The Row in the Town / Erin Go Bragh - Peadar Kearney

'The Row in the Town' also known as Erin go Bragh is a rebel song written by Peadar Kearney. It speaks of the 1916 easter rebellion by Irish republicans against British rule in Ireland.
These old rebel songs are an important part of Irish folk music, they can remind us of how hard our freedom was fought for, and the people who sacrificed so much to retrieve it.
I think we’ve lost touch with this a bit, and maybe if we were more in tuned with how hard won our freedoms were, we would be less likely to part with it so easily in the future, weather that be to a foreign invader, to our own government or to destructive ideologies.
Peadar Kearney wrote a lot of well known rebel songs including 'Amhrán na bhFiann' which became the Irish national anthem in the 1920s.

When the Green flag went up and the Crown flag came down
'Twas the neatest and sweetest thing ever you saw
And they played the great game they call Erin Go Bragh.

And faced the machine guns for Erin Go Bragh.
Now one of our leaders was down in Ringsend
For the honour of Ireland to uphold and defend
He had no veteran soldiers but volunteers raw
Playing sweet Mauser music for Erin Go Bragh.
Old Ceannt and his comrades like lions at bay
From the South Dublin Union poured death and dismay
But what was then often the invaders men saw
All the dead khaki soldiers on Erin Go Bragh.
A great foreign captain was raving that day
Saying: "Give me one hour and I'll blow you away"
But a big Mauser bullet got stuck in his jaw
And he died of lead poison on Erin Go Bragh.
A glory to Dublin, to her do renown
In the long generations her fame will go down
And the children will tell how their forefathers saw
The red blaze of freedom o'er Erin Go Bragh.
