I work with delivery on my bike monday to monday, around 80km per Day. Those are somethimgs I learn on The process:
You must eat protein after The Last ride of the Day to not lose strength and to not feel that you are not inprooving. Eat carbohidrates as break fast and dinner, allways, never skip. Water by itself do not rehidrate, You gonna need isotonic to not feel weak The next Day. To prevent and treat pain, stretch up, but only when warmed up or on a Hot shower.
It Has helped me a lot, and I hope to be usefull for you all as well. Thanks

Exactly, riding it with a comfortable saddle and gears would be much easier. I ride my XC full suspension hard, but it is so universal for everyday commutes. It's a carbon frame with an aluminium triangle, weighs 11.8 kgs. This weight part is very important and it's a 29er fs, it does everything. But I do get the fixies, it just isn't for me. Oh, yeah, most important thing riding long - MUST. EAT.

Did 30-60 miles daily for 2 ½ years in LA on a fixed gear, 12 miles to school, 12 miles back, 4 miles to work, after work got out went for a quick ride with work friends, on weekends would cruise through palos verdes or ride the bike paths or both, ate huge meals throughout everyday and passed out from exhaustion every night, didn't do much homework but I lost 35 lbs and felt incredible 😅

It's not that hard, have worked for a delivery company for the past 3 months, delivering with a fixie and do at least 50km a day (4 hours of work). If your fixie is light it's very much doable. My riding conditions include hills and whatnot, not just flats.

what do you do for sweat? how much do you have to carry? I'm looking to start commuting on my hybrid as well, but it'll have to be in uniform and I can't shower at school. Plus I'll have a bag of about 5-10 KG w me, I'll hopefully get a frame bag soon to use instead of a backpack

@@aurboda I just sink wash at work and use some deodorant. I have a Trade job so I change into uniform at work. I just haul my lunch and some tools. But 4 days a week I ride a cargo bike and haul two kids with their lunch's and back packs. That's a load but its only about 3 miles and I unload them.
I like a front basket. More option with that than a frame bag.

Zack, do you think a shorter distance per day might have been sustainable? Or maybe 20 mi ( ~32km) for 20 days followed by a rest day or two then repeat would have been a way to complete your experiment? I like the idea to create a challenge to make riding interesting, particularly here in the US NW where rain is frequent during 6 mos. of the year. Gives some motivation to get out the door... I particularly like the conditioning / fitness aspect of your experiment. Has given me an idea to try this coming rainy season with hopes of a stronger riding season next year! Thanks for the idea and inspiration.

@@anthonyp1300 Everyone will tell you something different. My experience, I've been strict vegan since high school, not to mention poor af through that time. I've competed in tri's and ultras on beans + rice and every type of fruit, veggie, and seed the dollar stores sell. I don't recommend buying crap produce, but if that's the only option you'll still be on top.
If you put in 200 mile weeks, beans + rice will keep you going. The above and beyond comes from the more specialized foods like cocoa/hemp/quinoa or more expensive veggies like mushrooms/beets/kale and so forth.
If you're young, eat all the veggies your mom gives you. If you're older, juice or blend everything into a shake. Just get used to eating more diverse types of whole foods... flavoring is key to enjoying it. Cheers mate

Zach, thank you very much for sharing your challenge and insights. I set out for a somewhat similar challenge, 12,000 miles in 12 months. I could not ride every day, and the heat here in Texas just ended 16 consecutive days of 100+ degrees. The extreme heat definitely saps energy and motivation. And as many have commented, diet and hydration are vitally important. Your vlog also importantly draws out that riding becomes very difficult when riding is not fun but more a laborious effort to complete a challenge. Getting out the door on most days is more than half the battle; but then the adventure and enjoyment of being outdoors begins. Almost 8,900 miles on Strava, year to date. Being able to relate to your experiences on the 30 day challenge has in its own way served to motivate me. Thanks!!!

Kinda close to my daily commute (almost 40km back and forth) for 2 years or so, kinda mandatory due to crowded buses options instead. Gotta say, It gets tiring time to time but, somehow, i couldn't get way of my bike for more than one week. I think the good balance is to find a way to keep the fun throught the week... For me, for example, is going slower, enjoying the view, changing the route a little, going faster once in a while. Then week is over, i get a rest for the weekend and there we go all over again. I definitely got used to. Can't wait to get a new job and take this routine back. Keep up with the great content, Zack! Peace.

I used to commute to work by bike 24 miles a day. I did have a car and used it a couple of times here and there but for the most part (around 90% of the time) I rode my bike, rain or shine. In addition, I would usually do one weeknight ride with friends after work for about 30 miles and I also had weekends off and would ride faster, longer distances on those days. I would typically ride 250-280 miles every week.

Great video man!! Never did the 30 Miles for 30 Days thing but a couple of years ago (I think it was in 2017?) I set a goal for myself to average 20 miles a day for an entire year. There were a few days where I rode less than that and also quite a few days where I didn't ride at all but there were also many days where my typical ride distance was about 30-35 miles and also many days (mainly on weekends) where I rode 45, 50, 60 miles and even more. So at the end of the year it worked out that I averaged 19.86 miles for every day of the year. I felt really good about it although I wish I had actually done the 20.0 mile per day average (if not more). Oh and about the point you made about starting each day and just getting your butt out the door - I TOTALLY agree and know this all too well!!!! (been struggling with this forever myself. LOL)
    Cheers man 👍

Yes. Getting on the bike is often the tough part. I knock out 20 miles before work 3x/week. But getting on a bike at 5:30am takes some self discipline. 120-140 miles on weekends is equally tough. But like you, I would be hard-pressed to ride late in the day. Today’s long Saturday ride started at 8am.
If you think you need rest, rest. You’re tired for a reason.

The weather here (WA) in the normally wet month of February just went through an entire ten day (mostly) dry stretch, so I just finished up ten days of averaging 30 miles (rides of 2x25, 4x28, 2x30, 1x40, 1x55) at between 14 and 14.5 MPH. I think I'm probably gonna get rained out tomorrow, otherwise my legs could probably say yes to yet another ride. Honestly, my legs felt the worst on day eight, and that wasn't even the day after I went out and rode 55 miles. I'm not sure I could keep this up for another three weeks, but I also never thought I'd even be able to do it for ten days, so...
You're right about doing the rides in the morning though. I wake up, have a cup of coffee, a bite to eat, and then it's time to get up and go. I've done enough fasted riding that I don't have to worry too much about stuffing myself with carbs just to ride at a moderate pace.

.....I've done 20-32 miles a day for the past 100 days, but there is NO WAY I could do that in heat. I ride at 4:00 am in the upper Midwest when temperatures are rather pleasant and winds tend to be lighter. I do this on a Wabi Classic.

I rode 3,000km in June. So that’s 100km per day. 62 miles per day. In and around Paris. And I loved it. Usually ride 2,000-2,500km every month. For pleasure (and a bit of commuting) 0 rest day. And some pretty Brutal Rides. 4x80km hardcore every week.

A also recently had a goal to ride every day of August, for the same reason as you. I did not set a distance goal though. Just got out on the bike and enjoyed it as much as possible. This really boosted my mood. Eventually I had to stop because I sliced my finger. People don't understand how you can love something and still struggle to get out and do it.

I'm doing the same for November, decided to make it at least an hour each ride. Almost done, 5 days to go, only missed one day. Most of my rides are now a bit longer, with some 20/25 milers in there. I've lost weight, my mood has been great, definitely tired but I'm gonna keep doing it. To top it off it's the crappiest weather this month in Seattle.

I rode 15 miles to work each day for 3 years, so 30 miles a day 5x a week.
Honestly it's not that bad, about an hour each way. It's way easier when it's not 30 miles straight.
Brakeless fixed gear for 2 years of the 3 but didn't make much of a difference because it was mostly flat.
The only times I was exhausted was when trying to go as fast as possible on the way home haha.
Once I took 3 months off and was able to get back into shape in about a week.

Used to ride 300 miles a week. Probably not advisable. It's called overtraining. Can't imagine dealing with that heat. Varying the route, even reversing it helps. You're so right about getting going. Winter especially is hard with so much fussy clothing to put on. No winter there! Just an old retired guy, faster and more relaxed than 10 years ago. You've created a monster with decades of experience!

Omg dude. I cannot overstate how happy I am that you took those rest days. Please talk to a cycling/endurance coach *who knows your local climate* if you plan on doing that long term. I’m not joking, it was actually super risky to just try to brute-force that and it could’ve turned out way way worse than it did. Like “30 miles every day, fixed gear” is already a biiiiig workout, but add in the heat and you’re literally at the point where you have to think about things like electrolytes, and whether your body is adequately processing them, or else you risk seriously damaging your kidneys over time, to say nothing of the risks to your joints and connective tissue. Once you get past a certain point of exercise frequency and intensity you have to treat your body like you’re an athlete training for an event and dial in the necessary recovery and resources, or else you can very easily mess yourself up long-term.

110 minutes at around zone 2 (Intensity factor ~.65) is about 77 tss a day. That comes out to 540 tss a week. This is a doable amount of tss for most people that exercise regularly. My guess is that zac's intensity factor was a bit higher than this, and he has not trained in a consistent manner to allow him to train at this amount of tss.

I live in Seoul and often ride at -10 ºC but the bike paths near the river are great and I find much pleasant riding in the cold than in the heat. I'm just in day 4 and the worsdt part is having to save 3 consecutive hours for this weird hobby I got for 2022.

Two points when it comes to biking for a long time and always being motivated.
I don't get why you have to be a tyrant to yourself with a challenge like this -- Setting a goal way above your means or working hard instead of smart.
Firstly, take one step at a time. 10 day challenge. Unlock experience point to improve and unlock a 3 week challenge after that. Conquer it and take a bigger step. I started with a 180 km flat ride over 2 days. Then 210 km uphill ride over 3 days. I swapped out the old 25 kg bike, for a new 13 kg touring bike. Then a 1000 km bikepacking over 6 days. Now I'm planning a trip twice as long. Take steps, learn from your experience and you can eventually succeed at any goal.
Secondly, temptations. Why? Why work hard, when you can work smart? I.e. why exert your limited willpower, when you can spend that same energy on the essential task - biking for a long time. This is something Ultra Light backpackers know all about. Remove every distraction and faff through your day. What is the bare minimum you need to bike for a long time? A bike. What more? Some place to sleep, water bottles and an extra tube. That's it. No distractions. No glamping. No frills. Just bike for the whole day in tranquility. Food you buy along the road. If your only choice when you wake up, is to bike, then it becomes very very easy.
    Happy biking.

As someone who's happily made cycling the center of my life (aside from my day job) for years now and who periodically blows his friends off to go for long ass solo rides because he's antisocial by nature, your experience does not compute with me haha. But I understand that everyone is different, and the fact that you put all your miles in on a fixie must've made it much harder than this challenge seems in my head. That, and cycling in the Taiwan heat and humidity. Good on you for listening to your body and doing what makes you happy though.
