While there are no definitive rules, aside from the obvious of updating it when there is a career or business change, I advise updating it every few months to test different messaging and see if you get better, more consistent leads and connections.
I had the chance to have professional photos done and use a variety of them as my social media profile pics. I think they came out great and I just so happened to wear a color used in my logo, happy accident.
