Great video but what about this situation.. Engl Artist Edition going into a Marshall JCM 900. What if you only have one 4x12? One amp would be left without a speaker load. 🤷🏻♂️
Can you run a slave a little practice amp running from a vox da5 little practice amp, by running out of the headphone jack, line out, into an effects loop on a monoprice 15 watt tube amp,I don't want to blow up the tube amp,but I'm trying to find out, if I have to plug in the input from the da5 into the monoprice send on the effects loop while I plug the line out of the da5 into the return on the monos effects loop, pedals don't have that serious volume problem of the output of the da5,I'm not looking to increase volume, but just to get the sound of this small amp and it effects on board, to run thru a power amp,I do have a couple of solid state power amps,I would be willing to try this on, thanks for any reply from anyone.
? Greetings o. Great Video, thanks. I have a question: Does that mean I can connect a lead from the SEND of a guitar amp into the Power AMP in of another guitar amp, to use both? Let's say from the send of a Fender Mustang GT 100 into the Power AMP in of a Fender Deluxe 112 plus? Thank you and all the best furthermore.
I've been slaving an Archon 25 into a Dual Rec Rev G with 6l6s or my Mark V 90 with EL34s. Sounds awesome. But. I kind of want to see what the DR would sound like through 5881s. Just for the f of it. If I just want to get just the pre-amp of the DR, I would go the effects loop route, eh? I haven't really found too many examples of higher wattage amps slaving into lower wattage amps, so I don't know if it's safe to do. 25w vs 100w and all. Would this be a mad experiment gone wrong? I'd have to have both hooked up to speakers, so I'd probably have the Archon speaker in another room.
I think amp slaving is the way Peter Frampton got his incredible stage sound. He ran his normal 100 watt Marshalls and split the line out and ran them into two Leslies. Maybe not a metal sound but awesome mix of distortion and clean modulation.
Here is something I wanted to try: A joyo bantamp mjolnir going into an affordable combo amp, with both going into another, more powerful combo, but one thing that I found interesting is that one of my favorite bands apparently amp slaves, but in between the power amp and the cab, the guitarist uses some form of eq so that his tone doesn't sound like a telephone. How would one use an eq in between the cab and head?.
can I "slave" a Marshall 8100 (100W solid state) into a JCM600 (60W Tube) via the effects loops, and should I be concerned regarding the wattage difference? It is a SS into a Tube...
Hey man thanks for this video! But Ok, here is a big question, I just purchased a mesa mk5 25 head, and I came up with the crazy idea of slaying it to my Marshall jcm 2000 SL super lead , then on stereo to my 4x12 on one input, then my katakana head into the other input of the cab, then use the a b y foot switch, and use the two tube heads in a channel and the katakana on its own on the b channel and merge the three heads into ONE ✊🏻, is that a good idea? Thanks In advanced, and is that something you would try or do? Even if it’s crazy and greedy, is it even worth the try?
Ryan! I have a question, I am currently awaiting the delivery of my single rec 50 and I wanted to ask, if I use the slave out for recording with a cabinet attached can I turn the master all the way down and still get a signal? Asking bc I don't want to buy a load box, awesome channel btw!!!
You can slave the preamp as you describe in the video, but I have always thought slaving generally refers to sending the speaker out into a load box and then taking the line out from the Load box and sending it to the power section of another amp to either boost reduce the full amp tone of the original amp. The second amp becomes a master volume for the first amp, giving you full tone at any volume.
Not slaving. Slaving in archaic terms is running one amps preamp into another amps power amp. Simple as that. I like to run solid state amps into an effects loop thats tube powered. A good amp to use for this kind of thing is the peavey 260 series monitor. 1000% better than using pedal eq. Don't have to worry about having a speaker hooked up to the ss either. There's so many different ways to set up slaving but generally it consist of using one part of an amp to enhance another in modern terms. Personally I think using two different two amps for slaving is lame but to each his own. Reamping is the auto tune of rock.
Plauge can you help a guy out please! Are you familiar with Sunn Beta Leads? On the back their is 4 groups of 2 outputs + inputs. Googling a picture would probably be more helpful than me describing it Output group 1: 2 outputs for speakers that reads 4 ohms 100 watts max Output group 2: bold letters say MASTER ACCESSORY one output says "master line out. To." and the other output says "power amp line in. From" Output group 3: bold letters says CHANNEL A ACCESSORY one output says "preamp line out. To" and the other output says "master line in. From" Output group 4: is the EXACT same as group 3 but reads CHANNEL B ACCESSORY instead. I want the tone of the Beta into the 4X12 i use for it but also want to use my orange cr120 2x12 combo as a slave. The CR120 has an effects loop. Is it possible? Please reply I cannot find any answers anywhere
Good video! My Q is, If I have 3 identical Marshall JVM 100w heads, and full speaker stacks to go for all 3 heads, How do I send a signal to the next powered head, and so forth down the line- so they all work? I just need a simple line out from_____, to the input________ of amp #2
Just get a splitter box and run your guitar signal into each. Kinda like stereo. 3 amps into each other will sound awful. Run a triple stereo will sound so full and amazing .set your tones different
Another quick question. I play my guitar in to my computer using a di box, and then use impulse responses, and send the almost 0 lag guitar riffs to my rocket 8 monitors. Now all I want to do is use my Mesa duel Rec. And my 4x12 cab. When I play through the computer alone, it sounds amazing, but I'm missing something. I want to incorporate my real mesa somehow to really crank it up. Any suggestions?
get a re-amp box. it turns a line signal into an instrument signal, so plug an output from the intrerface into the reamp box, and reamp box into the amp.
Ok so couple more question If my mesa is 90 watts and my Marshall is 50 watts and I slave my mesa to the Marshall does that mean i only get 50 watts? Or do i get more overall watts because both amps are tied together. Now since both amps are tied together and i have 2 16 ohm cabs does each vab just plug into 16ohms on the amps. Again thanks so much for your help your channel is super informative 🤘
50 watts (the wattage of the power amp you are slaving to). 16 ohms go into 16 ohm outputs. Recommend that you use two 16 ohm outputs to run the cabs in parallel.
Would it be safe to use an effects unit/amp sim (Line 6 POD HD400) for amp slaving into a head amp? The head amp is plugged into an Orange PPC412 so I'd imagine you would bypass the IR in the processor. I'm somewhat new to using amp slaving but want to try it
HI there Thanx for that video, I had that idea for my mark 5/35 wich is great! But too wick for a thrash metal band. So I wanted to slave it to A powerball to get the 6L6 power section of that one. As the MarK as a switch off for the cab. I think It will be good... but How can i use my effect on the loop as it is used. Thanx for the reply (the mini mark as a headphone output too, maybe I should use it)... What do you think ?
+Oliv Shark The headphone output probably has a cab sim enabled, so I would avoid it. To keep effects in the loop, have the Mark V FX send go through your pedals or processor, then send that to FX return of your powerball. Of course, make sure there is a dummy or speaker load on the Mark V. Hope this helps!
For most amps with a headphone out, my answer is no. I would have to look at the Katana, but nearly all amps with a headphone jack includes a cabinet emulation or EQ curve that would make plugging into a power amp sound horrible. If you can switch that feature off, then that would work.
Might be the way I think about it but, I think this might work metal best but not so sure about in general. Depending how you play the distortion is going to react differently. Left alone the amp. I think is worth recording distortion and effects separately if possible (delay, reverb, etc). If you have a choice to change amps later on the process it leads to a lot of headaches later by just trying different sounds. Time we could have spent improving that part. If you recorded one sound that's it no way to change it later. Move on. If you have the option later you are going to suffer a lot. Also, if you later you decide another sound you should be able to find it and play it again. Just like you should be able to do it live. I know this is standard practice in a lot of places but I really don't understand how hard is to record a part again if we are recording home. If we were on an expensive studio that would be other story.
I want to use two amps as my amp. I like the sound of my Deluxe reverb. I have a powerful Boss 100 watt amp with 1x12. So, I have 2x12's, lots of power and a cool Tube Amp sound. How do I turn it all into one powerful cool sounding amp? Be very specific on input jacks and output jacks & where they are located (I get confused with the term 'return' as my Deluxe has no input or output labeled 'return'. ) Just tell me where to plug the cords. I have a Marshall Power Brake if I need that to complete this 'transaction'.
If its a Boss Katana and you want to use that as an FRFR solution you can do that with your Deluxe but yeah not sure..If you like your Deluxe what are you trying to get out of the BOSS? I hav a Deluxe and love it as is....Im not sure what your asking though. I was thinking of using my Bad Cat Hot Cat as I always do live but utilize extra monitors with those digital Katanas FRFR which I understand can be done. ..
Hey Ryan, I recently had an idea and wanted to ask you whether it would theoretically be possible or not: Guitar going into a signal splitter with signal A going into a 6505+ and Signal B into a JCM 800. The JCM Preamp is then going into the 6505+ Poweramp (Giving it a 6L6 sound kinda like Dino Cazares old modded Marshalls) while the 6505+ Preamp goes into the Marshall Poweramp (essentially making it a 6534) . Both Amps are turned on at the same time, going into two different cabs which are both recorded simultaneously (of course with two or four separate mics and some kind of wall to prevent bleed from the other cab). Wouldn't that theoretically give me a kind of "fake double tracking" (since it is one take that also isn't reamped) that I could then pan left and right for rhythm?
Assuming this setup plays nicely (in my experience, some buffered FX loops don't like that criss cross configuration you're describing), this will not achieve a double tracked sound. It will be like playing through two amps on different sides of a room simultaneously. The tonal difference will create a wider sound stage when hard panned, but it will still sound like one guitar. You will still need to double / quad track, or fake it with a pedal or plugin.
Hey There Brother enjoy your video you sound like you know pretty much what's going on so here's what what I'm trying to do I've got a TC electronic mimiq pedal without having to go through my pedalboard which is going into the front of the amp can I run it between two amps and get to stereo effect through my effects Loop I would appreciate your comment thanks brother
I've never used a Mimiq, though its premise is extremely interesting for one-guitar bands. I suppose how you place it in your signal chain depends on what amps and effects you're using, and what sound you're going for. Are any of the pedals in front of your amps stereo? You could run any stereo units directly after the Mimiq. Or, if you want to bypass them completely, an AB box of sorts might be the trick. I've heard the Mimiq doesn't sound great in FX loops as it's expecting a clean instrument level input, so I would throw out that option.
Ok this was all a recent revelation for me, so I have a Randall RG3003H, and a Marshall DSL100, are you saying I can slave one into the other but need an attenuator for 1 or both heads? I love the power and tone of the tube but really love the high gain distortion the Randall supplies, also, does it change the sound depending on which one is the slave, or it's the same regardless, sorry to ask so much, I honestly dont know, trying to figure this out, thank you so much for your assistance
What if... I have a Marshall DSL 20H and a HB G212 Vintage, while I also have a line6 spider IV 75w... I'd like to try this method, but I want to have the HB cabinet to work, and mute the loudspeaker of the line6. How can I achieve this? According to Your picture, which one would be the master, which one would be the slave, and which loudspeaker/cabinet would sound? Thx for Your response.
What sound are you trying to achieve? Putting the spider through the 2x12 cabinet? If so, run the FX send from the spider to the return of the Marshall (assuming it has one).
@@PlagueScytheStudios The line6 has a line out, while the marshall has an FX send and return. For the sound... I don't know yet, just wanna test. What happens, If I use the spider line out to the return of the marshall? Which tone will dominate? The modeler or the tube amp? Thx update: of course the sound of the marshall is demanded :) (I just read about Metallica slaving amps for improving tone)
I'm a bit confused. I just saw a video where John Petrucci's tech uses Amp 1 (left side of stage), whose Effect Loop Send goes into John's Axe FX, which its stereo output then goes into Effects Loop Return of his Amp 2 (right side of stage) and is used as power amp that then is connected to his cabinets. There was no attenuation mentioned at all. Does the Axe FX already have one, or is this set up something completely different? Thanks
+The Electrocist You don't have to attenuate when using FX loops, especially between between two models of the same amp (unless there's a severe imbalance in levels, which shouldn't happen). All he's essentially doing is splitting the preamp of his Mesa Boogie Mark IIC and AXE FX signal into two identical rigs in stereo.
OK, so hypothetically if I had to identical amps I can do a stereo set up by having a cable from Amp 1 Effect Loop Send into effect pedals, then with a ABY box, have that connect to the Effect Loop Return of Amp 2? And I take it this is still very different from Slaving? Thanks
+The Electrocist Yes you can absolutely do that, it's essentially an analogue version of JP's setup. You could classify that as slaving since it's the preamp of one head into the power amp of another, but it's a different application than what it's generally used for (stereo rig vs a louder mono rig)
I have a 50w marshal combo that I absolutely love the sound of, but it needs to be louder for live shows. How exactly would I run that into my half stack without altering the tone too much?
+Joe That depends on which model of Marshall it is. If you can access the speaker outputs like I can on mine, you may be able to just connect your 4x12 cab and get what you need even though you aren't using more power. If not, you would run the FX send on the Marshall to the FX return of your half stack. You're going to color the Marshall sound with the power amp of the slave amp, however. If you're that concerned about preserving your tone, the best thing is just micing the cab over the front of house speakers.
I had this problem back in the late 80's with my Mesa/Boogie 50 caliber. He's 100% right about using the F/X return of the second amp if it has a effects loop but you have to be mindful of the level from and to the inputs whatever they are. If you want volume with that low bedroom practicing volume tone you need a minimum of 250 watts RMS. A separate power amp with at least a volume knob. Some Marshalls have a effects loop that will work or you have to buy a attenuator for those without an effects loop. Run your Pre-amp into the power section of the second or buy a power amp of at least 250 watts RMS. The RMS is the true rating. Heavier or really bassie guitar tones needs more like 400 watts RMS. I don't mean to hi-jack this post sorry if I seem to be. I do not mean to and I do respect your channel I just had the same exact problem and a lot of people asking me about my tone and volume back then. I love talking tone with tone lovers not just players. It's a sickness and my rig still sounds great. It's changed since then but back then I ran my Mesa into the front of a 125 watt RMS Randall R100 I think. I used a dummy 8ohm 50 watt resistor(I made) and used the effects loop send output into the Randall. I had much more tone using the Randall's tone section. I had the exact same tone Anthrax had in the early days like the MOD stuff used for the Headbangers Ball intro. I then built a Boogie based amp/rack using a QSC850 I think. It was a stereo power amp rated at 425 watts at 4ohms a side which is what a JCM900 4X12 cab can handle. Most think it can't but it can and I still have two of the three I had. If you need more volume then that your deaf. I had to modify the cab so it wouldn't fartout but my volume was ballsout if not scary. We'd get stopped at the studio with quetions about my tone. I can't full credit for my buddy and I were always trying to out do each other. We've cracked roofs and basement walls it when we played Machine Head's "Thousand Lies" or "Down to None" can't remember the song names now but yeah we hurt people with our tone.
Great advice all around! Matching FX loops levels as close as possible is always important whether it be for slaving, reamping through modelers, or using it with time based effects pedals.
Thanks man. It's all honest truth. I've spent thousands on gear mainly at the stuff you get deceived into or by my own hard on for a shiny face amp. Had two Trips and three cabs at practice/on stage but it sounded dry next to my rig offstage which was a Rockmaster through a M100 which I modded to 160 watts RMS with KT88's. It's not Fredrik's tone but it's "My" tone. Great direction your taking with your channel. I like talking tone no I love talking tone SRV to Zep,Skinlab to Meshuggah,Trouble to Down and the Dime through time. Met him a few times just talked guitars he used big power amps to. Gotta stop ramblin on. Talk at you
+Gear Head Productions As long as it's from an FX send, raw output (slave out on Mesa amps), or a DI box, you can send that signal anywhere. You will just need a cabinet simulation plugin afterwards.
Plague Scythe Studios thank you for your reponse! Also, should I use a speaker cable or just normal instrument cable? I'm assuming a normal instrument cable because the extra shielding
@@PlagueScytheStudios so the slave out is how I safely run the second half of a full stack? straight from slave out ( of a triple rec ) into second cab?
Hetfield had practically every Marshall he ever used modded, and an FX Loop or isolated power amp input was probably one of them. He even had the Mesa Mark IV modded into a standalone pre amp on black album.
Ok so I'm new to this running 2 amps at once but it's something I'd like to try. So i have the Mark V 90 head and a Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 with a 4×12 cab @ 16ohm and a 2×12 cab @ 16 or 4ohm. I play Punk thrash crossover. The mesa has slave out on back. What would be the best way to connect these amps to get the best from both and have both cabs producing sound. Hope to hear from you! Just want a bigger sound. Thanks!
+Music Theory That depends on what sound you're going for. Do you like the blend of both heads? An ABY box would be your ticket there. Do you want your Mark V through both cabs, or your Marshall through both cabs? That's where slaving comes in.
Plague Scythe Studios Thanks for the reply! What if I used a chorus pedal and send both outputs of the pedal to inputs of both heads to run at tje same time? Maybe dial the marshall to a low gain since they will be both running in unison and switch normal between my mesa?
Plague Scythe Studios one last question So I'd use the mesa for my main tone and switchin. 80% is heavy distortion playing but theres a few small spots of semi clean playing. If the marshall is all time on what would you recommend for the setting on Marshall? Maybe a mild overdrive? I don't need pristine cleans
I hate how soulless music has become even with something as organic as guitar with all of the impulse shit and processing. Call me old fashioned but I much prefer recording the real way with real amps, minimal extra tracking and such. This is why all the new metal bands sound like the same brand of vanilla ice cream
Metal bands all sound the same because metal in general all sounds the same. It has nothing to do with the recording process, and everything to do with the genre and the musicians. You can still use impulses and make it sound completely different. Just use different impulses and less common amps.
Wrong. Metallica did NOT slave into Marshall’s. It’s an Internet myth. Read the Sweet silence notes again. They slaved into Boogie power amps on AJFA only.
Reamping is bad IMO. Ruins the feel. It's basicly just studio debauchery!!! Slaving IMO is very useful for being unique. But they're definitely two different things like you said rofl.
Amp slaving is not always the preferred solution...i have a Mark V and it has a slave out...however when i use my setup I run my mark v through a G force effects and then out to two amps(in true stereo)..the loop return of my Mark V and the loop return of a TSL100...this could not be done with the slave out...the slave out would give you the effects (and a signal to send to the Marshal but this would be mono...the only way to keep stereo is to run the outs from the Geforce to the effects return on both amps,,,this gives stereo...the Slave will not work in stereo because you would have to feed the line back through the Mesa..causing that ground loop issue you warned of. (the slave is a nice way to easily split a mono signal to send to another amp but if you are like me and want stereo then the slave out is unusable (only for those with mono setups and no way to switch signals except for the Mark V...I have other units that do switching...the g force is wonderful for creating a stereo signal path and has a variable power section to help work with most amp types
Can I slave a Tube and SS amp? For example, I have a dual rectifier and a randall 1503h, and I want to slave the 1503h to a dual rect, how do I connect these amps by using the FX loop that you were saying?
You and Mr. Englund are my go to guys for metal.....

Thanx for the reply, yes there is a resistive load on the mark. now I know how to do it ! great channel keep it up!
thank you very much!!!
Hello Can I use the head phone output from my katana 50 amp(since it has no send port) to a return head in my half stack laney? Thanks
For most amps with a headphone out, my answer is no. I would have to look at the Katana, but nearly all amps with a headphone jack includes a cabinet emulation or EQ curve that would make plugging into a power amp sound horrible. If you can switch that feature off, then that would work.
Love High on Fire!
What? Just use a pedal that splits the guitar signal into the input of both? You need to be more specific on what you want to happen.
@@PlagueScytheStudios Ah thanks, was just curious since I'm quite new when it comes to tube Amps (Used a Boss Katana up until now)
Hey There Brother enjoy your video you sound like you know pretty much what's going on so here's what what I'm trying to do I've got a TC electronic mimiq pedal without having to go through my pedalboard which is going into the front of the amp can I run it between two amps and get to stereo effect through my effects Loop I would appreciate your comment thanks brother
@alan wake thanks man👍👍👍
@alan wake will do👍
Thx
update: of course the sound of the marshall is demanded :) (I just read about Metallica slaving amps for improving tone)
@@PlagueScytheStudios Hey Ryan, could You help out with the further quesion below?
Thank you
I'm a bit confused.
Ah, I think I am catching on. Thanks
Thanks, man!
Talk at you
High on fire 🔥 riff

Is it okay to go slave out into interface? Or is that a big nono?
P.s. I have a 100w 2channel rev g
+Gear Head Productions You're right, an instrument cable is adequate in that case since it's a line level output.
@@PlagueScytheStudios And always a load like a 4x12 Box. Without it and you blow your amp.
So is the "Slave out" something like a send fx without return? My amp doesnt have a "send - return". Just a slave Output...
More or less, except it is tapped off of the power amp so you get the full amp signal at line level
@@PlagueScytheStudios so the slave out is how I safely run the second half of a full stack? straight from slave out ( of a triple rec ) into second cab?
Jcm800s dont have efx loops so how could you use them as a slave?
Hetfield had practically every Marshall he ever used modded, and an FX Loop or isolated power amp input was probably one of them. He even had the Mesa Mark IV modded into a standalone pre amp on black album.
Thumbs up for the High on Fire riff.
Mesa or Diezel? Mezel(s)
Makes me miss my marshall hdfx
Plague Scythe Studios
Thanks for the reply!
What if I used a chorus pedal and send both outputs of the pedal to inputs of both heads to run at tje same time? Maybe dial the marshall to a low gain since they will be both running in unison and switch normal between my mesa?
+Music Theory You can certainly do that. That's basically the equivalent of an ABY box in this case.
Plague Scythe Studios one last question
So I'd use the mesa for my main tone and switchin. 80% is heavy distortion playing but theres a few small spots of semi clean playing. If the marshall is all time on what would you recommend for the setting on Marshall? Maybe a mild overdrive? I don't need pristine cleans
Thank you, very helpful. I probably would have done something stupid and blown up my equipment. lol
Jesus just gone climbed down off the cross and ripped into a face melting guitar solo!
I hate how soulless music has become even with something as organic as guitar with all of the impulse shit and processing. Call me old fashioned but I much prefer recording the real way with real amps, minimal extra tracking and such. This is why all the new metal bands sound like the same brand of vanilla ice cream
I concur!!
Metal bands all sound the same because metal in general all sounds the same. It has nothing to do with the recording process, and everything to do with the genre and the musicians.
You can still use impulses and make it sound completely different. Just use different impulses and less common amps.
Metal all sounds similar
Are you a JEZUS?
Once we started talking about load boxes, I got lost
Wrong. Metallica did NOT slave into Marshall’s. It’s an Internet myth. Read the Sweet silence notes again. They slaved into Boogie power amps on AJFA only.
What a beautiful man
Reamping is bad IMO. Ruins the feel. It's basicly just studio debauchery!!! Slaving IMO is very useful for being unique. But they're definitely two different things like you said rofl.
Modelers don’t sound as good as real speakers and mics.
Too much talking and waffle! You have amps behind you that you could have used to demonstrate the correct sequence of cables and inputs.
Amp slaving is not always the preferred solution...i have a
Mark V and it has a slave out...however when i use my setup I run my mark v through a G force effects and then out to two amps(in true stereo)..the loop return of my Mark V and the loop return of a TSL100...this could not be done with the slave out...the slave out would give you the effects (and a signal to send to the Marshal but this would be mono...the only way to keep stereo is to run the outs from the Geforce to the effects return on both amps,,,this gives stereo...the Slave will not work in stereo because you would have to feed the line back through the Mesa..causing that ground loop issue you warned of.
Yes. Watch the part where he mentioned this to make sure it's right but it should be guitar-randall input-mesas fx return-speaker.
