While teachers have always been a moral and somewhat of a parental figure... They are now being asked to carry on way too many roles and it is not right.... So many parents use the schools to discipline, diagnose, feed, babysit, parent, guide, etc.....
Last night I was talking with some teachers after subbing all day. We basically said we are a little above babysitter and just below counselor. It's so sad all the "counseling" you have to do in a day. I'm up at 230am thinking about these kids and I'm just a sub!!

As a teacher in Florida I really would like more pay but, considering I just read about the the 8th circuit court granting qualified immunity to a person impersonating a cop, I have little hope for the government acting ethically in regards to anything that will cost money.
The "raises" they gave New Mexico teachers looks good to the public. But behind the scenes they are now laying off teachers, because they really didn't have the funding to give the raises in the first place. So, they are laying off teachers and support staff, which will mean higher student:teacher ratios. We already do not have enough staff to run the school efficiently, and I am starting to think the raise is worth it, and I just might quit anyway! I don't want 30 kids in my classroom, with little support. I do not want to have to fill out unnecessary paperwork in my "free" time, after work. I refuse to take my work home. And I will continue to do so. They can fire me if they choose to!
Update: I have 28 students in my classroom this year. This is the highest number of kids I have ever had. I usually have 18=20. The behaviors are so bad, that I told my principal that I am ready to quit. During the meeting she offered me more support. We'll see if it's enough to keep me. I am willing to give it a shot but I am not sure I will stay.
The biggest problem a teacher has to face is culture. A culture that does not value education. This is not only the administrative body that does not see fit to pay teachers a reasonable rate, but also parents and students. In the district I worked in mostly everything is available to students and parents online. This includes policy, full lessons, study notes, assignments, and grades. Student and parents (if they are paying any attention at all) are informed of this regularly. Despite this and individual meetings with every student I had and contacting parents multiple times or attempts to do so. I still have many students failing simply due to large amounts of missing work that large amount of class time was given to complete. Students choose to avoid work and play on social media as they know even if they are caught there are no repercussions. No one is held accountable especially the students who know they can simply blame the teacher when in fact choices were made by administration and parents to hold students themselves at no accountability. That is not the way a effective system of education works. Everyone is to have a share of the accountability/responsibility for students education. With teachers having it all pinned on them and no one else having to answer for the failures in the system no wonder teacher are saying they have had enough.
I taught in Florida for exactly 4 years. It is where I began my 23-year teaching career which, thankfully, I have ended for other opportunities. I was paid so little in Florida that after I paid my car payment, rent and utilities, I could NOT afford to maintain my car and thus the engine completely died. (just under 29k back then in the very late 90s) I couldn't afford to pay on my student loans and had to defer them. Teaching in Florida provided me with no future so I left.
Why would you buy a car that requires a car payment if your budget is tight? The kids are in school for what 9 months...that is $3,222.00 per month (roughly) more than enough to live on if you budget correctly . Maybe it was poor choices on your part that put you into that position.
@@Ao-pj1mc Teaching is a 12 month salaried position. While teacher can elect to work 10 month contracts. It is expected to be 12 to supplement not having a position in the summer. For a new hire this would be a salary of 2416.50 based on the number you provided. Doable depending on the standard of living in that area but very tight.

You'd think that parents would support compensating their teachers, after having to experience for themselves how difficult it is to teach students. For months, we heard from parents complaining that their kids were at home. Where are those parents supporting the idea of more money being invested in our teachers, more parents standing up and saying," teaching is tough. These teachers are awesome performing a tough job. They need to get paid."
Why are parents and governors used as substitutes? They are not certified nor have teacher licenses, nor even have substitute training. This is what’s wrong with this country. The govt and the public thinks anybody can just replace teachers just like that. Then why do teachers need teaching licenses? And to be taught by unlicensed and uncertified people, kids are not getting the quality education they deserve. Which means the whole purpose of the education system is really to babysit not to promote academics.
Charter schools have never been required to hire certified teachers. In theory, that COULD mean that professional artists could teach art, sports legends could teach PE, piano players could teach piano. I have seen excellent performing arts programs taught by experienced actors for theatre, ballet dancers teaching ballet, etc. On the other hand, I saw a person come in for an interview who justified his interest to teach science with "Well, I've always wanted to swim with the dolphins." This was in Arizona....

the districts do not seem to value retaining teachers that have gained worked experience. this is shown by the fact that there are no performance based or general yearly pay raises.
People working in fast food restaurants don’t need a degree. Teachers needs to have degrees and teachers license. They should be paid as a professional.
@@Ao-pj1mc Most early career teachers are working nights, weekends AND summers nowadays. They are also responsible for attending a lot of training to get up to speed in the field. Many get assigned to teach out of their field and scramble to get content knowledge. Also, when you work 60-70 hour weeks from the middle of July to the end of May, a six week break is just recovery, not a vacation.

A lot of people don't realize that teachers don't just teach kids academics. They are managers too. What other job has entry level positions where 23-year-olds manage 25-30 people? People who's brains haven't fully developed and you work with 25-30 new people every single year.
The goal is to get as many new and unprepared teachers into the school as possible and push out the experienced ones so that administration can fully mold and keep their thumbs over the faculty.
If there were more men in teaching then this wouldn't happen. I left because the women just kept doing more and more and more but weren't getting the financial rewards. I was also asked to do more. When I refused I became a pariah. I went back to running my own business.

I had mostly excellent teachers. Why? I went to a Catholic school in the 1950’s when all our teachers were Dominican nuns, an order whose main mission was education. Pay wasn’t an issue. They had complete support. The non-teaching sisters did all the other work to free up their fellow teaching sisters. I received an excellent education so that when I went to public high school, I went into advanced placement classes.

"Other people's" problems become everybody's problems when we do not help each other. That is the American Way. We come together to help each other. The country was built by folks who teamed up for barn raisings, helping each other with the harvest, all the way to community efforts to build municipal systems to provide clean water, roads, libraries, police and military forces and educational institutions. You may think private schools are better but most people, good hardworking blue-collar people like my folks, could not afford that option. They still worked three jobs and we all worked as well to get through college, one into military service and a year in Iraq.
Only government oversight, no Unions, no pensions, allow for labor hour only contracting, work a minimum 2020 hours a year and permit performance based (parents & gov oversight) firings you got a deal. Teachers will make bank if their any good, because only the best will survive in this system and thrive. Work when you want, have all the babies you want, come and go as you want. But it's up to you to get your own health care and save for retirement.

thats actually for 10 months of work, not for 12 months. teachers spread it out over 12 months. and with rents being as high as they are now, teachers struggle imagine making 60K in california or New York. you would not save any money at all and would have to struggle to make rent. In summer, it is nice because we can actually put our work away after eight hours. During the school year most of us work 10-14 hours per day.
@Ao5884, teaching is not by far a part time job. It is a career that is very difficult to even do. You have to be extremely dedicated to your craft to even perfect it. Also teachers only get paid for 9 months and in the summer time we are asked to attend workshops, conferences, and seminars to improve our craft to making sure that each child gets the best education that they deserve. Even if I can't even pay my own rent or other bills.... Teachers should be valued for the work they contribute to society as a whole...
Depends on where you live. I did not reach that salary in my state until I had 34 years of experience and a master's degree. And there is nothing part time about teaching.

Who’s not in the classroom? I retired after 42 years of teaching while working two-three part-time jobs and full-time in the summer. Why? Not for the pathetically low pay, but because I’m a life-long single who could do it, and I loved the job. Most people cannot do as I did and quite a few don’t love the job. Like any other job, you get what you pay for with a few exceptions-like me! If you want more excellent teachers, you need to pay for them and to treat them like professionals.
Over paided daycare workers (Teacher) cry every year for more pay. But they only work 9 months of the year for 60k year. No daycare worker( Teachers) are required to take work home with them. Prove me wrong. There are many other fields of work go find a new job.

I am just a sub but called a student's bluff today and sent student to the office. Almost perfect class after that!!

Truer words were never spoken. Then they increase wages for NEW teachers so that inexperienced teachers come in but experienced teachers leave.

I like the idea of the governor signing up to volunteer sub but if the schools are anything like where I live, that offer won't be valid for long!

They should not have interviewed the librarian… Now that people have been forced to be home with their own children 24 hours a day, we should all KNOW that teachers should make at least twice as much! 😜
Teaching other`s kids is`nt the same as being home with your own kids 24/7. 7 hours a day in a structured class room with kids you aren`t really that concerned about is`nt nearly as hard.
Frankly I’m impressed with the schools they were filming because these students are actually seeming to do their work!! Most don’t most just goof off

Guys honestly think back on all your grade school teachers and you'll likely notice that you had a small hand-full of good teachers and a majority of terrible teachers.
The same could be said about any profession.
Honestly, they were all pretty fine.
I had mostly excellent teachers. Why? I went to a Catholic school in the 1950’s when all our teachers were Dominican nuns, an order whose main mission was education. Pay wasn’t an issue. They had complete support. The non-teaching sisters did all the other work to free up their fellow teaching sisters. I received an excellent education so that when I went to public high school, I went into advanced placement classes.

UNFAIR WAGES! Public school teachers make more than the fair market value of teaching services, as set forth by LEGITIMATE PRIVATE SCHOOL EDUCATORS. Most of the people, being taxed, to pay public school teachers, WANT NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM.
Do you have any idea how much money it costs to educate a special education student, or a child with severe emotional issues, or children who have recently arrived in the US and have no English AND who were not in school in their home country? How about the price it takes to lure a person with physics training or a the ability to teach PE in a safe way? By the way, private schools do not have to hire certified teachers who get trained for these kinds of jobs.

@@vickiebarbee9669 I do not have any children but I gladly pay taxes to support public schools. Education IS national security. "Other people's" problems become everybody's problems when we do not help each other. That is the American Way. We come together to help each other. The country was built by folks who teamed up for barn raisings, helping each other with the harvest, all the way to community efforts to build municipal systems to provide clean water, roads, libraries, police and military forces and educational institutions. You may think private schools are better but most people, good hardworking blue-collar people like my folks, could not afford that option. They still worked three jobs and we all worked as well to get through college, one into military service and a year in Iraq.

Only government oversight, no Unions, no pensions, allow for labor hour only contracting, work a minimum 2020 hours a year and permit performance based (parents & gov oversight) firings you got a deal. Teachers will make bank if their any good, because only the best will survive in this system and thrive. Work when you want, have all the babies you want, come and go as you want. But it's up to you to get your own health care and save for retirement.

yeah and the rest of us don't work multiple jobs or bring work home the only difference is all other professions are full time employees not part time employees. Please remember the teachers Union pushed to close schools and keep them closed during the "pandemic"..
You have no idea how hard that job is. Even without a second job, and after 34 years of doing it, I was still only getting 3 hours of sleep a night on a daily basis.
@@Meyersci maybe you are just not proficient at your part time job.. Every job is hard/difficult the only difference is most jobs are full time and don't come with teacher books with all the answer in it.
@@iliebelieveme502 Thanks, I needed a good laugh today. Every job is hard. I loaded rail cars with hydrofluoric acid for five years before I taught school. It was a full acid suit, south Texas heat, 12 hour rotating shift job. It was easier than teaching school.

The Average salary for a teacher is roughly 61k/year roughly 14k above the national average for everyone. Thats not bad for a part time job.
thats actually for 10 months of work, not for 12 months. teachers spread it out over 12 months. and with rents being as high as they are now, teachers struggle imagine making 60K in california or New York. you would not save any money at all and would have to struggle to make rent. COSTS HAVE GONE WAY UP.
@@baldeagle4710 I don’t know what universe you come from! Teachers in my state get three weeks off, not two months! Just because there are students present does not mean we aren’t working. In summer, it is nice because we can actually put our work away after eight hours. During the school year most of us work 10-14 hours per day.

@Ao5884, teaching is not by far a part time job. It is a career that is very difficult to even do. You have to be extremely dedicated to your craft to even perfect it. Also teachers only get paid for 9 months and in the summer time we are asked to attend workshops, conferences, and seminars to improve our craft to making sure that each child gets the best education that they deserve. Even if I can't even pay my own rent or other bills.... Teachers should be valued for the work they contribute to society as a whole...
Depends on where you live. I did not reach that salary in my state until I had 34 years of experience and a master's degree. And there is nothing part time about teaching.

Who’s not in the classroom? I retired after 42 years of teaching while working two-three part-time jobs and full-time in the summer. Why? Not for the pathetically low pay, but because I’m a life-long single who could do it, and I loved the job. Most people cannot do as I did and quite a few don’t love the job. Like any other job, you get what you pay for with a few exceptions-like me! If you want more excellent teachers, you need to pay for them and to treat them like professionals.

Over paided daycare workers (Teacher) cry every year for more pay. But they only work 9 months of the year for 60k year. No daycare worker( Teachers) are required to take work home with them. Prove me wrong. There are many other fields of work go find a new job.
Hmmm, could you manage a dozen or so infants and toddlers? Crying, needing rocking, holding, bottle feeding, hand feeding, diaper changing? For 8-10 hours per day? And no, daycare centers do not run nine months per year! Parents work all year; so does daycare!
