental health etc, I'm leaning more towards getting off birth control and see how my body reacts now.
I started birth control two years ago when I was 25 and now I am 27. The reason I started was because I was dating someone, and we didn't want any risk of pregnancy. My periods before birth control, I feel blessed they were not horrible, but not fun either I didn't have heavy flows the only thing that I had was a lot of lower back pain and maybe some cramping. My drive before and even now on birth control was never really crazy high so I don't think that has changed much since being on it. However, since that relationship I feel so weird being on birth control because I am not active as of right now and it just seems weird I am putting synthetic hormones in my body when it is not necessary. Maybe this is weird to say but apart of me misses having a period because that is something normal a woman experiences and I feel weird not having one at all. I have been thinking of getting off it because of that reason and I am glad you told your story it really helped me get some insight and look more into possibly getting off thank you
Thank you for sharing. I got on birth control at the age of 13... which is so mindblowing. It was due to very heavy bleeding and bleeding for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. The pill did regulate my period and lessen the bleeding. I went off birth control around age 28 to try and get pregnant. I could not get pregnant, which I believe had more to do with my ex husband, but either way, when we separated i went back on birth control for 2 years and just came off about a month ago. I know I have awhile to completely detox and reset, but I started feeling very different pretty quickly. I absolutely felt like a zombie and feel more myself now. Both times i went off the pill in my life it has caused my emotions to be a roller-coaster for awhile. I also lost hair while on the pill and hoping to regain some of it now... its insane the # and variety of side effects you can have with birth control. I dont ever want to be on it again. Its mind altering and changes your personality
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, Natalie! I’m Japanese and in Japan, so many girls use birth control pills without knowing about their side effects of it. Most people say only good things about birth control pills on the internet and I’ve always found it a little fishy.. I understand they give a lot of benefits for us but we need to educate ourselves on what they cause to our bodies :)
Thank you for sharing. I am 34 and have now been on birth control for basically 20 years...sounds so crazy. I now know I want to get off but like you said I am scared, just like you it helped clear my skin and always made me feel like i was in control of my "period". Very excited to get my body and hormones back though...
Thank you for sharing this, Natalie!! I am meeting with a holistic doctor soon to prepare my body to get off of BC (choosing between a few options including Parsley health!) and am sooooo scared for the side effects of getting off of it, but also incredibly excited to be myself again! You are glowing and I’m so happy things are improving for you!! 💗
i just went through the same thing, and i would always tell ppl i felt like a robot!! always felt weird saying that out loud/didn't think anyone understood that, but now that i've been off birth control i feel so much more like myself
Omg it was a tie between purchasing that book (Your Brain on Birth Control) and Beyond The Pill by Dr. Jolene Brighten!! I ended up buying Beyond The Pill, so nervous about going off it so I'm consuming all the education I can about to it mentally prepare for it and have a good support system to turn to! ❤ P.s. thank you for the video! I'm also definitely going to download the Flo app now thanks to your strong recommendation!
I appreciate your honesty in this video! I was in a similar case of being on it for years and getting a pretty severe health scare and having a pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in your lungs) as a cause of the pill I was on. I wasn’t properly warned about these effects either and was prescribed it pretty young but hearing about other women’s experiences makes me feel so heard! I wish you the best of luck with the transition off the pill!
This was such a good, informative video about birth control! Thank you for being open with us. I’ve definitely been contemplating for years but I think it’s time for my overall health and body!
I recently got off birth control ( pill form) after being on it for 9 years. I’m two months off and it has made me realize how bad I was actually feeling on it, depressed, moody, anxiety. I can’t speak for the acne issue since I never suffered with acne problems so coming off the pill did nothing to me skin wise. My periods are like a brand new experience, they HURT lol and are “longer” I went from what it was barely a period for two days to a full 4-5 day period , the cramps are intense let me tell you but not severe or Anythjng, just a new feeling. I got off when I finally reached the week of my period on my pack and then never took it again. My mood has IMPROVED TREMENDOUSLY. I’m 29 now and it’s like relearning everything about my body, hormones and mood. Weight wise? I didn’t gain on the pill and I’m not sure if I gained off, I haven’t weighed myself but I’m sure I have but either way I think I look great.
I’m 34 yrs old and I’m still on birth control pills. I experienced side effects was headaches, breast changes, weight gain, hormone imbalance, nausea, and mood changes. The good thing I did not have acne skin because I drink more water everyday and always eat healthy food.
I started birth control at 18 mainly to prevent pregnancy. It’s been 6.5 years I’m still with the same partner and I’m getting off of it. We’re going to use other forms of protection we aren’t ready for a baby yet. However, I feel the same way. Monotone robotic the way you described it is exactly how I feel. Even when I earned my B.A. back in May I was like “meh” about it. I’ve only been off 3 days but I’m excited to get my normal self back.
Thank you so much for this!! I recently decided to go off of birth control. I’m definitely a little scared, but I really dont like the fact that I wasnt told all of the risks beforehand. Since being on the pill I’ve developed psoriasis and some gut problems and I’m wondering if they were possibly caused by the pill! Thank you so much for being so open and candid!!
So I'm on the pill and have also been on it for a decade, but I've been thinking about switching to a different form of contraceptive lately. This video definitely gave me food for thought. Thank you Natalie!
Ten years of birth control for me too. I got off 6 months ago and the physical struggle is real. I have horrible acne, my hair is falling out, and I’ve gained about 10lbs. I am really trying to balance my androgens now. On the plus side, my lips and boobs are fuller lol, thank you estrogen. Emotionally, I felt instantly better, then went through some downs, and now I am feeling really good. As for my period? I love getting it naturally. It feels “right”.
@@KaitlinRymeri have PCOS so getting back on birth control was the choice I made. I know there are a lot of natural solutions to balance PCOS, but they take longer and I wanted instant gratification.
How long u use 10 years?I m using 4 months bcz I have hairsutism my weight is 46😢 no baby.can ur breast size nd weight increase?after one years or how much time size is increase
I took it because my pms was really bad, and it did help but I stared getting really weird symptoms, I got two periods a month, never changed, I felt like I was always on my period,… I got so bloated all the time, and I strength train 6 days a week and I’m vegan. I got constipated…ugh wish me luck on quitting this birth control..
Thank you for sharing this, I’ve just made the decision to come off and I’ll admit just like you, I had no idea what it did to my body and didn’t know how it even actually worked etc, all my concern was just on not getting pregnant, so I didn’t really think about it. I’ve been on it for 13years so I’m quite scared what will happen now, but thank you so much for sharing your perspective 🥰 xx
I’ve been on it since I was 12.. I’m 21, I am terrified to get off of it. I read like you might not be attractive to your partner and i’ve been with him since 16. I haven’t had a period since I was 12. Im scared for a period and cramps because I’ve had such bad cramps in the past.
I don’t think your attractiveness to your partner changes, but your attraction towards them might. Because your hormone levels will change and we often become attracted to our partners because we like the pheromones they give off. That’s what I heard somewhere anyway. But you can give it a try and see if it affects you in that way. You can always go back on it. Not sure about the cramps though, you may want to discuss that with your ob gyn. For me it was mostly a better experience off it, but I’m now needing to look for an alternative.
update: right after I wrote this comment I got off of it. 3 months later I still love my partner. I’m actually 10x more attractive to him and see how he cares for me. My doctor told me it could take up to a year to get my period I got it 2 weeks after getting off of it. Cramps are bad, but they run in my family and drinking lots of water has helped. Overall, I feel like myself more off of it than on it.
I’ve been on it since I was 14 and I’m now 19 I wanna get off so bad but I’m terrified that I’m gonna get fatter or break out or just be a different person like you were saying .
Another great book is Wild Power. Also The Fifth Vital Sign. Thank you for sharing Parsley! My naturopath, MD just changed her practice so I needed someone else!
Mine put me into a literal psychosis. I got off- felt great had my first period in 2 years after 5 weeks and experienced INSANE panic attacks and it put me into DPDR. I was hallucinating and EVERYTHING. And the doctors just said it was anxiety! Post birth control syndrome is real
Birthcontrol was definitely a mood stabilizer for me I totally get the robot feeling and feeling more like myself and feeling deeper however, I like the feeling more like me but I’ve become a lot more reactive to things and situations and makes me feel a little out of control and I’m unsure of how to handle it. 10:34
girl i really hope this doesnt come off rude but I'm going to (again) emphasize how much spironalactone changed my skin/life. if you are uncomfortable with the pill version, they have a topical one. You can get a prescription from Apostrophe (an online dermatologist appointment). I am not sponsored, I just love spiro. The pill version does work better though. Give it three months and if you're like most women, your skin will be clear af. Anyway, thanks for sharing and wishing you luck on your skin/health :)
I believe you! Not rude at all. Im so happy it worked for your skin!! I may try it down the line but I think I found a good solution that’s working for me now :)
@@maddylovesgood ok thanks! My doctor started me at 100 and after 3 months upped it to 150 and I started spotting so I think I wanna go back to 100 lol. Did you have any side effects like that?
I just currently got off the nuvaring I’m excited to be back to myself but scared to get pregnant ( I can’t do condoms they irritate me I’ve been with the same person for 3 and half years) and acne. And I am excited to have my libido back on tmi but it was a big issue during the time I was on birth control for 3 and half years. I was scared to get off it because my mom would scare me to get pregnant but I knew what I had to do what’s best for me
I was 13 or 14 when I was put on it, and I regret it so much because there could've been other ways, but my Dr didn't even try to find another way. I was too young and shouldn't have been allowed on it til I was 18 and have seen a woman Dr and not just a primary/ped.
I was on birth control for a year and it made me emotionally unstable, I felt depressed a lot. On edge a lot. I gained a little bit if weight, which I didn’t really mind because I was previously underweight. It didn’t really help keep my periods regular often I experienced break through bleeding or spotting throughout the month. It did make me have a lighter flow. But I also didn’t like messing with my hormones by taking it. So I got off it for a year. Now I need to get back on it, but I’m not sure I wanna go back on the pill. If anyone has any other better pregnancy preventing alternatives they like please let me know.
I am experiencing the same acne problems right now. I got off of birth control in june and my skin is getting worse and worse... Could you please give some advice how to clear the skin, share your experience please it would be very helpful 🙏
I was put on BC at age 12. I developed anxiety and dissociation at age 13. I am 21 now and every gyn told me it was not related and the pill has basically no side effects and I should keep taking it forever (cause I don't want kids). I have decided to FINALLY get off it. No idea what's gonna happen, I haven't had a real period in 9 years. I don't know my body at all. It's really sad and a little frightening, but overall I am really excited even if it will be a long bumpy road ahead
I'm a teenager now and i think i might be going on birth control to control my acne as a temporary " bandaid" so i dont waste these years feeling constantly insecure. I'm planning on stopping , maybe, when i get to college and can control my diet better to balance out my hormones naturally
I heard that the book Woman Code by Alisa Vitti is super good, should be required reading for all women. I think it teaches you how to trust your body's innate wisdom.
I've been going back and forth with getting off birth control forever. I've been on and off since I was 21 and I'm currently 32. I have two kids and don't want more. I want to get off of it because I've been feeling super depressed, very moody, short tempered and like you mentioned, a robot. I don't feel like myself whatsoever, I feel like I'm not present, I hate it so much. I love birth control because I know when I'm getting my period and I like to plan trips around my period, I like how for sure I won't get pregnant again. I feel like I'm a tough spot. I do have a question, did you just stop taking them randomly or did you wait once you ended your period? thank you. 🧡🧡
I legit thought I was going crazy when I thought the pill was causing my hair to fall out. Tons of shedding for the whole 8 months I was on it. Went off a few weeks ago and only a few strands fall out in the shower now vs 100s
Okay I thought I was going crazy.. the last few years my hair has been falling out soo bad.. to the point of embarrassing and I thought maybe I was dealing with a thyroid or autoimmune issue.. I just got off my bc about a week ago so I’m hopeful that it will stop or at least decrease!
Did you stop BC cold Turkey again the second and final time? I have the same story with acne and fear because I tried to go off cold Turkey once and my skin was so bad but I want to go off so bad now and never feel prepared enough 😅🙏🏽
You are a doctor's client. You're their customer. They prescribe drugs based on the claimed effects by the creators and patent owners of said drug. This is huge business. Doctors do not even understand how most drugs function within our bodies, they simply know some of the effects (but not most of the effects), and how much money they'll make. Do not blindly listen to your doctor. They are most useful to go to for life-threatening or disfiguring traumatic injuries, not for wholistic health or for habitual advice.
I had pcod and I got off the pill after 6 months and guess what periods disappeared. I hate ocp is there any other option without causing me not to ovulate as those pills don't let ovulation happen and are so called menses ???? But without them if I don't mentruate than my uteus lining will effect and cause the risk of endometriosis 😔🥺 taking homeopath I get few clot but dont actually know if I am ovulating and my lining sheds or not.. Plsss help dr
How many months after stopping birth control did you begin blood/stool testing with parsley health? Also if you feel open to telling what doctor you used too. Thanks for this video it was very helpful!
i got on birth control at 16 to regulate my periods, treat acne and mainly prevent pregnancy. was on it for just about 5 years it did wonders in regulating my periods and preventing pregnancy but made my acne worse and made me gain a bunch of weight :( i stopped june 2021 and never looked back. my period stopped for about 4 months, then i had it for a week and a half every month, and it's now semi normal and on a schedule (sort of). my period is about the same heaviness and i have since lost some weight and it generally made me feel better (clear head and no headaches, which is something i didn't realize i suffered with until i stopped my birth control). i am now not on any form of birth control and use protection when having sex so i am still protecting myself, but it's obviously different for every single person and depends on what you are looking to get out of your birth control and what is more important to you!! plus there are tons of different pills or forms of birth control to try out if you have access, but it's not for everyone.
oral birth control reduces the risk of ovarian cancer SIGNIFICANTLY. The more time you've been on it, the lower your risk is, so congratulations! I have been on birth control for over 10 years (originally prescribed for acne), and have gone off for short periods to see how it felt. i'm not thrilled with some of the side effects. It's been helpful for me to remember that pregnancy (!!!) is far riskier than oral birth control and it's side effects. so even though birth control side effects can be difficult, oral birth control does amazing work.
@@npineapple3077 that’s good to know. Looks like the risk of breast cancer increases by very little. It is clear that the risks associated with pregnancy are greater than the risks associated with birth control. I just think this should be included in conversations about birth control, because so many women are scared of it but don’t sufficiently understand the risks of pregnancy. Birth control has saved a lot of lives. Risk of cervical cancer does decrease once people stop taking it, and risk of cervical cancer in young people taking it is low. I agree that we should have something better.
I am so happy that I was the 1000th like

We’re going to use other forms of protection we aren’t ready for a baby yet. However, I feel the same way. Monotone robotic the way you described it is exactly how I feel. Even when I earned my B.A. back in May I was like “meh” about it. I’ve only been off 3 days but I’m excited to get my normal self back.
I was given the pill for acne but I think it caused high cholesterol and I had to stop and now my acne is back
Thank you so much for this!!
How'd it go coming off
I 10000% echo your feelings/frustrations about birth control. 💜
So I'm on the pill and have also been on it for a decade, but I've been thinking about switching to a different form of contraceptive lately. This video definitely gave me food for thought. Thank you Natalie!
Have you attempted to switch or get off?
Ten years of birth control for me too. I got off 6 months ago and the physical struggle is real. I have horrible acne, my hair is falling out, and I’ve gained about 10lbs. I am really trying to balance my androgens now. On the plus side, my lips and boobs are fuller lol, thank you estrogen. Emotionally, I felt instantly better, then went through some downs, and now I am feeling really good. As for my period? I love getting it naturally. It feels “right”.
This is so old but I’m at the 6 month mark now have a ton of the same symptoms!! How are you doing now? Looking for some hope lol
Hi I was on BC for about 23 years. My last pill was on 21 May 2024. Did you experience periods for over 15 days when you left the pill?
@@balancedandbeauty no I m using 4 months nd then stop I have 16 days but no periods
You are beautiful! Thank you for opening up ❤
I took it because my pms was really bad, and it did help but I stared getting really weird symptoms, I got two periods a month, never changed, I felt like I was always on my period,… I got so bloated all the time, and I strength train 6 days a week and I’m vegan.
Hi,just wanna ask,did you had spotting after you stop taking BC?taking off BC then when my period arrive its just a spot, did you experience it too?
Thanks for sharing! I recently went off BC and am excited to get more in tune with my body.
What's it been like getting off?
How's your skin hair mood headaches?

@@tangecholima yes I did for a few months and then I stopped getting it. Got it back like 8 months later.
@@wendyc6969 thank you so much
@@wendyc6969 did your doctot told you to had pregnancy test?
I’ve been on it since I was 12.. I’m 21, I am terrified to get off of it. I read like you might not be attractive to your partner and i’ve been with him since 16. I haven’t had a period since I was 12. Im scared for a period and cramps because I’ve had such bad cramps in the past.
I think it's important to supplement this with healthy food and lifestyle choices, as well as dealing mental health.
I heard the same thing too with the attractiveness
update: right after I wrote this comment I got off of it.
@@summerbulluck try raspberry tea gro cramps !
I’ve been on it since I was 14 and I’m now 19 I wanna get off so bad but I’m terrified that I’m gonna get fatter or break out or just be a different person like you were saying .
I lost so much hair coming off birth control and also gained 7 pounds :(
Another great book is Wild Power. Also The Fifth Vital Sign. Thank you for sharing Parsley! My naturopath, MD just changed her practice so I needed someone else!
I’m going to need this skin video! ❤
Thank you for being so transparent thank you thank you. Just
Omg matcha ❤️ I'm really excited about this video because I'm thinking about getting off of the pill too
Birthcontrol was definitely a mood stabilizer for me I totally get the robot feeling and feeling more like myself and feeling deeper however, I like the feeling more like me but I’ve become a lot more reactive to things and situations and makes me feel a little out of control and I’m unsure of how to handle it. 10:34
girl i really hope this doesnt come off rude but I'm going to (again) emphasize how much spironalactone changed my skin/life. if you are uncomfortable with the pill version, they have a topical one.
@@NatalieBarbu ahhh that makes me so happy!! I really hope it sticks. Acne is so tough. Prayers and good vibes for you!!
How many mg do you take?
@@goodlucklaurie 100mg. but i started at 50mg for many years and went up
@@maddylovesgood ok thanks!
I was scared to get off it because my mom would scare me to get pregnant but I knew what I had to do what’s best for me
How do you manage not to get pregnant? I want to quit birth control pills put I don’t want to be pregnant due to college and stuff
Thank you for sharing Natalie ❤️
The only good thing about it is that it clears up your skin and keeps you from getting pregnant but it can make you feel suicidal and crazy
Can you share healthier options to prevent pregnancy? That’s been the only reason I’m on the pill but would love to stop taking it
Thanks for sharing your story.
How are you doing now x
I'm a teenager now and i think i might be going on birth control to control my acne as a temporary " bandaid" so i dont waste these years feeling constantly insecure. I'm planning on stopping , maybe, when i get to college and can control my diet better to balance out my hormones naturally
Did you go on?
@@Wilwilani not yet. I think I'm starting next month
Im curious on what you’re using to not get pregnant? I’m on BC now and I’m scared to get off, for that one reason
Same here. What are good and affective alternatives that aren’t bad for our health?
What are suggestions to prepare your body to get off BC? I’m scared of acne.
I do have a question, did you just stop taking them randomly or did you wait once you ended your period? thank you. 🧡🧡
Waited till I ended my period!
@@NatalieBarbu Thank you, Natalie. I appreciate it. 🤍
Good info and I too had a similar experience
What pill were you on?
How many months after stopping birth control did you begin blood/stool testing with parsley health?
Also if you feel open to telling what doctor you used too.
Thanks for this video it was very helpful!
It shouldn't be our responsibility to look up/research this shit, the doctors should be going through it with u instead of being money hungry
i dont even take birth control etc i just watch this video because your voice is so soothing!
Great video
I definitely want to get off but idk. I feel like it doesn’t effect me much. Makes periods regular and not too heavy.
i got on birth control at 16 to regulate my periods, treat acne and mainly prevent pregnancy. was on it for just about 5 years it did wonders in regulating my periods and preventing pregnancy but made my acne worse and made me gain a bunch of weight :( i stopped june 2021 and never looked back. my period stopped for about 4 months, then i had it for a week and a half every month, and it's now semi normal and on a schedule (sort of). my period is about the same heaviness and i have since lost some weight and it generally made me feel better (clear head and no headaches, which is something i didn't realize i suffered with until i stopped my birth control). i am now not on any form of birth control and use protection when having sex so i am still protecting myself, but it's obviously different for every single person and depends on what you are looking to get out of your birth control and what is more important to you!! plus there are tons of different pills or forms of birth control to try out if you have access, but it's not for everyone.
oral birth control reduces the risk of ovarian cancer SIGNIFICANTLY.
