Highland Paddy - Irish Folk
Highland Paddy, written by Sean McCarthy.
The song is said to be about a young Irishman returning home from the highlands of Scotland to take part in the 1798 rebellion.
Made famous by The Wolfe Tones on their 1974 album 'Till Ireland A Nation.
Lyrics:
One evening fair as the sun was shining
To Kilkenny I did ride
I did meet with Captain Brady
A tall commander by his side
[Chorus)
Then you are welcome, Highland Paddy
By my side you'll surely stand
Hear the people shout for freedom
We'll rise in the morning with the Fenian band
Rise in the morning with the Fenian band
In the mornin' we rose early
Just before the break of dawn
Blackbirds singing in the bushes
Greetings to a smiling morn'
Gather round me, men of Ireland
Gather Fenians, gather round
Hand to hand with sword and musket
Spill the blood upon this holy ground
[Chorus]
Then you are welcome, Highland Paddy
By my side you'll surely stand
Hear the people shout for freedom
We'll rise in the morning with the Fenian band
Rise in the morning with the Fenian band
There's a glen beside a river
Just outside Kilkenny Town
There I met this noble captain
Men lay dead upon the ground
There's a grave beside a river
A mile outside Kilkenny Town
There we laid our noble captain
Birds were silent when this Fenian died
[Chorus]
Then you are welcome, Highland Paddy
By my side you'll surely stand
Hear the people shout for freedom
We'll rise in the morning with the Fenian band
Rise in the morning with the Fenian band
All my life, I will remember
I'll remember, night and day
That once I rode into Kilkenny
And I heard this noble captain say

Fantastic 😊
❤❤❤
Ronnie was the man for this song.
This does not dissapoint, beautifully carried. Thank you for this, best version.
man, this is insanely good <3
Fair play, this is a brilliant version I’m from Newbrighton across the water from Liverpool and always tried to do this on a guitar… but never really got the feel of it , (very few people do, it usually sounds or ends up as a cheery slightly naff singalong). The solo banjo takes it away from that and brings the story out..the arrangements, key and tone just turns it into the song it was always meant to be… hats off to you,
One of the best rebel singers
One of my faves! Excellent performance.
