Greenland is unhappy and frustrated about their road from being a territory to an independent country is moving too slow. As it is now, there are more than 30 areas where Greenland instantly would be able to set themselves free and could rule on their own but unfortunately cannot afford to without Denmark paying for it, like something as simple as having their own police and prison system.
They are not unhappy about their new luxurious prison in Nuuk and expensive infrastructure, free health care, free day care, paid sick leave, the right to 6 weeks fully paid vacation a year + all holydays, 52 weeks of fully paid parental leave, free University college and the right to live and work anywhere in the EU all being a subsidy by the Danish Government. Rights and privileges that do not exist in the USA.
Despite of what Trump is saying, Greenland are actually 100% in control of their own resources and environmental issues, so they can mine and drill as little or as much as they want with no interference from Denmark, while Denmark is subsidizing Greenland with around $13,500 ( 98,300 Danish Crowns) per citizen a year (including courts, police and prison system an other areas run by Denmark), while the state that receives highest funding from the US federal government is Alaska at less than $9,000 per citizen which is very high compared to other states, and again, Greenland would only be considered a territory and not a state, should they join the USA.
Trump has wrongfully been blaming Denmark for environmental laws that prevent extensive mining and drilling in Greenland, but Denmark has no such control. Greenland is very protective when it comes to their unspoiled nature, because the Inuit are a highly nature loving people, so the strict environmental laws have all been implemented by Greenland and not Denmark.
Besides losing all of the above, their goal of being an independent country, and not just a territory most surely would be a total no-go if they were to join the USA. Greenland have two seats in the Danish Parliament, but the whole 31 seat Parliament in Greenland stand politically either to the left of, or in around the same place as a "Bernie Sanders", so you can be 100% sure that MAGA and the Republicans would never want them to be a State with seats in the Senate and House of Representatives.
We have on the other hand seen enough of US behavior against their own territories and citizens to know, that if Greenland were to sign up to join the USA, Trump and a tiny ultra rich US elite would make sure that their rich hand-puppet politicians would implement new legislation, that make it possible to mistreat and rob Greenland of all their resources.
Like giving away very cheap and favorable mining and drilling rights and handing out huge tax rebates, that will all hurt the Greenlandic economy, not to forget, to undo the Greenlandic environmental laws the highly nature loving Inuit's have in place to save their unspoiled nature. Fortunately it's never going to happen.

That would be the biggest mistake Greenlanders could make outside of total Independence. Right now Denmark has given them almost full autonomy to run their country as they see fit and they are protected by Denmark, a member of NATO, so they are essentially protected by NATO. Denmark only wants the best for Greenland, while Trump wants the vast supply of their untapped resources of minerals and oil and Greenland would lose the Autonomy that they have with Denmark.
I know that most Greenlanders think that they would like total independence, but that would leave them unprotected and either Russia, China, or unbelievably, the US would annex them in a heartbeat.

Honestly, I don't really care much about whether or not we purchase Greenland. Especially if Greenlanders themselves don't want to be part of the US, not even as a territory, then we shouldn't force them as I'm not the type that stands for us as a country and superpower to invade and conquer other nations/territories against their wills.
That said, I understand and appreciate the national security risks posed by Greenland falling in the hands/under the control of our adversaries and could game theory several scenarios that could realistically happen. And my fear is that that will happen without our knowledge (at least not soon enough) either voluntary by Greenland/Denmark, or forcefully. If Greenland is taken over forcibly, both Greenland and especially Denmark will 100% reach out to us the US and ask for our assistance to aid and protect them (and of course they'd expect us to get involved in that war free of charge). Greenland obviously doesn't have the military power to defend themselves against Russia, China or even N.K. Denmark falls in that same category as well and that's assuming they've even committed military aid/assistance to Greenland which the Greenlanders themselves admit they receive no such support from Denmark as it is. So one way or another, we'll *have* to occupy and protect/defend Greenland, whether they'll belong to us or not and whether there remains "peace" between BRICS and the US or not. And in that scenario, I'd say it'll be more beneficial to all 3 parties if Greenland becomes part of the US in whatever capacity they choose, than how things are like right now which is Greenland being a major liability for the US (and I'm strictly referring to them as a liability the same way Ukraine has been since their invasion)
