Gerd Leonhard is a well-known Futurist and Author of 5 books, a highly influential Keynote Speaker, Think-Tank Leader & Advisor, the Founder of GreenFuturists and the Creator / Host of The Future Show. Gerd also serves as Visiting Professor at the Fundação Dom Cabral (São Paulo, Brazil). He is well-known as the Co-author of the influential book ‘The Future of Music’ (Berklee Press, 2005), and as the author of ‘The End of Control’ (2007), ‘Music 2.0’ (2008), ‘Friction is Fiction’ (2009, Lulu Publishing), and ‘The Future of Content’ (Kindle-only, 2011).
Gerd is considered a leading expert on topics such as the future of humanity, big data and privacy, digitally native business models, the networked society, a sustainable business ecology, social media, social business and So-Lo-Mo communications, TV & Radio futures, mobile strategies, innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship, consumer trends, UGC and peer production, copyright and IPR issues, next-generation advertising, marketing and branding, and more recently the development of ‘green futures‘ scenarios. In 2006, The Wall Street Journal called Gerd ‘one of the leading Media Futurists in the World’.

That's interesting. I had quite a few discussions on this in my Management class at USYD. Fascination never ceases while talking about the future of this technological world.

Thanks a ton dear Gerd Leonhard, for very insightful talk and ideas. It inspires all of us to rethink and reframe on what is valuable and what sells, though there are majority of 'hubots' who turn into technology or gadgets, the real quest for meaning and self-realisation is not only immensely worthwhile but also joyful.
I highly recommend this talk where Gerd Leonhard provides an excellent high-level overview of exponential change using various excerpts from current exponential change thought leaders. Gerd asks relevant, timely, and thought provoking questions about the ethics and implications of exponential change.

Computers must be programed and since they are machines they are not able to make free choices. They are only as smart as their programmers and they "always" act according to their programming. There will never be a time that computers hold a primacy over human beings, what a fantasy. Even though a computer can calculate faster than a human being it cannot make decisions like a human being, it is mere programming and human beings are creatures of intellect and free will, created in the image of God.
Michael Doherty omg I was totally reading your post and thinking "heres a person who knows how to think"... until I got to metaphysical throw in at the end which threw me off. Disappointing.
Had this conversation with my old man recently... unfortunately, as a software engineer doing R&D on Artificial Intelligence I fundamentally disagree. I do not believe that my position comes from a place of hubris and over-estimation of human abilities because I honestly wish that we (human beings-specifically software people) were NOT capable of some of the things that we are (some of it is just too dangerous). That being said. You ARE correct. Machines MUST be programmed, and they follow their instructions. HOWEVER, what you are missing here is this: Software is written to perform a pre-defined tasks in a certain order. However, "Learn how to be the best mechanic in the world" and "Repair this vehicle" are valid pre-defined tasks that a deep learning based Artificial Intelligence (AI) CAN perform. The main "task" that AI programmers code into their software is "Learn". Also, it IS possible for software to write more software, as software code is nothing more than a text file. There are very few software programs in existence which cannot write text files. By extension, once an AI program "Learns" how to do these complex tasks, it is then possible for the program to generate a new version of itself which includes instructions for how to repair that vehicle in that situation. DISCLAIMER: very simplified for brevity.
